4.5% EPF dividend... lowest since 2003
The unionists were spot on. EPF dividend is down.
The EPF announced after trading day today a 4.5% dividend for 2008 -- 1.3% lower than the previous year, and the lowest returns of dividend since 2003.
It cited higher provisions required to mitigate its investment returns in the worldwide economic crisis as the key reason for the lower dividend.
To be exact, the EPF recorded the highest ever earnings of RM20 billion in gross income for 2008, an increase of 9.36% over the previous year's gross income of RM18.29 billion.
It gave a 5.8% dividend for 2007. The announcement was tactically made on January 23, 2008 to kick-up voters' morale prior to the March 8 general election.
In comparison, the EPF dividend primed at 8.5% dividend in 1987, and then slipped to the lowest ebb of 4.25% in 2002. Subsequently, it climbed to 4.5% in 2003, 4.75% for 2004, 5% for 2005, and 5.15% for 2006.

Maybe we should let the fund managers for ASB and ASN handle the KWSP investments. They seem to consistently outperform the KWSP; this time at an expected distribution of 7-8% for 2008.
