Perak... Cock-up Royale!

UPDATED VERSION. The Pakatan Rakyat coalition lost control of the Perak state government in a political coup d'etat but it's the BN and the royal family that received the cock-up royale.

Merdeka Centre for Opinion Polls made an opinion survey in Perak on February 8, three days after BN announced its new menteri besar consented by the Sultan. Here are the highlights of the poll results:

  • 74% of the respondents feel that the state assembly should have been dissolved after the defection of the three Pakatan Rakyat lawmakers
  • 76% of the respondents felt that the "people, through elections, should decide on who forms the government"
  • 62% of the respondents felt that the "role of the palace in this decision" means it does not recognise the will of the people
  • 66% of the respondents do not accept state governments formed through the defection of state assemblymen
  • 59% of the respondents feel that the political crisis in Perak would decrease support for Barisan Nasional.

What does it tell? Do Perak voters also feel like blogger-lawyer Malik Imtiaz that the Ruler may have erred?

What would the poll outcome be if had the Sultan agreed to the dissolution of the House, or held off appointing BN's Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir as the new MB until a vote of no confidence against PR's Mohd Nizar was taken in the assembly?

Think!

Hi Jef, me again,good day.

The result of a random survey will depend on many variables that include who did you called, the classifications, categories, work status, and many more. Another issue is whether the person in the survey was lying when answering your questions. And there are a lot more factors. I always asked the guys who did the survey about how sure that he got good and reliable data and always asked him whether he would trade in his life if they aren’t true. He he he. And many would say, No.

Hi Jeff,

There was a lot of common sense floating around when the 3 Independents defected 'immorally' to BN and sold their allegiance to them that gave BN the upperhand to swing the Sultan's favour to them. Even without a poll we can generally agree that people find the takeover distasteful, very unMalaysian if I may say so. No, I am not suggesting that BN politely takeover Perak, but I am suggesting that they follow the democratic route of OFFERING themselves to takeover through a re-election process if the state assembly was dissolved.

Unfortunately why that never happened was I think their lack of faith in themselves, that they could not take over the state because they would not receive the people's support. In the 10 months of new rule under PR, the Perakians discovered a new style, a fresh honesty and cleanliness in seeing their state better run. No, not well run, but better run than when under BN. Sure we all expect PR to perform like angels but that is unfairness because we never point such fingers when BN ran the state, so why not give PR a fair chance, at least until 2012 to prove themselves?

No, the Merdeka Poll simply confirm what we already know. What surprised and dissappointed me is that the numbers were not more decisive.
