Freetalk: Interviews with David Devoss

This week in the 3-minute podcast, we talked to David Devoss, a veteran war journalist who has spent many years in Southeast Asia in the earlier part of his career, covering the Vietnam War and doing a Time magazine cover story on Tun Hussein Onn.

Freetalk 28: Will the government listen?

The 1988 Judiciary Crisis is a dark mark in the country's history. Many are now calling for a review. Will the government listen?

Freetalk28_Judiciary.jpg

Listen to the 3-minute podcast at www.klstream.com. Oon, who was at a related public forum recently, has a recap.

Meanwhile, in the Parliament, BN backbencher Zaid Ibrahim (BN-Kota Baru) strongly pleaded for a review of the 1988 judicial crisis, telling the government not to be afraid of correcting 'a wrong of the past.

“Tun Salleh Abbas is 77 years old now, the country and all of us have committed a sin towards him,” Zaid said during his debate on the Budget 2007 yesterday afternoon. Read the details in Malaysiakini.

Freetalk 27: Jail me if you dare

Is Dr. M a washout after his humiliating defeat in Kubang Pasu? Hardly. He's gonna keep hammering on.

Freetalk27_DrM.jpg

I was there at Dr. M's impromptu press conference on Monday. Listen to the 3-minute podcast at www.klstream.com for a recap.

Meanwhile, responding from Helsinki to Dr Mahathir claims that divisional delegates were bribed to vote against him last Saturday, Umno president and PM Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said: "(Kedah Umno liaison chief) Mahdzir Khalid and Kubang Pasu Umno head Mohd Johari Baharum should know better. I leave it to them." Via Bernama:

"I still remember telling them not to bring in outsiders to 'disturb' the Umno members or the Kubang Pasu division.

"This is Kubang Pasu affairs, let the Kubang Pasu Umno members make their decision," he added.

And so starts the echo chamber among Umno stalwarts.

While I was out on assignment last week, Oon did a solo interview with Jason Lo. It was on the podcast yesterday.

Freetalk 22: Ultraman strikes again... Balik Pulau?

First he went after MCA. Now, he's going after Gerakan. Will "Ultraman" ever ease up now that the Father-in-Law said he is angry with Umno's anti-Koh Tsu Koon banner politics over the 'marginalised' Balik Pulau?

Freetalk 16: Ultraman, uncut version

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it Ultraman? No, it's just Khairy Jamaluddin trying to be a young Anwar... or is it a young Dr. M he's trying to emulate? Or maybe a little bit of both.

Freetalk downloads

Oon Yeoh SMS-ed to tell me that yesterday's Freetalk segment, about Steven Gan's take on PM Abdullah's political fate, has hit a record 16,113 downloads in one day.

The 3-minute podcast broke the 5-figure downloads benchmark right from Week 2 of its existence, with the highest download before this, ironically, being the segment about the 31 questions for the famous Son-in-Law.

Freetalk 14: Anwar should and could lead Opposition

Does Anwar still harbor dreams of being PM? And should he? Find out what Steven Gan thinks in www.klstream.com, the 3-minute podcast.

Steven thinks Anwar can make a good Opposition Leader instead of becoming a Prime Minister.

Freetalk 13: "Too late for Pak Lah now," Steven says

Is there anything Pak Lah can do to effectively counter Dr. M? Or is it a lost cause?

Freetalk 12: Steven on Dr M's end-game

Steven Gan says he's no fan of Mahathir, but the former prime minister does play a positive role in forging more transparency in Malaysia in the Mahathir Abdullah tussle.

Oon Yeoh and I can't agree with each other on Anwar Ibrahim's political prospects. So we chatted in two parts. Yesterday's was Oon's take, and today's mine. We might be right as much as we might be both wrong. Time will decide, soon.

Freetalk 7: Internet Election?

What impact will the Internet and New Media have on shaping public opinion? Does it have the reach to make a difference? Maybe not today but how about tomorrow, and during General Election 2009?

No BN Members of Parliament, except Shahrir Samad perhaps, have bothered to blog. Will they be fried?

Freetalk 4: Freedom of the Press

UPDATED VERSION. In today's Freetalk, I mentioned about the blatant editorialising of journalists' news stories in The NST. Incidentally, Rocky's Bru pointed who the butchered and the butcher in the newsroom are, respectively.

Look for the entry titled: BRENDA AND BRENDAN.

The source of the expose was Dr Mahathir himself, who mentioned Brenda's name twice.

Original posting:

Has the media become freer under the Pak Lah administration? Or is it pretty much the same old same old?

Freetalk_free-press.jpg

Well, within the 3-minute soundbyte boundary, we could only discuss the state of affairs in the three major English papers. The long and short of it is, if you still read the mainstream media, you get the papers you deserved.

To listen to Freetalk, you need an MP3 player on your PC/notebook to listen to the podcast. Just 3 minutes everyday, Monday through Friday. Only at www.klstream.com.

Videocast: 2 TV commercials

Many of you haven't got into the pattern visiting Whatzzup , my videocast channel, without prompting :-)

There are two video clips which are TVCs basically, one on car and the other on improving your English -- two things we don't do too good at, neither are some other countries.

3G 'Holy Shit'

I had a Skypecast (interview over Skype) with The Edge columnist/ blogger Oon Yeoh to get his perspective on the 3G beauty parade and the fact that DiGi has been edged out in the auction.

Download this audio excerpt to hear his utter shock (MP3 file, 893kb, 0'28").

The full version of the Skypecast (06'41") has been uploaded on Jeff on the Mike. You need good broadband in order to fully enjoy this audio channel from Screenshots.

Splitting hair and going bald

It's my first podcast for 2006, released on Feb 3 but delayed by three days due to a technical hiccup.

When common people caught for trivial offences are treated like hardcore criminals, who gets heard and who gets hurt? The Court of Public Opinion decides.

Language: English
Release Date: February 3, 2006
File Size: 1.09Mb (MP3)
Duration: 03′06″

Download here.

Bangkok Post quoted Sunday Star as saying the Malaysian government will investigate whether police violated the rights of 10 detainees whose heads were shaved bald after they were arrested for gambling. Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said that if the officers' action was against procedures, disciplinary action should be taken against them.

Jeff on the Mike

I was Jerry Foo's guest for a CNY Special recently. The podcast is available for download here (English, m4b format, 16′56″). Jerry is a former journalist with Star In-Tech. He inspires me a lot into the finer points of podcasting.

My podcast, named Jeff on the Mike, will have a slow start as a weekend feature, which will also be RSS-enabled soon. Working with collaborators, I will attempt to incorporate WAP access/delivery, and SMS/MMS feedback from the listeners in the near future. Let me climb the learning curve for now.

Gillmor Gang: Memeorandum and the future of media

Six months ago, the other (Dan) Gillmor sibling -- that's Steve (AttentionTrust.org/ ZdNet), also a seasoned tech journalist -- lined up Dana Gardner (ZdNet), Dan Faber (ZdNet), Doc Searls (weblog.com), Mike Vizard (CMP) and Jon Udell (InfoWorld) to form a podcast gang, simply called Gillmor Gang.

On Feb 3, the Gillmor Gang talked about the Randum Gang. That's Memeorandum, and it's cool, really cool.
