Nomination Day
Tomorrow, Feb 24, is Nomination Day for GE2008.
Eligible voters in the country will get a parade of candidates offering themselves to contest for 222 seats in the Parliament, and several hundreds for seats in the respective state assemblies.
My fate lies in the hands of voters in Jelutong, Penang. The Nomination centre is at Penang Free School.
To me, and to many others I believe, it's time for change. This is our theme song, Berubah.
The English version is here, and the Mandarin version is here.
Multi-racial by constitution
By constitution, both DAP and Gerakan are multi-racial parties. Going by the announced candidate list, DAP will field four Indian candidates for the Penang state constituencies (three lawyers and an academic), Gerakan none.
In GE2008, with Koh Tsu Koon at the helm, Gerakan is contesting 12 Parliament and 31 state seats. All 43 candidates are Chinese Malaysians.
In contrast, DAP is fielding a record high of 30 lndian Malaysians -- 10 for Parliament and 20 for state seats.
Perhaps, with Umno dominance, both DAP and Gerakan can't get Malay candidates standing on their tickets.
Oh yes, after Nomination Day and the media shall blackout on non-BN parties? We will see.
JOM UBAH!
Comments
The Berubah song tunes is from Pet Shop Boys - Go West. Do you have a license using their music? Anyway, i personally don't like it when people used other songs music to make their own songs.
JEFF OOI says: Our Publicity Department led Teresa Kok understands the copyright obligations.
But that's not important is it? Indeed Malaysia has the need for change. Let's hope the coming election will be the first step to that CHANGE.
Jeff, wish you all the best in the coming election.

Hi, Jeff
Check out the in-depth special report ("Malaysia at the crossroads") in the Singapore Straits Times, Feb 23.
Chow Kum Hor, the paper's Malaysia correspondent, did a good write-up ("Keen contest likely as state seeks 'reinvention'") on Penang.
Btw, Jeff - I'd advise you and your party colleagues to be circumspect when giving interviews to reporters from the Singapore. You don't want people like Zam and Azalina to claim that foreign media are taking an unhealthy interest in this election.

Jeff, since your nominations is at Penang Free School, I am sure you'd have notice that the recently installed signage which is written almost entirely in Jawi. This is kind of islamisation that is happening in Penang.
I wish you the best.

Hi Uncle Jeff,
Please don't put "The End - Undilah DAP". It's sound not good for DAP. It should be "The end of BN - Undilah DAP".
Just my 2 cents and pls inform the original author to re-post again.

i applaud the decision to field more non-chinese in DAP election line up.
In an ideal world, we would have multiple parties capable of challenging for the top spot. But in Malaysia where we are ruled by only one party ever since independence, it's far from an ideal world. The best bet would be a strong 2 party system. In order for DAP to be that other party, it has to be ethnically blind. Over the years, one of the reason certain quarters of Chinese folks decided not to support DAP is because when it comes to election time, DAP aligns itself in coalition with ultra-islamist party like PAS. Add MCA's propaganda machine to the mix, that scares the shit out of those Chinese people. And other races won't support DAP because the name is synonymous to 'Chinese only'.
Cross the ethnic line, be a stronger party. Cultivate more moderate centrist ideas. I know we say it every 4 years but for once, let's try to change something for good this time.

I second Alvin's idea that DAP or any non-BN parties should be "ethnically blind". I strongly believe that no party could defeat BN if it is using the same tactic (ethnic based) as BN. BN has the best "solution" for race based political strategy.
Anyway, for the benefit of Malaysia's future, please get rid of ethnical based political agenda.
It's time to change but change what? Changing who leads the government is not sufficient. More important is changing the mentality of leaders and focus on the interest of the people instead of personal gain.
Let pray and hope for a better Malaysia tomorrow.
