Desperate Housewives... ( 5 )

UPDATED VERSION. There is a Letter to Editor in theSun (May 5, 2008 Page 21):

Housewives_Sun080505.jpg

The news item in context is pointed to theSun, May 2.

However, the core issue, to me, is about the repatriation of money held in trust by a group of people who had ceased to be valid members of Bunga Tanjung -- de jure and de facto -- the moment the former Chief Minister of Penang conceded defeat on the night of Polling Day, March 8. Nevertheless, the record shows, and Bunga Tanjung did not deny, that monies were repatriated elsewhere after that crucial date of March 8.

To justify their respective beings in the system, the RoS and ACA should move in to investigate on the issue of impropriation, and even possible criminal breach of trust, in this controversy. That's the core of governance, good or bad, and there must be due respect for the rule of law by all parties, victors or the vanquished.

Only then could we see the intellectual basis for a public debate, which is sorely missing for now despite the show of sheer tantrums. The core issue on the interpretation of the constitutional provisions of Bunga Tanjung -- de jure and and de facto -- mustn't be hijacked with sideshows that are hallmark of TV series like Desperate Housewives.

A gesture of sincerity to Penangites is for the relevant parties who were instrumental and responsible in repatriating the reported sum of RM350,000 to Bakti, a Kuala Lumpur-based elite organisation, to be returned to coffers in Penang.

I shall reserve my further action till an appropriate time from now till GE2013. We have ample time.

Chui Kah Peng's comments smacks of total arrogance.
There are many housewives we know who are no lesser than many so called professionals. And there are many so called professionals we know who are no greater than many gutter rat. Our mothers and grandmothers are all housewives and we are very proud of them.

As a voter, I would like to see my MP prioritize his objectives:
Find ways of enhancing the community they serve.
I wouldn't want my MP to find faults (or maybe not) of the previous administrations. I wouldn't want to see my MP doing nothing except complaining about others for 5 years or until the next election. Look! it's been how long since the last GE. Ask ourselves, what have our MPs contributed so far that has benefitted us. Stop complaining about not enough parking space for the MPs etc..... Bring up more vital issues like not enough parking space for the GENERAL PUBLIC. Start working guys....no more honeymoon. Remember, you're working for the voters and not for self interest.

Hi Jeff,

Refering to the news from The Star -

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2008/5/3/nation/21139208&sec=nation

In particular the following para,

"In a blog posting, Ooi stated that Mount Miriam Hospital had yet to receive funds from PBT but later corrected himself by stating that the hospital, along with the Penang Cheshire Home and Mental Health Association, had received RM3,572.63."

It implied that you have not verified & then post but later corrected yourself. What is your comments ????

JEFF OOI says: The CEO of Mount Miriam Hospital SMSed me at 11:38hr April 30 that it DID NOT receive any cheque from Bunga Tanjung, and thus PBT's claims of donation were untrue. Subsequently, at 16:08hr the same day, the hospital's CEO SMSed me again to state that PBT paid RM2,572.63 by CASH on April 1. Later, at 16:22hr, the CEO SMSed to tell me that people from Parti Gerakan was harassing him, asking him to clarify in my blog. I still keep the SMSes from the CEO for future reference with the authorities.

You could ( 1 ) get confirmation from Mt Miriam Hospital or ( 2 ) get a copy of the receipt that PBT obtained from the recipients of its donation.

I disagreed with commentor straightforward...

errmmm... An MP also requires to tell the people where has the money gone... RM 350K is not a small amount...

and after all... you need to know the problem... before you can improve it don't you? and sad to say... you can do nothing without money, i.e. Campaigning in General Election!

come to think of it... I'd only seen DAP's Selangor state rep Hannah Yeoh's campaign funding account... I remember Jeff you promised to work on it (by Maulidur / Good Friday holiday) as well... :P

JEFF OOI says: I am getting many emails from donors who wanted me to conceal their identities. Perhaps I should only mention the quantum and expenses. It's being compiled by my campaign volunteers whoa re now working on my election accounts which must be submitted by May 7.

and yes... I certainly hope all DAP/PR's reps could show us their I&E of campaign fund account... :)

===========================

Back to the issue... I'm not sure if Puan Sri Chui will try to make you look like a "coward"... but it is certainly interesting to see what Puan Sri Chui can offer... about the constitutional membership of PBT, and the 350K... :)

Dear YB,

I am confident that you have no interest in responding to Pn Sri Chui's calls for a "public debate". Nevertheless, may I offer another reason why you shouldn't, if it hasn't already occurred to you.

There is only one reason why Pn Sri wants a public debate - to save her face.

Obviously her name (and those of her fellow Bunga Tanjung members) is worth mud right now in the public eye, through every fault of her own. All she's trying to do now is repair her tarnished reputation somehow.

I have no doubt that, if you or YB Lim did actually agree to the public debate, you would demolish her handily. But what exactly does this "public debate" entail? Open to a live audience? Televised on national TV? Members of the press invited? How much time, effort and MONEY would be needed to organise such a thing?

All that's needed to settle this matter is a private meeting to sort it out. And if it can't be sorted out, then by all means take them to court. The public would certainly be behind you all the way.

So if you are to respond to Pn Sri Chui calling you and YB Lim cowards for not agreeing to her public debate, all you have to say is this: It is not the Penang State Government's concern to save Pn Sri Chui's face.

I wonder when the BN candidates are going to declare their election expenses. Plus how much of govt (meaning mine and yours) they have utilized during the campaigning period. What I do know is that the PM & DPM between them spent RM 800K of MY money on executive aircraft. That is on public record. Also on public record is a photo of Najib AND his daughter on one such aircraft.

I wouldn't want my MP to find faults (or maybe not) of the previous administrations. I wouldn't want to see my MP doing nothing except complaining about others
A note for Ginger on the above...

The 'longkangs' in Penang need to be clean up so that MOSQUITOES will not breed > denggi fever or worst still Malaria. I wish there are not so much of 'longkangs' cleaning or potholes to be filled. I don't think Jeff is complaining. I don't understand how you see it this way - RM350,000 to Bakti??? Maybe ginger has not seen some of the poor shelters/NGO in Penang island and mainland where their funding is hand to mouth. IF PBT knows what they are doing they would not have landed in this mess. Ladies are suppose to have more COMPASSION and LOVING KINDNESS...not playing politics along with their husbands. Hello there..."These are PUBLIC FUNDS" A Can of worms is being opened!! Will there be FOOD for the less fortunate in Penang if more Cans are discovered? Come on ..Ginger reflect on what you have written. 18 years of accumulated rubbish takes a long time to clean, unless those previous big boys and girls bergotong-royong and clean up the longkangs too. ...

Jeff,

I chance upon this video in the youtube while doing research on this issue which I am looking from different view.

Here is the video of what exactly Mdm Chui said in the press conference.

Hence, to find out whether she said it or otherwise, here is the youtube link
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz7B5EPAW_8

To ease the followings, she mentioned - We are NOT JUST housewives, a lot of us are also professionals...

This means that she did not insult the housewives as the writer to the SUN has said so as they themselves are in the housewives categories.

Is this the fault of the reporter or the writer to the SUN article ? I will leave it to the respected readers to decide.

Lets forget about who is the desperado. One thing I am very sure is that, we Malaysian are desperate to transform the country into a more pleasant state for everyone to live. Agree?

Jeff,
This issue is very easy to solve, ask PBT to request BAKTI to donate back the RM350,000 to Penang any associations. I think penangites are not interesting for the past, penagites was interested our future. How far can PR goverment can improve the penang from previous state goverment & give penang better future.

Cittas:
I think your comments were meant for "straightforward".

Jeff: Way to go! Don't lower yourself to their level with a public debate. Agree...there's no intelectual value to it.

YB Ooi

I think it is better to appologise for calling them 'desperate' even though it is not directly related to your call for transparency. They are calling for debate that is outside your main call, though your title of desperate housewives is catchy.

Appologise and be done with it, after which move on and see whether they will want to debate on the intellectual issue of governance.

Dont let them side track the issue.

JEFF OOI says: Agreed. I won't let anybody hijack the core issue.

ROS should take this seriously and investigate and take action if needed. I mean if this was done by DAP or PR, my god the ACA would have been on someones door step that very night. I don't really believe in ACA.

there are rules and everyones needs to observe the rules. No need to debate. If you have followed the rules, don't worry. Let the law take its course. ROS need to step in now and clarify the matter. That is bottom line cos we need to have transparency as this is not 'ah kung's'(grandfather's money)but donations from people and for people of Penang, not Bakti

The money is NOT yours. After your husbands lost the election why take revenge by transferring it out of reach. You think the wives of the new state govt. will use it on themselves. SUCH an honorable thought, THINK again.

'A THOUSAND APOLOGY' Ginger thanks for infm..
===================================================================
YB Jeff,
I hope you will not have to waste your energy handling ‘Tikus-tikus’ business from PBT. ROS seemed to take time to investigate? I can’t imagine how they will hold themselves in a Public Debate? I will donate 10 boxes of tissue papers to standby for them.

Seemed there are missing RM to be verified….

Reported in the STAR Wednesday April 30, 2008; PENANG: Persatuan Bunga Tanjung, the state organisation for wives of Barisan Nasional assemblyman and MPs, has been dissolved and the remaining funds, amounting to RM590,665, donated to charity organisations and Bakti.
The organisations which received the money were the Bureau of Learning Difficulties, Penang Cheshire Home, Penang Mental Health Association and Mount Miriam Hospital.

Former chief minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon’s wife Puan Sri Chui Kah Peng said they donated RM350,000 to Bakti while the remainder were given to the charity organisations.

All of us including the media were so caught up with PBT’s Drama that we did not verify 1+1+1=4 … can someone help to verify…. Thanks.

PBT Fund: RM590,665 minus RM350.000 for Bakti
Balance: RM 240, 665:
RM2,572.63 - Mount Miriam Hospital Pg
RM1,000 - Cheshire Home PG
RM1,000 - Penang Mental Health Association PG
RM220,000 – BOLD PG
TOTAL: RM224,572.63
Short of > RM16,092.37 - ???? who are the Recipients ???

PBT treasurer Khoo Siew Ling called on Jelutong MP Jeff Ooi to apologise to Chui …. “This allegation is not only baseless, but bordering on slander. We are able to produce an official receipt of the donation totalling RM2,572.63 for public view,” she said.

Anyone knows KHOO SIEW LING the PBT Treasurer ??? please HELP her to verify the numbers again. Maybe the Media – Sun or the Star or NST can help TOO. I hope ‘PBT is right…’

PUAN CHUI/PBT members;”please don’t ask for Public Debate… don’t waste YB Jeff and CM LGE’s time and they are no cowards. Both gentlemen are trying to save your face …understand ladies”.

There are many ladies in Penang who are excellent housewives and also professionals please don’t shy us lah… Get the numbers right and Move on with life…ok?
