‘A BLOGGER HAS GOT TO DO WHAT HE HAS TO DO’ AHIRUDIN ATTAN

BLOGGER Jeff Ooi, 52, may be contesting in his first general election, but he’s far more well-known than more seasoned politicians.

MyPaper_080227.jpgIn fact, the opposition Democratic Action Party candidate and former business intelligence analyst is expected to win the Jelutong seat in Penang comfortably on March 8 and make Malaysian history as the first blogger to become an MP.

my paper spoke to Mr Ooi in Penang yesterday after the launch of his first book, i-Witness, to raise funds for his campaign.

Hi Jeff, 10 days to go to the polls. Any regrets?

No regrets. A man, I mean a blogger, has got to do what he has to do.

You quit Gerakan to join the DAP last year. What made you?

I despise Barisan Nasional’s (BN) race-based politics. Gerakan, a multiracial political party, is endorsing BN’s race-based ideology. I quit as I can’t agree with this. True enough, Gerakan is fielding no non-Chinese candidates in the election.

And the DAP has no problem with that?

No problem, The leadership courted me when I was still with Gerakan.

You are a Kedah native contesting in Penang. Should that be an issue?

Not an issue now, As Chia Kwang Chye, Lee Kah Chun and Teng Hock Nam are (also not) born in Penang. No double standards please.

What is Jelutong like – the people, the issues?

It’s an ageing constituency as only 15.7 per cent of the people are below 35 years old. Jelutong has been punished by BN while it was in opposition hands. It needs to catch up with development and better quality of life. Bread and butter issues reign high. There are strong ill feelings against inequitable distribution of national wealth. Now that the cost of living has gone up, unhappiness is fermenting.

Jelutong strongman and DAP chairman Karpal Singh paved the way for you to contest in Jelutong. What’s the party’s strategy?

Checks and balances to BN. People feel cheated for voting in BN with a 91 per cent majority in 2004.

How do you see yourself stepping into Karpal's shoes?

I am a blogger who speaks good Malay, can bring up people’s agenda in the Parliament that BN candidates can’t and dare not.

If you get into Parliament, what will you be fighting for?

Say no to race-based politics. Legislate to ban race-based political parties.

Will you promote blogging? Will you have time to blog?

I will blog live in the parliament (if elected).

What if you lose the election?

Go back to blogging, and shout outside the Parliament.

I disagree with one point. It's inaccurate, and it could be fatal for Rocky to say that this blogger is "expected to win the Jelutong seat in Penang comfortably on March 8".

I am facing a formidable giant with the 3M -- Money, Machinery and Media -- and my chances may be defeated at the 11th hour. Let's not count the egg before it's hatched.

I am still campaigning very hard.

A blogger is your local parliamentary representative without borders.

He can interface with his constituents anywhere in any time zone through the medium of the web.

If he's not at the keyboard, what he has posted in reply sits there for all to read without one byte amiss. It is open to all and doesn't distinguish prince from pauper.

He doesn't have to resort to blaming the press for any misquote because he is answerable to himself for whatever he does, unlike the hundreds of old-world half-baked specimens we have seen who continue to haughtily walk around like emperors and napoleons, creating the very feudalism that makes a mockery of the institution we once remembered as the home of the spirit of the alliance.

What alliance is it today, can you say without twitching the eyebrow?

If the blogger turned MP is educated, multilingual, and trained in business and technology, you can believe again in what parliament should be, in fact what elections are supposed to deliver - concern and commitment towards citizens argued intelligently and supported with probing analyses and comments.

We looked high and low, from old floor to very expensive ceiling, in the parliament house, for such representatives of the rakyat. We found none. We only heard cackle of geese, hisses of reptiles, laughter of hyenas.

Jalan Duta is indeed far from Ulu Ampang where resides the old faithful, that now-dilapidated national zoo. But the inhabitants of the latter are markedly better behaved than those of the former. The hansard records it so.

We need more brains in parliament, more brains in each state, more critical and tactical probes to prick conscience and yield transparency. We need more people who will be asking direct, forthright and relevant questions and who will fearlessly say enough is enough.

Today we look around but cannot find even one independent media to do just these simple things. The rakyat who pay taxes are denied effective channels to ask hard questions and demand clear and complete answers before the man hen crows.

From courts to camps, there is a fog thicker than the impending borneo smog. It has made dense the heads of men.

Enough is enough.

Democracy is not about electing someone because he will make sure your road will be tarred in the rural area to perfect condition when you and him know it will be used much less than those pot-holed roads in the cities used by thousands of urban folks who will be paying for your rural roads.

Democracy is not about coming out with a manifesto which says what you will be doing when those things are what you already should have done.

And the reasons why they have not been done are simple- those who were mandated to do so after the last elections have been too busy backscratching, closing-one-eyes, under-the-tabling, moonshining with contracts and licenses.

Why should people fight so vigorously to the extent of wanting to resign enmasse over which list of nominations to submit unless they fear a realignment of power after the election? And why should they fear a realignment of power unless they don't want to lose it? And what have they done with all the power they have had before? Moved mountains?

That you can read this and feel something about it and think hard about it shows that blogging is one way to prick the old conscience and keep it from dying.

Mother Malaysia is completely quiet. She has suffered heavens-know how long all these happenings that have scraped the skin off her, dried her bowels, emptied her gifts to us.

It can all be changed to something better. It can happen anywhere again.

Why not old Jelutong for a start?

How often have we heard about those who speak and then later deny their own words or simply say they have been misquoted? When one writes something into a webpage and post it he has to mean exactly what he says, for the whole world reads it. It takes conviction and courage to do so. Put that against the convictions of those who doubt the sincerity of others without putting their own words into print. Then look at the difference.

Jeff,
I refer to the picture with you in the foreground and the campaign billboard in the background.
What I am about to say many not be pleasant. In addition, I realize that you were probably not personally involved in it's creative process.
What bothers me is the order of preference of langauges displayed. I would have thought that the order of prominence would be Bahasa, English, Chinese and the Tamil.
If DAP wants to attract more support from the other communities, it has to lead in simple things like these.
If we continue to use old school methods, when will we ever transcend race?

JEFF OOI says: Thanks. I will share your views with the Publicity Department of the party. I am aware the incumbent government had used a one-language version that is not Bahasa Malaysia.

best of luck jeff :)

Jeff,

I wish you success; many of us does too. May the force be with you !

Guess what! I receive a forwarded mail, showing a few I.C number with age over 100 year-old, and still show in the SPR server!! these information can be used for their own benefits!! check it out: http://drprince.blogspot.com, you tell me then, aren't they manipulative....

Jeff,
Reuters featured you, Tony Pua & Badrul Hisham as the “Bloggers testing their popularity in the Elections” and NTV7 had a campaign trail report on your quest in Jelutong. And they have given you only 17 sec of speech quoting you
“Now what they told me is that they want somebody to lead Penang, to provide the brain work behind the Government in Penang and for that they welcome me”
plus some other visuals on you. Watch the video clip (3.03 mins) with a rebuttal from Koh asking you to visit the Penang factories before criticizing them. The report was also based on a 75% negative poll survey that “cyber space campaigning will not make a difference” More details at

If you have additional video visuals of what you said and your walk abouts, I can re upload the clip to give a more balance presentation in Utube.

watch tony pua in this video with lim kit siang in the end ... inspiring!

Hi Jeff,
This has been something that did not sit quite right with me too for long. DAP uses Chinese as the prominent language in more places. If it has to shake the image of being a 'Chinese' party to become a Bangsa Malaysia party it is important the party considers this issue.

Jelutong has turn from a decent place to better from time to time. Its strategic location which can be accessed from 3 main roads is unbeatable.

Yes, progress is there under 2 term of Gerakan ruling BUT it's way too slow. I believe if proper management were there, Jelutong can be as good as Sunway as well.

As much as i miss Jelutong, as deep as I love that place. I hope for PROPER development, I pray for ULTIMATE security and I wish for a MP that able to PRESENT rakyat's needs to the Parliment.

Even though i'm short of 400 days to vote, but I really do miss the entertaining scenario over Jelutong in this 2 weeks. The BN normal routine is (Say DAP canot do work, Say we will take care of the road and drain, Last but not least, they sing with out of tunez voice and even worst lyrics) coz they really got nth to say. Although some ADUN and MP deserve a credit over the last term performance but overall, if they are given chance, why not give our dear Mr. Jeff a chance to prove to be a better option.
