Gerakan and Umno... the Opposition in new Penang... ( 2 )

BN the Opposition party in Penang, particularly the Gerakan, has been pressing for a disclosure of the total expenses spent in the trade delegation led by Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to South Korea recently (October 28 - November 1). Read details here.

They now got their wish come true. Today, my colleague Dato' Lee Kah Choon, who is the chairman of the Executive Committee of InvestPenang which organised and coordinated the trade mission to Korea, revealed the Guan Eng Delegation's expenses -- PLUS a comparison of how much the BN/Gerakan trade mission Koh Tsu Koon led to India in 2007 had incurred in similar expenses accounts.

Let's put some perspectives to the numbers.

  1. DELEGATION SIZE: The delegation size was almost similar -- each on the young side of the 50's (government plus private sectors)
  2. NUMBER OF DAYS IN ITINERARY: Guan Eng's delegation spent LESS to stay more days, while Tsu Koon's delegation spent MORE to stay less days -- and you know I know, cost of living in Seoul is much higher than in Chennai/Bangalore.
  3. ROUND-TRIP DISTANCE: The air-travels are almost equidistant -- Koh Tsu Koon's was Penang-to-Chennai/Bangalore; while Guan Eng's was to Seoul
  4. AIR FARE: Fuel price increases in 2008 had escalated the price of total airfare inclusive of fuel surcharge, compared to 2007 when Koh Tsu Koon led his delegation to India -- yet the Guan Eng Delegation's total airfare cost about 46% lower. We didn't travel on First or Business Class!
  5. ACCOMMODATION: Inflation is much higher in 2008 compared to 2007, and yet the Guan Eng Delegation's hotel bills were about 78% lower than Tsu Koon's -- we save taxpayers' money by staying in budget-class hotel with no shampoo and shower gel supplied!

In the final analysis, what Koh Tsu Koon's delegation spent in just one trip could have funded the Guan Eng Delegation's trade mission to Korea THREE times over.

And I let you Google the net to see if Tsu Koon's 2007 trip to Chennai/Bangalore had brought back any investments from India to date. Just go figure!

Well, those BN leaders have got the answer they asked for. But I don't think they are going to like it!

It will actually prove PR government is not wasteful; their favourite line of "semua orang kalau dapat kuasa pun makan rasuah" is being chipped away bit by bit.

I hope the people are paying attention to the stark difference between the two state governments' approach to spending taxpayers' money.

I'd have to say well done here.

EXCELLENT COMPARISON !!!

FACTUAL !!! PRECISE !!! And irrebuttable because the facts are irrefutable...

Btw, it's good to be back after a long hibernation...

i hope koh tsu koon better have a good explanation on the money spent during his rule.

if the money used was public funded, then all details should be published and scrutinized.

Well done. The BN opposition is doing their job very well by asking questions. The LGE's team is also governing and running Penang very well. That should be the way. Keep it up and let us make this a permanent feature of the New Penang for years, if not for decades to come.

Gerakan at this stage should just keep quiet and observe. They might learn a thing or two on how to run a State properly.

Great job done on the expense report !

Now let's wait for the BN Backbencher club office boy, 陳嘉亮 and Oh TK to crack their head in defense of eunuch Koh

Bravo !

Hi Jeff,

Please continue the good work and don't be too bothered by those SOUR GRAPES in BN.

They have plundered all our $$ and now they are longing for the good old times which we Penangites will NEVER even let them have even a sniff of it anymore, ever!

SOCK it to them, Ooi, with facts and numbers. Put the foot in their big mouth.

Ha ha ha...dumb and dumber all over again!

Bravo Jeff.

I believe everyone been waiting for DAP to answer and justify this trip.

So now it seems that they spit in the air... Now they got what they want and I HOPE THEY PRINT THIS ON PRESS!

Keep up the good work. The struggle never be easy.

Having good money sense, Penangites can see for themselves.

Thinking they were the rajs, one group stayed taj-mahal style.

Thinking they were the rakyat, the other group stayed cubicle style.

Which group cared for your money more?

Which group achieved less if any?

Answers all displayed up there.

This should be the benchmark for all political forays overseas.

Most applicable to BN; their voters should press them to do so.

Meow! Jeff and gang, I'm pleased with you CATS. Now, do your best!

and is this shape of things to come? another storm seems to be brewing...

Jeff oh Jeff, have you so conveniently forgotten? You went to Korea twicelah!!!

One Mission. Two Trips.

Wow, that is the super inefficiency and super uneffectiveness. Congratulation!!!

Aiyah, you also need to add the cost of 1st trip too!!! Then, only the comparison is fairer.

Are you planning a third Korean trip in the coming months?

Korean budget hotels are of high standard in term of hygience, safety and security. India's budget hotels have yet to catch up. You should try your lucky star in Chennai and Bangalore - pray hard. You may fool readers some of the times, but not all the times.

No doubt, fuel cost had increased in 2008, but airfares also became extremely competitive. You are conveniently absent-minded.

Furthermore, your publicity seeking leader choose to take economic class seat, the rest "teh tiau" and "boh pien".

Subsequently, this delegation to Korea need to have an additional two days to recover from jet lag, etc. A trip that need only 3 days was spread over a duration of 5 days. If you calculate the opportunity cost for the additional 2 days x 52 high profile delegates, the cost is enormous. Easily more than 50K, unless you want to argue that your delegation consist of cheap labourers.

If the future, I like to suggest you appeal to Gerakan to supply your delegation with shampoo, hair gel, towels, toilet rolls, tissue paper, mineral waters, etc to save cost.

Anyway, CHEERIO and have a enjoyable future holiday cum biz trip.

According to 99% of my Penang online friends that voted in last GE 2008, if LGE and his team continue to rule Penang like now, Penang will NEVER fall back into Gerakan's hands.

Keep up the good job!

I am not a rocket scientist nor a mathematician but the above statistic is a shocking revelation. Kudos to DAP!

Wah Jeff ! Publish the amount, you kena. Don't publish, oso kena! Wah BN style politics for the uninitiated ! :D

Who would have thought that the expenditure of such a trip would have been given such a double-edged meaning?

Now saving taxpayers' money by travelling economy is considered publicity seeking! Ho ho ho Merry Christmas ! BN has lost their Santa!

Comaprison wide, how did the BN fellas travel? 1st class? Business class? Any which one still much more expensive than economy ma? Why split hairs between airfare in 2007 and 2008? Gerakan or BN publish the how much was spent then, we can make valid comparison lah. No need to shoot in the dark and agak-agak. Too much room to maneuver. We need to make it simple and short.

I would have thought any trip would have automatically included cost saving measures so as to minimise wastage but evidently this is looked down by some who now charge the state government of when their only crime is shaming the previous state government in philosophy and practice where public funds is concerned.

Gerakan to supply you with the necessities? How much would they be screwing their party members for those cheap points? PR don't need that lah. You think it will show up in party accounts at cost ah? Sure mark up mah, lest lame duck KTK will be accused of publicity
seeking by some ! ;)

The nonsense about jetlag and opportunity cost was something pulled out of thin air. What was actually the programme for the 5 days? Did the government have to pay more for non-government function of the delegates?

And how would anyone quantify opportunity cost when the decision to remain (especially many of the 52 delegates came on their own and made own arrangements) be factored into state government accounts? This is sheer stupidity. It is better to question UMNO leaders of their time off official duties that they spend campaigning. But of course, this is off someone's radar. :D

kalama,

What are you trying to say? Korea budget hotel is cleaner then India 5 star hotel? Or Korea no 5 star hotel to stay? Do you have any proof that during the India trip, they actually did survey on accomodation cleaniness before deciding? I am impressed!

Two trips, 3 trips, monthly trips, if something is being achieved, it is still 100 times stronger then 1 day fruitless trip in India or lawat sambil belajar trip in Taiwan.

Secondly, are you trying to say that due to competitiveness, first class air fare has been slashed so much. Or simply the price difference is due to LGE team only taking economy class?

Last but not least, are you suggesting that it is more productive to let these high profile delegates to sit at home waiting durian to drop?

Please dont move away from the topic like what BN always good at, it is not about tissue papers or shampoo, hair gel, etc. It is the initiative to cut cost by staying in budget hotel and taking economy class.

Heck, the budget backpacker room during my honeymoon trip in Australia is more expensive then LGE's business trip, without broad band service! I am honored! LOL

Just passing by, my 1/2cents.
