Penang State Government
SWEARING IN
It's with much regret that I have to skip tomorrow's forum organised by The Star.
The swearing-in of Lim Guan Eng as Penang's new chief minister has to be held on the same day, March 11, instead of Monday, March 10.
The out-going CM Koh Tsu Koon has requested for the date as he wanted to witness the swearing-in of Abdullah in Kuala Lumpur today.
The state government, including what used to be called as the executive council, will be instituted in due course in tandem with the state constitution.
I will be busy joining my comrades in Penang, doing the strategic backroom work until the state government is fully sworn in.
FILES
Can anyone advise what new governments in Kedah, Perak and Selangor are doing during the leadership transition. What are the measures to prevent the incumbent menteris besar from removing files from their closet before they leave office.
I particularly don't trust Khir Toyo after seeing what he did to governance in Selangor in the last four years.
ELECTION MANIFESTO
Being a Penang-based candidate during the campaign, I have become more micro-focussed in state governance and oblivious of the mainstream politics. I need to correct this as soon as the new Penang government is instituted.
But we certainly would bind ourselves to DAP's Penang Election Manifesto as the compass for fulfilling our election pledges.
We would certainly look into the affairs of PDC and InvestPenang, and the tourism machinery, for a start. Transforming Penang's economy will have to start from here.
THANK YOU
The first moment after the preliminary results were announced on Saturday night, we pooled our efforts to maintain public order. Fortunately, despite some disturbing SMSes, nothing untoward happened.
The press were waiting since 8.30pm but we only managed to hold the first post-election press conference by 1.15am on Sunday. Sorry, my media friends.
Didn't get to sleep until 5.00am. The next internal meeting started at 11am, followed by another pressie at 1.00pm, and then a battery of other meetings.
Today, I will take to the Jelutong streets to thank the voters.
But to all Malaysians here and overseas who had donated to the JEFF 4 MALAYSIA campaign, volunteered their time and effort, and got involved one way or another to change a great deal of the Abdullah governance, here's a big thank you.
Preparation for GE2013 started yesterday. Stay on course!
MY ROLE IN PENANG
From my perspective, looking at the demographics and dynamics in economy, Penang can be an exemplary showcase of how a nation can thrive without succumbing to the outdated New Economic Policy.
I hope to play an active role in making this happen, the same way I did during the Penang campaign for GE2008.

YB Jeff,
Congratulations on your spectacular win. You have to get familiar with this organisation to uplift Penang economically http://www.frepenca.com/ All MNC's are connected to this organisation.

On Saturday 8th March 2008 a margin of hope was sparked across Malaysia by the outstanding progress the opposition parties had made against intransigent government forces.
Amongst the reverie and excitation a new dawn seemed to glimmer on Malaysia’s political horizon. The dark clouds of cronyism and nepotism, seen hanging over Malaysia over the past few years, appeared to move slightly in the breeze of change engendered by a salvo of public opinion.
At present the breeze will only ruffle feathers and maybe bring a few durians down on some people’s heads, but should this momentum continue for the next few years it promises to be the maelstrom much needed to bring a permanent change for this green and endearing land.
With the maelstrom will come the much needed rain to give sustenance to this country and a pleasant cleansing rain where negativity, oppression and egocentric small-mindedness will be swept away to herald in the brilliant future Malaysia much deserves.
Hope, hard work and community spirit will return to transform Malaysia, already being highlighted by faint rays of the new dawn, into the once proud and prosperous nation it deserves to be, once again holding its head high in the global family as the noble soul it already is.
Saturday was but the beginning, the Rakyat and those that govern must now take the next step to consolidate on the gains already made by the bravery and courageousness of the people and the new leaders. It will be a time of hope but with that comes responsibility, the responsibility for the people to ensure that the old ways of bribery and corruption are left behind and the path of honesty and truthfulness is taken instead - then and only then will The New Dawn really arrive.

Congratulations!
With your huge obligation to keep your promises, i urge you to please make decisions based on the greater good & not because you're obligated to satisfy the people of Penang.
Of course, everyone wants cheaper petrol, tax benefits, lower toll & other social benefits.. But developing countries should concentrate on economical policies before social policies. That is, when it comes to a point where you have to weigh between short term social benefit (instant gratification) & the long term benefits - please go for the greater good.
Now that you've won, please keep your vengence/hatred over BN out of the window & who knows, you may even go to them for advice :)
And yes, we ARE in dire needs to gradually eliminate the petrol subsidy.
That's my 2 sen btw, I may (very likely) be wrong but at least i've given my point of view.
Good luck!

Its been euphoria since saturday night but now that the dust has settled a bit I would first like to congratulate you and the opposition coalition on a job well done in winning 5 states !...something all Malaysians have never dared dream about yet when the reality dawned we have never been prouder of our votes .
The real work begins now in complying to your manifesto !
Make us all proud of the noble intentions being translated to noble deeds that benefit ALL Malaysians and in no way shall you and your colleagues fall into the trap of POWER that corrupts !
Make all Malaysians feel that all is fair and just especially in economic policies but also social ones.
I urge the senior Parlimentarians and state assemblymen from the coalition coach the new ones the proper way to carry out their duties and not fall behind in both professionalism and effectiveness and keep your ears to the ground as you go along.
Make all 5 states prosper with acute policies that generate wealth so that all the Rakyat benefits !
It may sound like a wish list but with proper governance and sensitivity it can be done and done Well !
Best of luck and we look forward to better times ahead and please ,please don't forget who gave you the mandate.
The Rakyat cannot be hoodwink anymore so the very best of luck to you and all in the new position of Power and may Power be the used for greater good and not personal gratification .

Hullo Jeff! I join in the numerous people who have wished you congrats! Good luck! ...and though not all can walk with kings and bear the common touch - I think just remembering these words will make a lot of difference.
I'm also passing on a comment from my mom below (who's having some IT trouble logging in to typekey :P):
Jeff,
As a regular reader and supporter, wish to share my comments:
a) The share market dropped significantly and the loss in one day was abt RM90billion as at Monday March 10
b) To gain confidence of investors, we may have to adopt losses for construction of projects else the loss of confidence may cause more harm
c) if there is no escape clause to abort the project, we may end up having to award the project in any case
d) alternatively renegotiate for cancelation of certain clause providing for escalation costs and initiate award contract quickly
e) the success of the opposition party taking over the govt will be determined by the speed of evaluating projects and deciding on whether to award on renegotiated terms.
f)oppostion after gaining seats should spend more time on boosting economy rather than witch hunting
g) how to improve on transport system thus saving usage of fuel and its subsidy (govt/ tax payers money)
h) how to curb petty crimes and make sure the police does their job.

Congratulations YB Jeff Ooi! The challenge for the DAP state government is too fulfill their election promises of a clean, transparent and efficient Government. The DAP has been given the mandate and they will need to govern well to show the UMNO based government that their divide and rule strategy is no longer relevant.
I would like to congratulate Koh Tsu Koon too for being very magnimonous in defeat and ensuring a smooth transition.
Keep up the momentum! I believe I will be seeing less of you at your Starbuck Centrepoint, PJ hangout.

Umno Penang is already making noises about the new Penang state govt wanting to do away with the NEP in the state and claiming that this will make the Malays in Penang unhappy.
This has to be nipped in the bud. Early. Before troublemakers and agent provocateurs start getting involved in pitting Malaysians against Malaysians.
Umno Penang has to be confronted and asked to state in public what exactly they mean by the NEP, how they interpret it, and who they think should benefit from it.
No more fuddy-duddy obfuscations. No more excuses of national security or sedition.
Get the facts out into the open for a reasoned, transparent and dispassionate discussion, devoid of emotion and racial angst.
Show up the bankrupt and antediluvian thinking of Penang Umno in the cold light of day.
And at the same time, invite the more open-minded in Penang Umno to consider carefully the implications of continuing with a traditionalist and statist view of the NEP in a globalised world where a person's ethnicity and religion carry no plus points.

I return to work today after fully rest my body and mind. For most of us we are just as busy as opposition parties members since last thursday (attending the ceramah at Han Jiang) then following the election events and so many calls/sms among us on Sat evening and sunday early morning.
So I like to congragualte not only the opposition parties for leading us to this sweet victory but also those rakyat out there who made this happen. Power to the people.
Let me contribute one small information which you may already know. today when I met up with several Japanese expatriates in Penang. There are much worry of what has happened in our election and there are many calls from their HQ asking for updates. I believe a quick action by our new Pg Gevernment is require to quickly assure these investors confidences.
I believe this action is necessary, after all these MNCs have invested millions of ringgits in Penang and hire several thousands of penang people. meeting up with you will help to stop any fears they may have.

Junior Lim, you are silly to encourage people not to follow law.
The rule of law, not rule by law is what we want. BN did some blunders in traffic summonses discount campaign.
Although I owed MPPP a few compounds, but I will not say thank you to Penang new government.
Everyone shall not pay their new summonses issued by MPPP because we can wait for another 5 years to vote another new government who can waive our summonses again.
Seems DAP is repeating same mistake as BN and following same donkey's trick.
YB Penang CM, please stop this kind of free goodie nonsense popular policy!
My advice to YB Lim, new Penang Chief Minsiter,
Do not need to hurry in annoucing many popular policies to make you like a hero for poor people.
Sit down with your team and invite some experts in social, economic, crime, etc to a conference to gather best ideas on how to run Penang.
From the momemt DAP won the Penang seats last Saturday, I already feel Lim Guan Eng is better be learning fast as a true leader. I already feel very dissapointed with junior Lim for the first day he is becoming Penang Chief Minister.
1. Announced to abolish deputy CM post immediately after GE result was known.
2. Waiving summonses and compounds shall not happen in any civil society. His message to us is don’t pay compounds, you are above the law and law can be twisted according to political agenda.
My question to Junior Lim is did his has the power to waive summonses and compounds?
Rule of law and not rule by law as Senior Lim alway criticised BN. Unfortunately Junior Lim seems does not understand his dad’s struggle to build a civil society.

congrats Jeff! but the opposition coalition will have its work cut out from Day 1.. Trying to take over the 'machinery' that has been mired inefficiency and "affirmative' programs is going to be Hell.. And you cannot trust PAS first, PKR second. Look at the chosen MB of Perak.. DAP is already boycotting the swearing in... My bet is except for Penang, the new oppostion govts will not last the complete term.... Good luck anyway

Hi Jeff,
Glad to know that you are playing an important role for Exco. Congratulations to you and the Penangites!
After Penang CM announced, there are overwhelming news reported about new government next step & the strategy. However, no single media (not even Malaysiakini) that I know of is able to provide a full report, I need to buy a few newspapers to make sure I don't miss out any important news (as I am hopeful to the new government). Is there any good website that you would suggest for us, Penangites to go after for latest development in new government?

March 13, 2008 11:24 PM
congratz!!!
Now, governs the 5 states successfully. Show the rakyat that you can govern states and then Malaysia nation especially in economy, safety, justice, education, state administration, transparency and many more.
if you excel in the five states, you can convince the rakyat to choose you as a ruling party at federal level; the same manifesto or strength of BN.
in your future manifesto, pay attention to investor/ corporate sectors. Draft the manifestos as if you are going to become the Malaysia ruling party. Alike BN, play with statistics and numbers; say 10 million for education, say millions for safety etc. opposition should have shadow cabinet line-up to prepare these manifesto.
Now, concentrate on Sabah and Sarawak parliamentary and state seats. pkr (or the opposition front) must show that it is a party for all races and ethnics ie bajau, kadazan, dusun etc. most of them vote BN because their mentality (i might be wrong) is BN brings development. if you can develop the 5 states, they can open their eyes and vote opposition in next general election.
Pas, pkr, dap etc must groom leaders or candidates for the 13th general election. Pick candidates with strong education background so that people have faith in them able to govern states (or Malaysia). Starting from today, these candidates must turun padang to list down all the problem faces by rakyat and tackled the problems; win their heart and show them that you do works. if the candidates don't have enough time and energy, seek help from opposition supporters or appoint assistances as many as you need.BN won uncontested in 11 parliamentary seats meaning opposition lacks 11 leaders/ candidates.
Starting today until the next GE, keep record of mismanagements, corruptions (power and money), wrongdoings of BN for your campaigning points.
Most of the main media in Malaysia are controlled by the ruling party. opposition candidates must use alternative medium such as internet or blogs to convey their messages, counter the ruling party allegations, reveals corruptions by BN etc. if the candidates are busy, ask the party supporters to run the blog; maybe can elect media committee. The opposition have won five states and KL; make as many press conference as you can to address your developments, progress etc. each states have its own radio station; use these opportunity to deliver the messages.
Work very hard during this 4 or 5 years!!
If not, rakyat will vote for BN in the next election
if selangor can beat pahang or sabah or sarawak in economy, safety, education etc performances, the sabahan and the sarawakian and pahang people might choose the opposition in 13th GE.
The opposition must pick an outstanding state as a benchmark while governing the 5 states. If say pahang attracted 10 foreign investors, the five states must have more than 10 investors. If sabah crime rate is 10 %( let say it is a state with lowest crime rate), the opposition must have lower than 10% of crime rate. The examples are endless.

yb jeff,
It’s disgusting to read spinning gasing chun wai’s article in the star today. I refuse to dignify it with a link here. Not only does he downplay the bloggers’ role and efforts in the outcome of the elections, but he also demeans jeff ooi.
The only positive thing in the article is that he admitted the mainstream media has to relook at its editorial policy given the maturity of malaysian readers.
JEFF OOI says: Let's pray Chun Wai will start the change he called for, starting from his own paper, The Star.
err..i hate to wake you up from dreamland to break this to you, but you kinda missed the bus there, my delusional datuk.
spinning gasing chun wai, spin it any way you want. Our jeff won. And you had better address him as yang berhormat, geddit?

Shiuji, I won't worry to much about the stock market. It is just having a minor correction due to the political change. Any true value of stock will reflect in the long term.
Anyways, talking about the project. Any BS project should be stopped right away. The money should be channel into R&D of biomedical, biofuel, solar power and education. I even say build a library where high schoolers can go hang out rather than Malls. We would definitely see a high tech Silicon Island in the long run with proper talent.
Also, I read about subsidy for the poor and unfortunate. IMHO, I consider the move ineffective to solve the problem. On top of any money given, there should be a retraining program to help the people to get a better job.
Another point I wanted to make is the need to change the immigration policy. Malaysia should encourage any technology leader or PhD to come to Malaysia. Malaysia's cultural diversity is great and people will like to come to Malaysia for research if there is opportunity. (Think US, Singapore)
