Wet dreams

I want to claim back my life as a blogger.

For a start, I will be speaking at a roundtable organised by the Institute of Policy Studies, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore on April 9, 2008.

The roundtable discussion is titled 'Impact of ICTs in the Malaysian Election - Lessons for Singapore'.

The organisers told me that GE2008 had been described as one in which the Internet and other technologies played a crucial role in triggering a political tsunami in Malaysia. On the other hand, Singaporeans have been engrossed by our general election results and started to have wet dreams... which is not a bad thing in an open society.

Frankly, I am having wet dreams, too, but with eyes wide open.

Penang roles in agriculture are negligence.
http://www.ncer.com.my/en/sectors/agriculture/index.html

For preprocessing and packaging, Penang are not adequate as well, as cost of transportation, preservation, packaging and employment are not cheap. And the land are not cheap.

Oh wait, did I mentioned land are not cheap in Penang? Even for Perai?

Perhaps this is solved the puzzle : converting Penang state land for agriculture hub usage. And bet who will own this land.

Apparently, there are five bloggers in Parliament instead of us having five ISA detainees in Parliament.

Having raised expectations so high, rest assured that you five are going to disappoint the public. The lack of experience is going to tell. The honeymoon period will be over soon and you will have to show that you can deliver. Otherwise, your win will be just a flash in the pan, and it will all be over at the next GE. I am betting that whatever you do in the end will be too little, too late. Many of the very same people who are praising you now will start criticising you. Only a real friend will tell you that. You are in for a losing battle.

Why do I get the impression that joefern sound like a very, very sour grape???

Fernz,

You sound like you are sending a blackmail... or you are gazing a crystal ball...~~

==============================

Jeff Ooi:

Prefer not to mention the YB... LOL... anyway... can you update on this talk (as in time and venue)? Am studying in NUS so most probably will be able to join the talk :D

I believe you are now a celebrity status.Even Singaporeans are knocking at your door.I hope you can show them your stuff and make Penang proud.

Just carry extra pair of underwear! A lot of masking perfume too!!!

Jeff, congrats again on your recent successes in politics. I was one of the people rooting for you, and believing that you can make a positive difference. I look forward to witness your upcoming achievements in time to come.

I admit I do miss your regular blog entries although I understand you are now serving the nation in different ways and will inevitably have less time to blog. Still, I do hope that you will keep blogging regularly, as per your first sentence of this blog entry.

My stand on blogging is clear. Bloggers should never get into politics and compromise their “neutrality” although politicians can get into blogging to get their message across through this alternative media form.

Also, using blogs to further a personal or Hidden Agenda, is not unknown as witnessed by the ability of five bloggers to get into Parliament on March 8 at the 12 th GE. Bloggers should be considered as unknown angels in politics. Better the devil you know. I am sure all these bloggers in Parliament will fail to live up to the people’s expectations, having raised them so high, and will not be fielded as candidates in the next round, and if they are fielded by some miracle, they will be rejected by the people. That’s my prediction! I am playing the devil’s advocate here.

The “weakness” of blogs is that they often don’t subscribe to the “ethics” of journalism and thereby compromise their “credibility” among readers who know better, although quite a number of blogs in Malaysia, for example, are in fact run by ex-journalists who used to be PR Journalists with the mainstream media during the Mahathir administration. This could be a case of sour grapes among bloggers. Some bloggers even liberally use four letter words in their blogs at every opportunity and probably think it's "cool" to do so. Four letter words merely convey an emptiness of thought.

There are interesting differences and parallels as well between the media in Europe, America and the Third World.

The main work of newspapers in Europe, after a honeymoon period of three months, is to bring down the government of the day. Newspapers believe that they should run the country. They think that they can do a better job than an elected, or non-elected, government. Readers vote for newspapers daily when they buy papers, is the thinking among journalists. In that sense, they are "tested" in the court of public opinion daily.

Of course, many people buy newspapers just to find out what "crap" and insults to the intelligence they are printing today and they read between the lines. This is where the blogs come in.

Given a choice between a country with a government and no newspapers, and a country with no government but newspapers, is the latter a better alternative?

The US media, for example, has a three-prong policy viz.

1) everything American, no matter how unimportant to the rest of the world, is important and must be carried;

2) anything non-American can only be carried if it has significant American interest; and

3) anything non-American, which does not have a significant American interest, can still be carried provided it is entertaining but only as a filler i.e. the briefest of items to fill an empty space somewhere. Hence, a man who goes up a coconut tree naked in Sungei Siput and refuses to come down, will get carried in the news, but not Samy Vellu being thrown out after 30 years of squatting and defecating on the people.

The philosophy of the US media is to make money through "entertainment" while serving American interests worldwide.

Political writing in Malaysia in the mainstream media is all propaganda, advertising and PR, sometimes for "angpow" in cash, often in kind. Where no angpow is involved, only "approved" and "naive" reporters are sent out to cover government functions. If they start thinking and ask any intelligent questions, they are quickly replaced. Journalism Malaysian and Third World style!

Business writing in this country in the mainstream media is all hype, advertising and PR, often for "angpow". They are willing to hype up the share prices of any company for a fee.

Our political and business reporters are as “crooked” as our businessmen, politicians and bankers. Money is the most important thing, is their joint philosophy. This could be something carried to the extreme to become a peculiarly Malaysian thing. No wonder AlibaBabaism and Crumbs-Taking for Votes, among other deviations, sabotaged the New Economic Policy.

http://fernzjoefernandez.blogspot.com

Joefernz is suggesting to you to do what the experienced BN guys used to do....you know the kind where you go for evening tea empty handed and come back home with a stack of currency? Well, you can surely move mountains very quickly if you followed Joefernz's expectations.

Always been interested in how Singapore reacts to Malaysian political situation.

Wish I cud be a little bird there on Apr 9. Alas we mortals have to earn our nasi and kuah.

I hear the Sing authorities are jittery after our polls.

Maybe they are scared that Malaysian new media are bad influence on Singaporeans.

Maybe there are more Mr Browns waiting to be born.

On the bright side, we have the academics who are willing to study the phenomenon. If only UM did something as proactive as this.

Hey Jeff, I hope you are switching off your lights tonight.

It is EARTH HOUR!

WET DREAM YB JEFF OOI (YANG BLOGGING)

JEFF OOI says: By the way, nothing has really changed. TALK IS still CHEAP if you just need to talk empty. There is a real world out there beyond blogs and Internet.

MP Jeff Ooi,
I guess blogging is for MPs and ADUNs in waiting and losers. These people have all the time in the world to blog and chat. Real MPs and real ADUNs are at work - real work and not hiding themselves in the virtual world. Frankly when we see you still blogging we see you as still doing nothing and wasting public trust in you to be Yang Berkhidmat and not Yang Blogging. You yourself said that "There is a real world out there beyond blogs and Internet". I think you are not able to go out beyond your virtual blogging world. Pity on you.

Yes TALK is CHEAP and hope that all your BLOGGING must not be equally CHEAP.

Heard before this that people said you can put a donkey or a monkey as a representative for BN and people will still vote. I hope it is not true that people said during PRU12 that you can also put a donkey or a monkey as a BR rep and people will still vote.

MP Jeff Ooi, isn't it that in such a voting system people put islam, malays, chinese, indians, ideas like socialism, democracy, justice etc in boxes and then they are asked to choose a box. Boxed people behave the same way either BN or BR.

Imagine now you can even have MPs and ADUNs who are not from the particular voting area - and you also have voters from outside the voting area voting for these MPs and ADUNs. Hence we have aliens as reps and aliens as voters.

If that is the case, why don't we get Bush, Hillary and Putin to be the reps or prime minister instead since leadership is no longer related to the people of the place anymore?

Cheers and happy wet dream blogging!

On a serious note: Jeff you are a very visible public figure and political correctness is expected:wet dreams? In Singapore suggest you say "nocturnal emission".

On a less serious note: we used to call it map-making-in-your-sleep:"wah, why yours like map of sinapore" "Adoi... like Greenland" "like philippines....so many small islands."

Sock it to 'em in Singapura.

salam mr. fern, why throw tantrum like dat in public. no nice la sir. kita org dewasa meh. wat u wrote is merely a rehash of what has already been embedded in our consciousness. bukan kita saja susah org lain pun susah juga.

even b4 hindraf hit the streets i already wrote to mic expressing my concerns on the implications of street protests. in humble fashion i wrote to remind their duties to the indian citizens. 3-4 emails no reply until 2day.

sir, bukan semlm warga india menglibatkan diri didalam politics. malah dari zaman perikatan lg. jadi dimana silap nya perjuangan kaum india? kenapa komplain sampai begitu. jika dihindar dari penglibatan, itu crita lain.

sir, no need to easily point fingers to others when we ourselves fail 2 take the opp.

i blv mr jeff ooi will hv a good career in politics. he is well-educated, learns quickly, and willing to low down & listen to the rakyat.

no need to crystal ball; 2moro has not yet come. keep a +ive mind. the day will come when we will identify ourselves as malaysians, paving d way 4 our children 2 live wout fear or favor.

Barisan Rakyat should consolidate and recapitalize its victories.

One, raise the bar on Malaysian politics. Rebrand Opposition as the Guardian of the peoples' interests and rights, as well as the State Government for nationalprogress.

In other words, federate your presence in the voter's mind so that 'Barisan Rakyat' gets elevated to equal 'barisan nasional'.

The rebranding can be a continual exercise drawing inputs from a professional PR firm, the NGO sphere (like blogsphere) and a body of coordinators from the component parties in all six states. Benefits accrue from this: you get organized as a single and therefore stronger entity, you develop a common and consistent communication, and you minimize overlaps, contradictions,over-exuberances, and resource-wastage.

BR won because the rakyat were fed-up by the present govt and because all forces were aligned together to create commonality of interest that resulted in cross-support.

BN knows that and will work to break up the Opposition on the assumption that it is a marriage of convenience. The rebranding exercise is therefore important to close the gap, instill comradeship across parties and create a united front that allows a buffer zone behind the frontline. BN will have to expend effort to break that brand first in order to go beyond the buffer zone.

Right now and to many, BR looks like a composition represented in state exco's. You only see some faces and read some statements. BR should be more. It should be a unified reinforced complex that cross-shares ideas, resources, assets and findings.

You're not a rocket next to an eye next to a white moon. You're the dacing inverted to become the chandelier of lights battling the dark forces with your championing of transparency.

There's also no reason why you can't start your own mainstream paper since you are a government with the major share of state GDP in the country. Let the umno minister say no and then try to answer if majority means all.

Two, expand your investigative resources. Within two weeks after the maelstrom, we already find land scams in Penang, state documents bonfired in Kedah and Selangor, and differences of opinion regarding the actual condition of PKFZ, as well as in the scope of what is meant by 'declaration of assets'. Pursue all with the sharpness of Sherlock Holmes. Leve no stone unturned, add others.

For instance, Michael Backman wrote that Kazhastan has the world's second biggest oil deposit - what did Petronas spend that RM1 Billion on in Egypt which produces no oil, and nothing in Kazhastan?

In fact, given the importance of Petronas to everyone in the country, why are its accounts still not made public, especially when we have at this moment the nettlesome problem of what has been done with Terengganu's petroleum wang ehsan? And as PAS will ask, where has the RM900 million gone that came out of the payment for the Sukhoi jets? While those are being pursued, do a cost-benefit analysis of the Monsoon Cup regatta and other umno projects.

Drill in at the state levels and converge to the federal level. Your investigations in the six states (including FT) should resonate similar investigations in the other states.

Your game plan is to bring the culprits to book, get the money back for the rakyat, and create parliamentary pressure to cut the ACA from executive control by the present Putrajaya administration.

If they can destroy state documents compliciting deals in land, licenses and contracts, what confidence can anyone have they won't instruct the ACA to cold-storage hot investigations?

Three, do something big for the bloggers and the youths of this country. They are the ones who will be inheriting the future of this nation. Some of the brains are in the NGOs, incidentally also cultivated by the other barisan, if you would care to notice. Integrity and justice are the hallmarks of volunteer social organizations; some of the NGOs have been contaminated by racial overtones. Be the first to get them back to what they should be, and by that, gain another source of members, especially the young and educated. Also, create communities of networks. Interest groups can be formed in much the same way people come together to enjoy the same hobbies or to pursue business opportunities. Create a business model that will tap the power of e-communities as a channel to bring youths together tiered from housing estates to districts, constituencies etc. These communities will provide cross-sectional input and output for the realpolitik of Barisan Rakyat.

Four, do your own analyses. For too long, the rakyat have been fed all sorts of myths. Create our own competitiveness index that operates on normalized microdata superior to the macrodata used by IMD, WB etc. The rakyat need to know the bottomline in order to do creative destruction as a prelude to making real transformational changes, otherwise it will be same-old all over again. Find out what really is happening in the manufacturing and services sectors in terms the people can relate to such as salaries, conditions, prospects and new pipelines. Never take Miti's figures for granted. And there's no reason you can't grandstand the other barisan with regards new ideas on how to make Malaysia more competitive and successful in all she does in the international arena of business, industry and innovation.

Barisan Rakyat should be the spearhead of change for Malaysia.

Five, do your own coalition SWOT. Jointly determine with no holds-bar on what are the biggest potential flashpoints with the coalition now. Do it now rather than later, then join hands to cross the hurdle now rather than try to rationalize it later. Get all party members to come to an early understanding before rolling out projects or checks-and-balance programs.

Is it DAP's overexuberance to redress what was wrong? Is it PKR in between? Is it PAS' islamic state and stand on huddud laws? Which is the most critical limiting factor in the configuration? Think what happens if huddud takes center stage. It will polarize DAP to one side and split PKR down the middle. When then happens to the Indian votes and the groundswell of dissatisfied voters in Sabah and Sarawak? While at this, think about the strengths as well to reinforce the exercise of limiting the weaknesses. Why is DAP strong - more brains and professionals? Why is PKR strong - malaysianness? Why is PAS strong - integrity and purity of purpose?

Manifest these strengths. A pure professional malaysian voter base is the mainspring of a better future for all malaysians and for Malaysia in a globalized world where governance, like eco-concern, has become a premium and value-add.

In the business world, the new catchphrase nowadays is 'making profit from values'.

Six, don't forget the other nagging issues. There are many and they must be highlighted for final resolution. Today we read some MOE officers being asked to stop saying no more chinese schools will be built. But the kerisman had smiled as though there was no such thing before GE12. So who's right, who's wrong and what's the real truth? If the people of Penang are angry that KSK has ignored the need for more chinese schools, just imagine what is happening in other states. The advanced countries in the west are falling over themselves to sino-nize their courses and increasing their mandarin classes to meet the avalanche of demand for such courses, and here with over one hundred years headstart, we let some zealots shoot all of us, including the Malays, in the foot and through the earth.

Get to the bottom of the situation and elicit a no-frills, straight-up and clear statement on exactly what the other barisan's stand is on chinese education in malaysia.

No parent would like to hear of the child coming back and saying that the teacher had advised the students not to sign up for chinese classes if they think they have no confidence, because the teacher says if they don't pass the subject, they can't get their full Sijil (for the whole exam). And sometimes you wonder if mischief's afoot when the national schools hold vernacular classes with only ten minutes break after the last school bell. Can kids concentrate on empty stomachs?

Seven, operationalize a can-do race-relations mechanism for everyone beyond the compact of the NEP. Don't just say you'll remove it. If you do that, you will create a vacuum. Then what? Substitute with the NPE. National poverty eradication independent of race. If you have a predominantly chinese wet market, create space for integration of malay and indian sellers. If you open tenders and find there are more malay companies applying than others but their prices are just eclipsing the lowest, find a way to coalesce a number of them to re-offer a new package at least equal to the lowest so that you can spread the jobs, and build more base skills. Get the word out on this so that those who normally don't respond to tenders who can do without these jobs will continue to not respond to them so as to allow the more displaced to come up. And throw in professional advice and project monitor on how to deliver and what are delivered so that sub-standards are eradicated.

Teach people how to help each other up. Tap the holiest thing of this country - the intrinsic groundswell of goodwill we have within us for one another, regardless of race, creed, background etc.

Eight, envision a new Malaysia and get everyone involved to help realize it, including those in Sabah, Sarawak and Johor, and, the Malaysian Woman. If you like, include the singaporeans, thais and indonesians. Get BR to write things that intelligent people can read and ponder upon. What's the state of this nation, what trends are out there in the world, and what can we all do to ride on them?

You look at the people in the other barisan. One group is a bunch of no-initiative frightened clueless bureaucrats as yes-men following mindlessly mr sleepwalker; the other is a bunch of craven greedy opportunistic winner-sapu-semua up-yours bodek machines who split the people, bankrupt the nation and destroy all in their paths.

Console yourselves you're still sane.

Jeff, Neil should be recruited into your think-tank.Seriously. I have always appreciated his thoughts analysis.

YB Jeff,

Congrats,I think many strategies need to draw up to improve Penang in fields like agriculture, tourist attractions, industrial planning and also attracting more FDI. Those are the things need to be done, and hope the government will deliver to their promise.

We will Penangites are watching carefully and the UMNO and BN leaders are trying to instill hatred among races so that they will gain for their political agendas. The Penang government is facing uphill task in building up a strong and economically viable Penang to face competition especially recession can be felt in the US now. Good luck and all the best.

RTK from Rethinking Times, you are obviously a BN cybertrooper as you have only started blogging this year in March.

According to your logic, Jeff shouldn't be allowed to watch tv, go shopping or do anything not related to his work as MP. Your 'Rethinking Times' is obviously wrong.

If you feel strongly that politicians shouldn't be allowed to contest in states they do not reside in, please feel free to inform the Election Commission. This matter is the responsibility of the EC and not Jeff.

Hi Jeff,

Hate to wake you up from your wet dream (please clean up the mess, ha-ha!).

Now that u guys are in control can we have a website or blog where Penangites can directly connect to YB Lim Guan Eng?

JEFF OOI says: Online strategy has been the hallmark we won big GE2008. It's certainly in the pipeline to host a Penang site whether within or outside the ambit of state resources. Right now, we are managing the urgent issues after the takeover, especially those that impact on the grassroots, the investors and the business community. We need to keep the economy running on its prime first and foremost.

It will be our way of contributing through the internet to improve Penang. I am sure u guys are going to need a lot of help after inheriting "Darul Sampah" from Gerakan.

Hi Jeff, actually i was alway not in mood to post comment.... but i really fed up with all our politician in Malaysia. Because it seems they don't understand politic and how it works.... Y said so? The ppl already cast their vote on march 8 and it already clearly show that ppl already tired with Gerakan to taking of charge Penang.

Anyway no offense for anyone, i solute to Lee Kah Chuan that he is step down to let new blood to come in anyway he know that ppl already give him up. This is actually how politic works.... when u are out it really mean u are out....but those ppl that i hate the most is Koh, Teng, Koey & etc... after losing still want to keep hold of their post. what is this? Get over it pls....

In Malaysia we have Chuah Scandal, In Hong Kong we have Edison & In US we have Spitzer....but Edison and Spitzer already went and gone....u suppose to leave the politic as what u tell everyone in the press conference....but y he still giving comment on politic? I think this is the way of Malaysian politician do and believe...NEVER GIVE UP & NEVER CATCH UP BY THEIR AGE....So this is a very good opportunity for u all Jeff...if they still keep on this type on politic style they will be gone forever.......

Jeremy Greenleaf

Hi Jeff

Pl see below,I believe that you should make a point to the organiser there:

"Malaysian blogger Mr Jeff Ooi and Malaysiakini's Mr Steven Gan have been invited by the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) to speak at the Lee Kuan School of Public Policy.

The seminar, entitled Impact of ICTs in the Malaysian Election - Lessons for Singapore, will be held on 9 April 2008.

We welcome the speakers from Malaysia and look forward to hearing their recent experiences in regards to the recently held elections in Malaysia.

But we can't. The talk is not open to the Singaporean public.

This raises the obvious question about foreigners speaking in Singapore."

I know this is not a good place for this, but I just feel like ranting...

Malaysiakini Chinese version reported that the rejection of Penang government having a bipartisan (PR and BN) local council, with a reason "DAP member hardly accept to work with BN councilors", is extremely unacceptable...

When will Penang revive the local election? Let's say after the Penang first revived local election, there will definitely be bipartisan, or even tripartisan in the local councils, by then shall DAP councilors "refuse to work with BN councilors"?

The idea of including professionals with non-partisanship into the local government is good, but 5 out of 22? not even 1/4 of the seats...

The Penang state government should lay out a detailed plan and schedule for local government...

Why not allow a bipartisan + independents city council as a start?

Remember local election is DAP's core battle cry for the Vote 2008...
