Social Contract... from 1957 to 2008?
I was having a friendly debate with YB Ibrahim Ali (Independent-Pasir Mas) on the issue of how Malaysia should move forward in the midst of protracted polemic that had stretched over 50 years about "Social Contract and National Unity".
Interestingly, we both only knew of facing off each other at the very last minute before we reached the city studio of Astro Awani (Channel 501).

If you check the wikipedia on Malaysia's so-called Social Contract, five of my blog entries written in 2005 had been used as referenced materials on the subject. I had specifically cursed the Malay newspapers for stoking the racist fire, and preventing us from looking at the issue rationally to forge national unity among the younger generations of Malaysian brethren.
'Rising racism among the Malays'
Incidentally, Dr Mahathir also talked about Social Contract in his blog yesterday. Apart from blaming Abdullah for the rising racism among the Malays, not least evident in the form of previously unknown Ahmad Ismail, I wonder Dr M has any ideas to checkmate this Malay racism at its back burner?
Social Contract in Malaysia is more than what Jean-Jacques Rousseau had theorised in the 1700's. It has now become a political cocoon that had entrapped our leaders, precipitated racial divide, and prevented us from moving forward to take on the greater world outside.
Hence another quotable quote from Rousseau: "Man is born free, but everywhere he is in chains."

Jeff,
I was watching the friendly debate on the Astro Awani channel between you and Ibrahim Channel and was disgusted by his ultra-malay image. He kept on defending the Malays sovereignity and rights and did not even care about the other races in the country. This chap is dangerous and another Ahmad Ismail in the making. The country would not be calm if this type of leader is around as his selfish aim is to fight for his own race only.

Hello, sir..when I read your post on social contracts..it reminded me of Martin Luther King ("I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.'"
and Abrahim Lincoln (Gettysburg Address).
It saddens me to think sometimes that no matter how much I love my country, it might not love me back..
