Penang & Terengganu... A tale of two states

The new Penang state government defied convention by slashing the total number of honorific award recipients from 1,272 in 2007 to 497 this year. Terengganu does it a step further.

No award will be conferred in conjunction with the Sultan of Terengganu’s birthday this year. No reason was given.

Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, who is the reigning Yang DiPertuan Agong, celebrates his 46th birthday today.

It is believed that this 'No Award' birthday is a first for any state in the country.

New Mercs

BY THE WAY, state exco members and senior officers in Terengganu started using their new Mercedes-Benz E200 Kompressor cars today.

The oil-rich state bought 14 of the luxury cars for RM3.43 million to replace the Proton Perdana V6 Executive cars that had been purchased in 2004.

In comparison, during the first weeks of new governance, the present Penang state government has decided to cancel the orders of new official cars for exco members placed by the previous administration.

*yawn*

honestly, we need to abolish all these stupid datuk awards, and start a new ones...

Datuk Bendahara, Laksamana and Temenggung perhaps...

Jeff,

I think the calculation is incorrect.

RM3.43 mil / 14 = RM245k.

How can you get an E200 for RM245k?
Cheapest is at least RM350k.

So, the actual expenses is RM4.9mil!

JEFF OOI says: Government cars come under special sale and exempted from excise duty.

Brovo to the Sultan.
Middle finger up to Terengganu UMNO.
They will never learn.
Just watch...in 5 years times...those who squandered millions....will be poor again.
Easy come..easy go.

I thought the selangor sultan was the first with no awards on his birthday when he was pissed with the then menteri besar during the 90s. Maybe I was wrong.

Couldn't agree more with tomatoinc.

Datukship now is worthless because it's belong to the same league as the space tourist. No value. People should aim for Tan Sri title.

YB, I think Selangor or Johor Sultan also freezed giving out awards once or did he just said wanted to freeze? Anyway, good to see so many people receiving awards but the first malaysia to conquer Everest still not good enough?

Well Jeff.. eat your heart out. ;-)

Cheers

I think we just need to do away with awards that carry titles.

Seriously, I'll respect a leader more if he simply calls himself 'Mr' istead of being title crazy. After all, respect is earned and judged on merit. No amount of titles before your name will change that.

New luxury expensive cars while the People suffer?

Reminds me historically, what the situation was in France before the French Revolution!

With that price tag, you can buy 2.5 Perdanas or 2 HondaAccord/Camry which works more than enough for our representatives.

Nice lifestyle, can the rakyat also change to that? A beemer525iA would be more in keeping with our modern progressive state.

Just exactly how does riding in a guzzling limousine at twice the price of a lower-maintenance japanese model substitute assist in reducing the poverty level of the rakyat in that state, oil producer but poor?

If any one of those 14 bodek MPs including the MB can answer this simple question, then go ahead take off your shoes and get tingled by the plush carpet.

They haven't even got the oil fund from federal and they're already spending state funds better used for the poor.

Why, is this what ketuanan is meant all along? The political and civil services of this country isn't exactly inspiring or efficient. The state economies are exactly humming sweetly along. The rakyat aren't exactly having a bed of roses for lives they rather bypass.

So, what gives with this excess?

Terengganu MB defends RM3.4m new cars for Exco
KUALA TERENGGANU, July 21 — No oil royalty was used to purchase 14 Mercedes E200 Kompressors at RM3.43 million as official cars for Terengganu executive councillors and senior state government officials, according to Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said.
In defending the state government's decision to purchase the expensive cars to replace the Proton Perdana V6 Executive cars for the same official use, he said it was meant to save cost in the long run as the maintenance of the Proton Perdana cars was too high.

"We are not saying that the national car is not good, but the reality is that in less than two years of use, the cars had to be repaired due to faulty components like the gear box.

"For example, the car used by the Trade, Industry and Environment Committee chairman Toh Chin Yaw had been repaired twice costing RM50,000. But the Merdeces cars, although expensive to purchase, will incur us less maintenance cost in the long term," he explained.

Ahmad was asked by reporters about the reported purchase of the Mercedes cars after attending a “tahlil” held in conjunction with the birthday of the Terengganu Sultan, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, at Istana Maziah yesterday.

The function was also attended by Terengganu Regency Advisory Council member Tengku Sri Laksamana Raja Tengku Sulaiman Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah, state executive councillors and state assemblymen.

Ahmad said the purchase of the Mercedes E200 cars was financed by a sum allocated earlier by the state government and not by oil royalty.

"How could we use the oil royalty when we have not even received it from the federal government?" he said. — Bernama

Jeff,

14 x RM 358k each = RM5 million!

Not RM3.43mil as mentioned.
RM3.43 mil can only get you a C200, not E200
