« Maybank-BII Controversy... Part II | Main | Arif Shah... From 22nd to top in a day »

August 26 oh August 26

August 26, voters in Permatang Pauh will decide -- in the face of BN mobilising huge resources and machinery including by-election money -- if Anwar Ibrahim is fit to be returned to the Parliament, and set the Government-in-Waiting in real motion.

On the same day, August 26 and four hundred kilometres away, Dr Mahathir will be the Guest-of-Honour Speaker to address The Futurist Forum 2008 at Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. The main speaker is, yes you guessed it, John Naisbitt.

Both of them will dialogue after the two keynote presentations.

Today, Mahathir wrote in his blog that It is time for the silent majority to speak up and be counted. Quote from his 30-verse ode, titled 'Whither Malaysia':

15. Sacrifice? What sacrifice?

16. Who cares to sacrifice whatever. For most of the people we put our trust in to steer this beloved country to greater heights, the only sacrifice is to give up the Mercedes Benz for Proton Perdana, and that too very reluctantly.

17. I wasn't the best of leaders when I was in the hot seat.

18. But I did try my best. If my best is not good enough I am sorry.

19. But Dato Onn Jaafar, Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tun Abdul Razak, Tun Hussein Onn, Tun Tan Siew Sin, Tun V.T. Sambanthan cannot be faulted in terms of the sacrifices they made, their contributions to building racial harmony, peace and stability for their country.

20. Could it be that we forgot to teach this generation of leaders about the sacrifices made by our founding fathers.

21. Could it be that we cannot handle wealth as we did poverty?

22. Could it be that our leaders lack honour and the sense to accept responsibility and to retire gracefully?

23. Some simply cannot accept the realities, the role they had played in the destruction of a near perfect system which had done so much for our country.

24. Yes we should "Cry the Beloved Country" as Alan Payton said of his South Africa of the Apartheid past.

25. But crying would take us nowhere.

26. It is time the silent majority stop being silent.

27. It is time to speak up and be counted.

After Aug 26, Chun Wai blogs that Anwar will be in time for Abdullah's budget speech, a job the former used to do before Mahathir delisted him in 1998.

August 26 oh August 26. Any futurist out there we could trust his forecast?

Naz: 'You're so quiet these days, Neil.'

Neil: 'I've said all that i wanted to say.'

Naz: 'So how have you been filling your time?'

Neil: 'Cyber-excavating. i am an e-archaeologist. Like Dr Jones, i go mining alone. A clue here, a flash there, and voila! Like this: http://tinyurl.com/6amt2y '

Naz: 'You have a scent for important things. What's your scent today on our situation?'

Neil: 'In a few more weeks we'll be raising our national flag again. Should just replace it with a white one. Everyone, surrender.'

Naz:'Those young, those young at heart, and those naive, won't, Neil.'

Neil: 'Like the kid who disrupted the Bar Council forum? Like the baby-faced minister who sanctioned it while looking at the camera with eyes looking for some reassurance that he isn't caught out to be pretending with his mouth? Like the police chief who spoke about advising people to call off something which is just a candid discussion on a persistent problem that the courts don't seem to want to do anything about, let alone absconding from his sacred oath to protect the legally constituted? Come, try me again.'

Naz: 'Ah! i see the old Neil flashing again.'

Neil: 'So what, Naz? We have crossed the rubicon. The bridge is burnt, no, let me rephrase that. The flyover is peeling off.'

Naz: 'You're so pessimistic, Neil. There's always a silver lining behind every cloud.'

Neil: 'That hides the thunderbolt which will roast one and all. That kid told his seniors to go to hell. Did he pass his exams to have the credentials to do so? The only credential he was so proud to say was that he was Umno. Yes, true there.'

Naz: 'Why are we in this state?'

Neil: 'Because sane-minded rakyat let OTC people rule over us.'

Naz: 'But OTC is over-the-counter, and those prescriptions often work well enough for the ordinary folks, Neil.'

Neil: 'Not when the sickness is otak-tak-center.'

Naz: 'I see. Religious exuberance displayed to bully others by people whose immaturity has engulfed their own culture and upbringing.'

Neil: 'Let alone the true teachings of their religion, Naz.'

Naz: 'So, again, why are we in this situation, Neil?'

Neil: 'Again i say, because half the population is being pulled along like cows with chains on their noses. Notice, Naz, that the real troublemakers are just a small group. So far, we have seen them to be some Umno council members and MPs, Umno Youth volksturm factions, PAS ultras, you know, the usuals.'

Naz:'Chedet had a hold on them when he was ruling.'

Neil: 'No, Chedet caused them to be brazen. His sorry today cannot defang the bat he groomed that is sucking all the blood out from the vein of this nation. We're going comatose so call the ambulance immediately, Naz.'

Naz: 'No spare parts, and out of fuel, Neil.'

Neil: 'Also out of steam. Chedet blew them up like balloons. They felt important. But it was just hot air. Now all the air is out and they just can't take the deflated situation. Soon they will look for the same bogeymen and punching bags again to deflect attention from their inadequacies, lies and greed. But do you know what's really tragic, Naz? The tragedy is that if the right things had been done all along from day one, they would not be in this situation today. This nation would not be split right down the centre in two ways. One by race between malays and non-malays, and the other by religion between islam and the other religions. That is the truth and all the sandiwara will not make it go away.'

Naz: 'In their wisdom the present leadership finds no amicable solution, so they just tell the rakyat to ignore it.'

Neil: 'Yes, but which group of rakyat? Those who don't populate the enforcement? Those whose voices are more moderate? Those who want to see meritocracy and justice save this country? Do you know what we are right now? We are like that deer in The Deer Hunter?'

Naz: 'Oh, that's an old one, Neil.'

Neil: 'The deer was in the sniper sight. Caught at the cliff, it turned left and right to run but it finally realized there was no escape. What did it do then, this innocent and gentle animal? It stood still, looked calmly at the barrel and just waited. The GE12 results offered some consolation that the deers of Malaysia weren't just those from the other half of the population. That the deers of Malaysia also comprised an increasing number of those from the OTHER half of the population, a half which finally found within themselves the courage and the honour to do the right thing, to wake up that their real enemies weren't those of the other races and faiths but those within their own ranks. Clear enough?'

Naz: 'Will they realize this enough at Permatang Pauh?'

Neil: 'I did say not long ago that Umno may be expected to be ruthless. Was i wrong one bit?'

Naz: 'The administration said they were following the rule of law but it seems odd to me that they were following it so efficiently on one case but not at all on the other. Leads are nullified which should under due process let alone rule of law be pursued transparently. How come?'

Neil: '(surprised look)You're asking me?'

Naz: 'Just thinking aloud, Neil.'

Neil:'But you're out of date, Naz. Thinking is not allowed in this country. Why else rattle the sabres to monitor and prosecute bloggers, the only thinking people around?'

Naz: 'Neil, i said aloud, not allowed.'

Neil: 'Does it matter when our ministers cannot think in more than one dimension? Listen to this baby-faced minister. Listen to Hamid, Rais, Najib, Badawi, Khairy, the Bungler, even Yakcub. Can you imagine what the rakyat are feeling right now after being chastised by the PM in waiting to change their lifestyle only to find the second minister saying that windfall tax will not be imposed on toll operators without saying WHY. Meanwhile they're still puzzling over the scorpene deal where millions had been paid to a local company to do 'coordination'. Exactly how big is this coordination thing? Is it like coordinating to open an olympics or something?' "Everything above board and according to procedure" is now the SOP statement. Note it's just a statement, and it's SOP and not SOB. You know, Naz, digital was long implemented so why in the first place buy analog that now is to be changed to digital? And also WYSIWYG has been around since M'soft Seattle tried to elbow out M'soft Brickfields so why DOS now to be changed to Windows? Fishy from day one? You got fish? I'm sick of pedigree pals.'

Naz: '(incredulous look). Neil, that's dog food.'

Neil: 'So what? As a citizen of this nation which has already gone to the dogs, what's the problem with this changed-lifestyle diet?'

Naz: '(scratches head, looks rueful, then grins). Look, Neil, if i give you the three greats of men, namely hard cash, fast cars and hot women, will you change your point of view?'

Neil: 'In this developed state where even holes are mixed up and you have one SD to nullify another SD? Come on, try me again. You may however have better luck with Umno. They can kautim anything for you.'

Naz: 'That's why Pakatan is stronger because it has PAS which takes no shit.'

Neil: 'Yeah, so how come PAS never made one pipsqueek over the shameful intervention by Umno at the Bar Council meet? See the terrible situation we are in? An impasse that will split this nation down the middle. In the end, everyone for himself. And nobody wins. We will become a lose-lose nation. Finito. And that's not the name of an italian icecream.'

Naz: 'You should be writing more at malaysiakini, Neil.'

Neil:'After reading some of their articles and letters, i have no confidence in myself. They're good, and i already feel small.'

Naz: 'So what next?'

Neil: 'The late Deros opened the eyes of the malays. This umno kid opened the eyes of the non-malays. Conclusion, change the government. If Pakatan blows it after that, change back to some new power-sharing configuration. The question mark is PAS, and those bimbos in Sabah and Sarawak. Will PAS come to its final senses that it is juvenile and inconsistent with the spirit of the new alliance to enforce an islamic state in this secular society, especially when you can see that once you give them an inch, they will roll over you by the mile. You know, standards are doubled, justice is monopolized, and assets are racialized. That's the only consistently carried out thing so far since Razak Sr so don't blame the rakyat if they don't believe that all this will change. First half the population doesn't trust the other half. Then the compliment is returned and what do you get? MAD. Mutually Assured Destruction. Guaranteed by a present govt which neither side trusts too! Where's that wristband of mine?'

Naz:'Listening to you makes me giddy, Neil.'

Neil: 'Me, too, Naz. I miss her.'

Naz: 'Shutup and go home, Neil.'

Neil: 'Ah for the good ol' jo days of "moritori hail salutans"'.

Naz: 'This blog seems to be winding down, Neil.'

Neil: 'It still has some relevance. But i don't know who actually reads anything anymore. Do you?'

to see that SPR or UMNO or PKR are not up to any dirty tricks before and during 26 august, MAFREL (election watchdog) penang will be at work again.
