Screamyx... nation-wide & 4 days ahead

June 5, Streamyx announced on the website that

...Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) will be performing a network upgrading exercise from 11.00 pm, Friday, 12th June 2009 until 6.00 am, Saturday, 13th June 2009."

As a result, Streamyx customers nationwide may experience a disruption of service during the stipulated period. We would like to assure you that the service would resume to normal after this period.

It seems TM is super efficient and brought the June 12 downtime forward to today... four days ahead of schedule.

So much so, those wireless guys who depended on TM for sporadic backhaul support seemed to have suffered just the same. Frequent droplines and reconnects are a pain.

The connectivity stays, but upload and download packets are dead

Twitter folks now have a new tag: #streamyxsucks.

Slow is one thing, but of late, the whole TM network will get intermittent network problems once a week. It happened twice in two weeks already, on leased line and on Streamyx, etc. It seems like their DNS has got some issues. One minute you can get Google, another minute Google is down. Getting a bit frustrated when business depends on Internet.

This is nothing new from TM Net (Tak Maju Net?). Usually they took 3 to 7 days to troubleshoot issue raised even my offices are using Corporate package. If they are not controlling most of the physical link then more ISP will be able to provide better and cheaper package. Another Malaysia Boleh?

Thanks very much for the info. I didn't know that Screamyx had been reduced to whimpers. I don't depend directly on Screamyx for Internet Access. Even then I've only got Download Speed of TENS OF kbps or LESS, since Fri 5 Jun 2009 till today.

Of course not all SCREAMYx critics automatically jump up and blame them for any and all Internet out(r)ages ;D So like [new ONE :( ] GOOD MALAYSIAN BARU, I checked out internet monitoring sites like ITR, Elijah Labs, Keynote Systems, Analog X and EVEN US-CERT. Except Malaysia, Internet was good everywhere else. Still it pulled down ITR's Asia Index to below 80/100. That's worse than Africa. VISION 2020 in Bolehland? Even the Bushmen of S Africa will be ahead of us. God help us all.

PS: Sreamyx outages have spillover effects, even on those not directly connected to it. It even DRAGS DOWN the regions' Internet Index. Now we know why The Internet is called "The Web." Everything connected to everything else.

Why my RANT 8-0)*%#@^?&* here?
I've lost 2-3 days sleep trying to fix it!!! YB Jeff: What is Malaysia CERF doing? 'Makan gaji buta?' No alerts, no sound, no help and no use!!

Here's to a few Internet-less days, no thanks Screamyx and the ONE Minister (ir)responsible, and the ONE (third world)Impotent Government.

Thanks again Jeff Ooi.

Thanks for sharing this news Jeff. I'm not sure whether I'm happy or cynical to hear about this, probably a combination of both. Speeds and connections on Streamyx have been highly inconsistent these last 3-4 weeks (I think only 10% of my connections went through yesterday, or were timing out), and if this upgrading helps, I'm all for it.

However, I'm still more cynical rather than optim. I'd like to be wrong.

To offload traffic to their call centres, perhaps they should send guides to subscribers in advance of any disrupting upgrades to:

1. tell people when there will be disruptions;

2. tell people how to self-diagnose problems, say, by pinging, reversing the cable, direct link from computer to socket, and so on.

3. tell people how to sms them after 2. has been done so that they can check the port on their side before issuing the works order reference.

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
