My worthy opponent in Jelutong... ( 2 )

Finally, Koh Tsu Koon, the worthy opponent that I couldn't face-off with in Jelutong, has started to attack me as JEFF 4 MALAYSIA campaign enters the third day.

I held a press conference this morning to rebut him and to blow his covers.

KTK_1999-Lies1.jpg KTK_1999-Lies2.jpg
'Give us 10 years and Penang shall rival Singapore'... Tsu Koon claimed in Guang Ming Daily June 23, 1999, five months before the 'Reformasi' General Election

Incidentally, PKR Penang held another press conference at the same time at a different place, giving more expose to the Chief Minister who has helmed Penang for 18 years, running it to the ground.

Here's an entry on the issue by NST-Business Times:

ELECTION 2008: Ooi stands by his claim despite Koh's rebut
By : Marina Emmanuel

GEORGE TOWN:

Controversial blogger Jeff Ooi, who was described by Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon on Tuesday as "irresponsible" and "ignorant" for saying that Penang has lost its dynamism and competitiveness, is standing by his claim.

The DAP candidate for the Jelutong parliamentary seat today said he is not going to respond to Koh by name-calling but would continue to engage Koh with facts and figures to back his statements, especially when it concerned the electrical and electronics industry in Penang.

"Penang needs to get into indigenous manufacturing and not sweatshop assembly test and manufacturing operations. The State's economic model should be one which is anchored by knowledge workers but if factories keep relocating and moving out of Penang into Kedah and China, we will end up with abandoned factories," he told a press conference at the DAP headquarters at Jalan Talipon.

Ooi said his claims that technology giant Intel Corporation was reducing its workforce in Penang and redeploying them to other locations were based on information from industrialists.

Ooi also quoted a Jan 14 Business Times report stating that once the new Intel facility in Kulim is up and running, Intel likely to deploy some of its Penang employees to Kedah and may also relocate its chipset manufacturing activities from the island to the Kulim High Tech Park where the company's facilities are located.

"When I said that Penang ranked fifth in 2007 in terms of approved manufacturing projects by state," Ooi noted, "I was quoting statistics obtained from the Malaysian Industrial Development Authority's website and did not make up these figures. I am providing statistics provided by the same Government he has served for the past 18 years."

Ooi reminded Koh of a vernacular news report on 23 June 1999 where the Chief Minister has appealed to Penangites to give the Barisan Nasional a 10 year mandate so Penang can rival Singapore.

"He has one more year left to deliver but going by the reported S48,900 gross domestic product per capita figures, I can tell you that this figure is nowhere close to what the people of Jelutong are earning now," he said.

While waiting for the vernacular Press to come up with the story, Malaysiakini Chinese edition was first to have it uploaded on the web. Print, and spread it around, folks.

I hope someone could could help translate it into English as I don't have the time.

Jelutong... Rocky writes in MyPaper

Via MyPaper:

MyPaper_080227b.jpg
‘A BLOGGER HAS GOT TO DO WHAT HE HAS TO DO’ AHIRUDIN ATTAN

BLOGGER Jeff Ooi, 52, may be contesting in his first general election, but he’s far more well-known than more seasoned politicians.

MyPaper_080227.jpgIn fact, the opposition Democratic Action Party candidate and former business intelligence analyst is expected to win the Jelutong seat in Penang comfortably on March 8 and make Malaysian history as the first blogger to become an MP.

my paper spoke to Mr Ooi in Penang yesterday after the launch of his first book, i-Witness, to raise funds for his campaign.

Hi Jeff, 10 days to go to the polls. Any regrets?

No regrets. A man, I mean a blogger, has got to do what he has to do.

You quit Gerakan to join the DAP last year. What made you?

I despise Barisan Nasional’s (BN) race-based politics. Gerakan, a multiracial political party, is endorsing BN’s race-based ideology. I quit as I can’t agree with this. True enough, Gerakan is fielding no non-Chinese candidates in the election.

And the DAP has no problem with that?

No problem, The leadership courted me when I was still with Gerakan.

You are a Kedah native contesting in Penang. Should that be an issue?

Not an issue now, As Chia Kwang Chye, Lee Kah Chun and Teng Hock Nam are (also not) born in Penang. No double standards please.

What is Jelutong like – the people, the issues?

It’s an ageing constituency as only 15.7 per cent of the people are below 35 years old. Jelutong has been punished by BN while it was in opposition hands. It needs to catch up with development and better quality of life. Bread and butter issues reign high. There are strong ill feelings against inequitable distribution of national wealth. Now that the cost of living has gone up, unhappiness is fermenting.

Jelutong strongman and DAP chairman Karpal Singh paved the way for you to contest in Jelutong. What’s the party’s strategy?

Checks and balances to BN. People feel cheated for voting in BN with a 91 per cent majority in 2004.

How do you see yourself stepping into Karpal's shoes?

I am a blogger who speaks good Malay, can bring up people’s agenda in the Parliament that BN candidates can’t and dare not.

If you get into Parliament, what will you be fighting for?

Say no to race-based politics. Legislate to ban race-based political parties.

Will you promote blogging? Will you have time to blog?

I will blog live in the parliament (if elected).

What if you lose the election?

Go back to blogging, and shout outside the Parliament.

I disagree with one point. It's inaccurate, and it could be fatal for Rocky to say that this blogger is "expected to win the Jelutong seat in Penang comfortably on March 8".

I am facing a formidable giant with the 3M -- Money, Machinery and Media -- and my chances may be defeated at the 11th hour. Let's not count the egg before it's hatched.

I am still campaigning very hard.

My worthy opponent in Jelutong

My opponent has started to attack me and question the validity of bloggers in general.

Jelutong_Jeff_080226.jpgOn Page A14 of Guang Ming Daily (Feb 27, evening edition), my opponent whipped all bloggers in a broad sweep by stating that "bloggers hide behind computers and live in a virtual world".

He said "people could only imagine but could never feel the sincerity (of bloggers) beyond the computer".

Maybank2U and Paypal are both financial services in the virtual world where people connect to transact funds through the computer.

With Maybank2U and Paypal, I managed to raise RM85,000.00 in 11 days.

Real world Malaysians have donated generously to the JEFF 4 MALAYSIA cause as they could feel my presence from around the world.

Is my worthy opponent plain naive or he wanted Maybank2U and Paypal to shut down?

It's my neck that I stick out for the sake of Malaysia, right here in Jelutong.

Walk With Us

Rocky's Bru, Bernard Khoo and Tony Yew drove all the way from KL to attend my book launch in Penang, and drove back immediately soon after. They brought along some election donations (Haris was arm-twisted), and a full car load of brotherly love.

Launch_Pg_080226.jpg

Launch2_Pg_080226.jpg

I am speechless. But very grateful. I shall cherish this.

RM85K... and here comes Crazy Guy II

UPDATES... As at 01:46hr...

Donations received from Screenshots readers:
1 ) Maybank2U: RM68,424.29
2 ) PayPal: US$5,345.91 net after handling fee (roughly RM17,106.90).

With the latest tally of about RM85,500.00 in total, that's about 85.5% of the target for this online campaign, i.e. to raise RM100,000 from readers of this blog. Thank you very much.

CRAZY GUY STRIKES AGAIN!

Meanwhile, that crazy guy who pledged to make another contribution of RM10,000 towards the JEFF 4 MALAYSIA election campaign if the contributions from Screenshots readers hit the 70k mark, has made another RM10,000 via a cash deposit today!

10K_Cheque_020826.jpg

The captured amount in the bank and Paypal now reaches about RM85,500.00, or about 85.5% of the target of the fund raising amount.

Don't forget, that crazy guy also said he will make another contribution of additional RM10k, when the contributions from Screenshots readers hit 100k -- because 'we want to give not just 100 percent, but 110 percent'.

Today, that crazy guy wrote to me again after he sent me the JPG of the bank-in slip:

Jeff

See that 70k will not be a problem since the amount has already hit 64k. Here is the bank in slip for 10k as agreed, just banked in. Will do likewise at 100k.

CRAZY GUY II

Meanwhile, here comes Crazy Guy II.

When I was about to speak at a ceramah in Pulau Tikus Tuesday night, a party worker handed me cheque written on United Overseas Bank (UOB). Apparently it was issued in my name from an anonymous person. The amount is RM10,000.00

The same man has called me immediately after I had finished my ceramah in the Tanjung constituency on Monday night. He engaged me in a sharp-tongued conversation, poking me on why he should giving away RM10k of his life saving to my campaign fund. He asked me if voting in the Opposition cou;d really make a difference.

I must say I was equally sharp-tongued, telling him that after reaching the RM50K threshold -- which barely covers the expenses for the basic needs in an election campaign for a Parliamentart seat with three state constituencies with over 60,000 voters -- I would rather have more people getting involved in my cause than receiving plain money.

I explained to him patiently: I will get RM100K by having 100 people donating RM1K each, or 200 people with each donating RM500. To get more people involved in the meaning of a general election, I would prefer to have 100,000 people donating RM1 each. I will get the same RM100K, but I would have gotten 100,000 sharing my cause actively -- to dismantle the Umno-dominated race-based politics in Malaysia.

Anyway, but the time the Crazy Man II's cheque is cleared, I would have achieved RM95,000.00, or 95.5% of my original target of getting RM100k from Screenshots readers.

I have started to re-donate some of the money I collected to fellow candidates who need fund -- so that more Rockets could be launched into the Parliament and the Penang State Assembly -- and I think I should save some to set up a service centre in Jelutong, win or lose.

DAP has touch rock bottom in the last three general elections, state-wise. Win or lose, I think It's time to rebuild the grassroot strength to get prepared for 2013.

Please continue donating, as Crazy Man 1 had said. Give me your 110% support. No amount is too small to make a difference.

Click here to see how you could donate, volunteer and get involved in JEFF 4 MALAYSIA campaign.

Thank you all, again.

Jeff

Transaction record for 10k deposited just at the ATM machine Maybank, PJ.

As I said in my sms to you, I will make another contribution towards your campaign of 10k when the contributions from readers of your blog hit's 70k, as an incentive to both you and your readers (who are thinking of contributing but have not done so).

Furthermore, I will make another contribution of another 10k, when the contributions from readers hit 100k, because we want to give not just 100 percent, but 110 percent.

I wish to remain anonymous. However please let me know via your blog, mail or sms once the two targets I mentioned above are achieved.

Regards

I mean the greater crazy guy is one who was so foolish to think of a campaign slogan so fragile and vulnerable that the table can be turned completely upside down.

It fits and it rhymes

In advertising, this strategy is called 'repositioning the enemy'.

Stolen Maxis

My main handphone has been stolen. The Maxis line 012-2956356 is now off until 5pm today. I am getting a replacement SIM card after lunch.

Nomination Day

Tomorrow, Feb 24, is Nomination Day for GE2008.

Eligible voters in the country will get a parade of candidates offering themselves to contest for 222 seats in the Parliament, and several hundreds for seats in the respective state assemblies.

My fate lies in the hands of voters in Jelutong, Penang. The Nomination centre is at Penang Free School.

To me, and to many others I believe, it's time for change. This is our theme song, Berubah.

The English version is here, and the Mandarin version is here.

Multi-racial by constitution

By constitution, both DAP and Gerakan are multi-racial parties. Going by the announced candidate list, DAP will field four Indian candidates for the Penang state constituencies (three lawyers and an academic), Gerakan none.

In GE2008, with Koh Tsu Koon at the helm, Gerakan is contesting 12 Parliament and 31 state seats. All 43 candidates are Chinese Malaysians.

In contrast, DAP is fielding a record high of 30 lndian Malaysians -- 10 for Parliament and 20 for state seats.

Perhaps, with Umno dominance, both DAP and Gerakan can't get Malay candidates standing on their tickets.

Oh yes, after Nomination Day and the media shall blackout on non-BN parties? We will see.

JOM UBAH!

You really made me cry...

UPDATED VERSION. UPDATES... As at 01.10hr...

Donations received from Screenshots readers:
1 ) Maybank2U: RM30,273.27
2 ) PayPal: US$2,845.19 net after handling fee.

With the latest tally, that's about 40% of the target for this online campaign, i.e. to raise RM100,000 from readers of this blog. Thank you very much.

Meanwhile, private donations from my personal contacts in the corporate sector, friends, professional circles had been very encouraging. Even my former boss donated. However, all these people are so humble that they donate generously but prefer to remain anonymous.

I would like you to know that the donors from Screenshots readers and my private contacts, they include people from all races. There is no insignificant number of my Malay brothers and sisters who showed qualms over my identity in DAP. They must have seen me from the light of JEFF 4 MALAYSIA.

On the other hand, I am indebted to several professional people, who are ardent Screenshots readers from Penang, are putting down their tools to help me run the Operation Centre.

So motivating... for Malaysia

Over the days since I started the online fund-raising drive on Feb 16, I was graced with several motivating letters and SMSes. I would like to share three of them:

FROM A 60 YEAR OLD MALAYSIAN:

I am a 60 year old KL businessman who is very fed up with the present extremely pro-Malay Government (the BN Chinese so-called "partners" are merely lap dogs). Both my sons are studying in NY and Melbourne on their father's scholarship , meaning my money. I hope you will win in the election and it is young and brilliant people like you WHO CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE !

So, here goes - I am willing to immediately make a cash donation of at least RM3,000 to help you to defray your mounting campaign expenses. I do not have to meet you. All you have to do is just tell me which bank account no. I have to bank the money to. I hope this sum will help you buy sufficient posters, etc for your campaign.

Best of luck to your campaign. I await your e-mail reply.

(Name withheld by Jeff Ooi)

(I and my wife have voted consistently for DAP in PJ Utara)

TWO KIDS TO FEED, HUSBAND JOBLESS

Dear Jeff,

I have deposited RM1,000 into your Maybank account via ATM on 18 Feb 2008 at 9.25pm. The image of the transaction slip is attached as Attach File.

I wish I could contribute more. However, I am just a teacher and have 2 kids to feed. Moreover, my husband has been jobless for nearly a year.

I have also sent email to most of my contacts this afternoon asking them to make contribution. I attached verbatim the content of the email I sent, as below.

I will approach a few more friends via phone call and SMS. Hopefully I will be able to persuade them to contribute.

This much I could do for your fund raising.

Wishing you the very best.

regards, (Name withheld by Jeff Ooi)

US$2, SANDWICHES AND JUICES
Dear Jeff Ooi,

Greetings from a fellow Malaysian studying in Australia, homesick, family-sick, friend-sick, desperately-need-help-Penang-food-sick, and above all, too young to vote, just a few days too young. Not keen on the idea of postal ballots anyway.

I have just made a token contribution of USD2 to your Paypal account. I’m sorry but I have no income and surviving on little more than sandwiches and juice (almost daily!). Unless you have an e-book version of your book, please don’t send it to me. I would prefer you to spend the postage money on your campaign. Book selling is what bookshops are for, a political campaign is another thing.

Perhaps this election (and the next few years of course) can help me decide whether to keep my Malaysian citizenship. I’m having trouble deciding if getting harassed by the occasional racist teenager in Australia is actually better for my health than going home for anything longer than a vacation.

I bid you good luck in the coming elections. Save Malaysia.

In the meantime, I’ll just introduce congkak to some of my friends here. At least there is something Malaysian worth singing about: our diverse culture.

Go get’em tiger. Thank you.

Sincerely,
(Name withheld by Jeff Ooi

There are several more motivating messages that really could make me cry. There are many more caring MALAYSIANS 4 MALAYSIA than I had ever thought. This is good for the country.

On the ground level, we need volunteers -- details here.

Endorse Jeff Ooi

The foreign Press, especially those in Singapore, is interested in the new phenomenon in Malaysia -- bloggers running for Parliament, online fund-raising ala Barack Obama, and e-Campaign.

Thus far, Reuters, TODAY, New Paper and Channel News Asia have interviewed me on the same topic.

Even Singapore blogs are plugging for us (see The Wayang Party)

Home Ground

At home in Penang, the obnoxious super 5xMom (chanlilian.net) is helping this blogger to recruit local campaign volunteers. Thanks Lilian!

Today (Feb 23, Saturday) at 11.00am, the PEOPLES’ DECLARATION will be launched at the Blog House in Bukit Damansara in Kuala Lumpur. The six political parties who have endorsed the declaration will be invited to attend together with civil society movements, NGOs, and members of the blogging community. I was told that JEFF 4 MALAYSIA will be endorsed. Thanks folks.

I was also told that elections watch group Malaysian for Free and Fair Elections (Mafrel) has included Jelutong, the constituency where I stand, under surveillance. I gladly welcome that as I have placed my campaign team to be on the look out for unfair election tactics by the opponent parties, including the Election Commission.

On February 29, Aliran Secretary Dr. Francis Loh, who is also the Professor of Politics in USM, will speak on the topic: 2008 election: Issues, Process, Context . The forum starts at 8.00pm at the IC Church, Pulau Tikus.

to folks in the Klang Valley, I hope you give your solid help to my comrades running in the Greater PJ area, with Tony Pua at the helm.

Please visit DAP FOR PJ at dapforpj.org.

dapforpj.jpg

The Edge business weekly will feature both Tony and I in this the coming week's edition.

Last but not least, folks in USJ-Subang Jaya, and the electronic community that I started in 1999, had been generous in helping me to raise funds for the JEFF 4 MALAYSIA campaign too! I believe they now understand why I had chosen a Penang seat as the launchpad to change.

Really appreciate it, folks!

Calling for volunteers

This is torturing. I have not been online for over 24 hours!

Meanwhile, the JEFF 4 MALAYSIA campaign has shifted gear and the Ops Centre is ready. We are not renting any office lot, but found a spacious compound in the midst of Jelutong common folks. It's located along Jalan Jelutong in front of the service centre maintained by former Penang state exco, Khoo Khay Por.

We have a fair bit of volunteers, but we need more. If you are available to help, please contact our Campaign Directors:
1 ) Mr Theng Tel: 016-4173108
2 ) Mr Tan Tel: 012-4309615

Please SMS the two, stating your name, IC number & voting area. Non-Jelutong Malaysians are also welcome.

MORE... I will be back online around midnight to update on the donations. Ciao!

February 21, 2008

Jelutong

This is my first Internet login in over 36 hours.

DAP has announced my candidacy for Jelutong parliamentary seat. So The Star report was right.

If Koh Tsu Koon comes here, then reports in the vernacular newspapers will be correct as well.

UPDATES: Now, the core campaign team and ops centre are in place. We will be giving refresher course to the campaign volunteers soon. We need about 200. Those can volunteer to help, irrespective of experience, please bounce me an email at jeff001 @ jeffooi.com. Thanks.

More.

Oon Yeoh: 'Give you a better sense of the man you might be voting for'

I have the honour of having Oon Yeoh [ Read: Do we have free and fair elections? ] -- my mental sparring partner in blogs, technology, Internet and New Media -- write the foreword for my book, i-Witness, scheduled to be released on Nomination Day, February 24. Excerpts:

Jeff is a man with very strong views. I don't necessarily agree with him on many things. But I take my hat off to him for the copious amount of research he puts into any topic that he's blogging about. Disagree with his conclusions if you will, but you can't accuse him of not doing his homework. His commitment to double-checking his facts is prodigious.

That he's now running for a parliamentary seat – and is a viable candidate – is testament to the potential of New Media. In light of his political persona, it's sometimes easy to forget that Jeff is also a keen technology watcher.

Whenever I meet up with him for a teh tarik session, only half the time is spent talking about politics. The other half is devoted to ICT.

Now that Jeff's decided to run for public office, it's very timely that he puts together this compilation of his i-Witness columns, originally published in Malaysian Business magazine. It's always interesting looking back at a columnist's past articles, to see how right or wrong he was about a particular issue.

In a way, these articles will give you a better sense of the man you might be voting for.

Tomorrow, I will tell you to whom I dedicate my book, i-Witness'.

By the way, the little button you see on the top right-hand corner of this page is courtesy Malaysiakini.

The online news portal has decided to feature the 'GET A BLOGGER INTO PARLIAMENT' donation drive free-of-charge.

As at 13.10hr...

Donations received:
1 ) Maybank2U: RM18,968.01
2 ) PayPal: US$1,804.37 net after handling fee.

With the latest tally, that's about 25% of the target for this online campaign, i.e. to raise RM100,000 from readers of this blog.

Election Commission allows a maximum expenditure of RM200,000, for Parliament seat. I am targetting to raise 50% from donors at large, you readers, and the other 50% from internal resources and personal contacts.

The money will go into running the operations centre and polling machinery, printing and disseminating of election collaterals (including candidates' flyers and pamphlets running by tens of thousands), campaign ceramahs and feeding the army little troop of volunteers who will take leave, drop all tools, to help me.

To all who donate -- no amount is too small, a little few hundreds from here and there will do the job -- I will reciprocate your support each with an autographed copy of my book: i-Witness.

Cover_200x.jpgIt's a compilation of my articles from 2002 to 2007 about Knowledge-based Economy, and about how to transform Penang's economic model in the context of K-economy.

RUNNING AGAINST KOH TSU KOON?

The Star said I will be standing for the Jelutung parliament seat while the vernacular press in Penang say Chief Minister Koh Tsu Koon will also stand in the same constituency.

If both reports are true, I will, again, be the David versus the Goliath.

After weeks of rigorous groundwork, I find myself very vulnerable facing this General Election. The BN machinery, with $$$ to throw, is immensely formidable.

If you could help me raise some campaign funds, and do it superfast, please email me at jeff001 @ jeffooi.com. Or drop me an SMS at my exclusive data line: +6012-2944907.

One for All and All for One

A group of would-be donors from Screenshots readers asked me what if I could raise more fund than my target amount of RM100,000.

Good thoughts, though I am still tracking at 15% achievement as at the last tally.

It's my objective to help Opposition bring up the numbers in winning seats. I thought should there be excess funds in my kitty, I will channel them to fellow candidates, especially those who are first-timers.

In the House, just so few of us...

We are out-numbered! Looking at the YouTube video here, the cause is noble, but the voice feeble. There are just so few who can speak up, or willing to speak up for Malaysia.

As at 12.55hr...

Donations received:
1 ) Maybank2U: RM12,541.00
2 ) PayPal: US$1,307.56 net after handling fee.

It's amazing to see Malaysians, who stay in the country but have been earning PayPal credits through their online activities, are transferring their Greenbacks to Jeff 4 Malaysia! (I will figure out later how to mobilise the money as PayPal doesn't repatriate money into any Malaysian banks!

BACKGROUNDER

There are 7 Parliament seats allocated to DAP and four are incumbents, three yet-to-win seats are Jelutung, Bukit Bendera and Batu Kawan -- all retained by Gerakan during GE2004 -- and I have been proposed to run in one of them.

The fact is, there is practically no safe seat for the Opposition in Penang. What more, Bukit Bendera is the 1-Parliament-4-state seat and a star-studded BN stronghold now represented by the deputy Minister of Information, the Penang Chief Minister, the senior State Exco and the deputy Speaker of the State Assembly, plus a one-term state assemblyman.

But the call of national duty is definitely prompting me. I need to do what I wanted to do in JEFF 4 MALAYSIA campaign, and I have made some details here, to explain the mission. The state Election Manifesto, which I helped draft, will be release at the right time. I am certain that talk is cheap and beyond being a blogger, I need a legislator role to speak up for Malaysians!

After Nomination Day

Oriental Daily News, which has yet to get its printing and publication licenses renewed, has 'voluntarily' adopted this editorial policy:

After February 24 (Nomination Day), the news weightage for the caretaker Government and the Opposition will be 65% vs 35%.

Nanyang Siang Pau is to follow suit.

Reinventing (再转变)?

UPDATED VERSION. Little Birds told me that Koh Tsu Koon will adopt 'Reinventing Penang' (再转变) for his election slogan as he leaves the state to become a federal minister.

Reinventing Penang? Well, let's see if Tsu Koon could offer anything new in leading Penang after 18 years of his chief ministership of the state.

But I am vindicated by a report in The NST-Business Times yesterday that Intel Penang will have massive "reduction of workforce" soon and the benefactor will be Kedah!

In late January, I had alerted Penang folks that Intel Penang is moving out its production lines and massive workforce reduction will happen soon. Gerakan attacked me for making the statement.

And a Star business journalist endorsed what I had said, and what the NST had reported.

I had reminded the Press about the issue again this morning. We need to know the next 5-year plan in reinventing Penang's high-tech industry.

SOS: Jeff 4 Malaysia Campaign Fund

Talk is cheap. I always reminded myself in and outside this blog.

I am glad that, this General Election, I am able to participate in an opportunity to see the transformation of Penang and entrusted by the party to help draft the Election Manisfesto for the state. I promise we will take a non-communal approach in providing the thought leadership.

I have some details here, on why I need to do what I wanted to do in JEFF 4 MALAYSIA campaign. I need a base to speak up for Malaysians!

Meanwhile, I also find myself very vulnerable facing this General Election. The BN machinery, with $$$ to throw, is immensely formidable.

Secret recipe

Now that the Parliament is dissolved and general election is on, folks in Penang are prescribing a strict menu that I have to adhere to.

No sushi. No eggs. Have more coconut stuff.

To Penang Hokkien, sushi (su si) means 'to lose completely' (输死); eggs (jia nui) mean 'zero' (吃鸡蛋).

Have more coconut, 'pao yia' (包椰), means 'guaranteed to win' (包赢).

Cakap tak serupa bikin

February 5, Screenshots hinted that the Parliament might be dissolved on February 13.

A senior editor disagreed. Today, I am proven right. The Parliament was indeed dissolved precisely my Little Birds had predicted.

And today also aptly proved that that bugger is a liar, and double-faced in less than 24 hours apart.

This afternoon:

theSun & the Toyo Deal

Semuanya OK at theSun?

Nexus among politicians, businessmen and journalists tends to paint a grim picture under the Abdullah Administration. Signs are showing strongly that there won't be any more Khir Toyo whacking or expose on the local governments in Selangor in the free paper.

(Yes, you may be asking if the award-winning Citizen Nades-Terence Fernandez investigative reporting team will be disbanded.)

Things don't look good on the so-called last bastion of free press in Malaysia if a recent meeting of the theSun's owners and the paper's senior editors is taken as a premonition of happenings to come.

The guest who showed up at the Chinese New Year eve meeting, involving stakeholders of theSun, was Selangor menteri besar Khir Toyo, and he hadn't come for yee sang or frolicking.

Robin Tan, the authoritative representative of theSun's owners, made it very clear in Khir Toyo's presence that, from now on, there would not be any more criticism on Khir Toyo's governance.

Exposes of scandals implicating bad governance in local governments in Selangor, notably Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya (MBPJ), Majlis Perbandaran Ampanmg Jaya (MPAJ) and Majlis Perbandaran Subang Jaya (MPSJ), shall also stop.

Representing the newsroom were acting editor-in-chief Chong Cheng Hai and the newly re-designated consultant editor Zainon Ahmad.

Journalists criticised

Little Birds who confirmed the source story told Screenshots that Citizen Nades and Terence Fernandes, who were both summoned to the meeting, were severely criticised for their expose on Khir Toyo and his Little Napoleons.

A deal has been struck between theSun's management and Khir Toyo on their future mode of engagement, the Little Birds said. Screenshots has been requested to withhold the details for the time-being.

However, it was not known if theSun's investigative journalists will quit.

On the other hand, Little Birds told Screenshots that The Star may not move in to own theSun if the Politicians-Businessmen Nexus gets more intensely complicated.

Penang Diaspora

Penang is one state, that we could possibly show, that could thrive without following the New Economic Policy (NEP) that Umno wanted to perpetuate.

I am hoping that we can do something to rally the 'Who Is Who' among former Penangites now residing in Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, England, the USA -- and all around the world -- to come back here to help regain the past glory of the Pearl of Orient that Abdullah and Koh Tsu Koon combined couldn't.

Penang Diaspora. We will expound on this in weeks to come.

Decisive indecision

Yesterday, at 3:40pm, Star SMS News Alert carried this:

PM Abdullah Ahmad Badawi says he will decide if Dr Koh Tsu Koon cannot make up his mind to stay on as Penang CM or move to a federal post.

Within the hour and with Damage Control mode engaged, the Chief Minister that Penang endured for the last 18 years finally showed his card, announcing that he will move on to be a Cabinet minister, if elected as a Member of Parliament.

That ends months of speculation of whether Penang will at last get a new Chief Minister, with new ideas, after 18 long years. But will there an avalanche effect in Penang that Tsu Koon predicted?

Your per capita income up 40%, now at RM22,345?

5:37pm, February 9. I immediately connected with Tony Pua, DAP Sec-Gen's Economic Advisor, moments after the Star SMS Alert reached me.

Bank Negara
's rogue forex speculator, now Second Finance Minister, Nor Mohamed Yakcop was quoted as saying in Penang that Malaysia's per capita income rose by 40% in 2007 compared with 2004.

He said that per capita income was now RM22,345 compared with RM15,819 previously.

In other words, Nor Mohamed was implying that Malaysians from all walks of life are better off now than four years ago, when Abdullah took over from Mahathir.

Tony has this response:

Nor Mohamed Yakcop must either be completely out of his mind, or can no longer perform simple Mathematics or worse, attempting to insult the intelligence of ordinary Malaysians.

Malaysia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 5.0%, 5.9% and an estimated 6.0% in 2005, 2006 and 2007 respectively according to the Government's official statistics. (Source available here)

Based on the above growth rates over the past 3 years, Malaysia's GDP grew by approximately 17.9% from 2004 to 2007.

Income or GDP per capita is calculated by dividing the GDP with the total population. Therefore, it is completely inconceivable that our per capita income increased by 40% when our GDP grew by only 17.9%. Unless of course, the honourable Minister believes that our population shrunk by some 16%!

To achieve 40% growth, Malaysia must be growing in excess of 12% per annum. Hence, to grow by 40% over 3 years, with a population growing at just under 2% per annum, that will actually make Malaysia the fastest growing economy in Asia, outstripping even China and India.

The Second Finance Minister should refrain from getting intoxicated by the general election fever, in the attempts to paint a heavenly picture of the Malaysian economy. He must instead make an official public apology for his outrageous claims.

When Mr Maidin leaves, Nor Mohamed can claim the seat at MoI, quota or no quota.

A Godsend who works bloody hard

Day 2, Year of Rats...

"It is God's will that I become the Prime Minister of Malaysia and I am very conscious that I have to serve the people although I personally do not benefit even one sen because of this." [...]

"Some of you can say that I'm not good, you can say whatever. But don't say that I don't work."

"I work very hard. I really mean it and you know it.''

Hard at work or hardly at work? It's a Star report that dropped on Tok Mommy's cradle.

Hot dates

A highly-placed media friend disagrees with the Screenshots source story (from two hills) that anticipated the Parliament to be dissolved Feb 13, with Polling Day falling on March 1, a Saturday.

But he does agree that Abdullah Badawi will fly to Africa to hand-over the OIC chairmanship in Dakar, Senegal, circa March 8 to 14 -- that's after the general election, and in his capacity as your second-term Prime Minister with fresh mandate.

The Little Bird expects Parliament to be dissolved immediately after Chap Goh Mei (the 15th day of Lunar New Year), and Polling Day will be on the following Saturday, March 8.

Poll_Utusan_080208.jpg
Note that Koh Tsu Koon of Gerakan is squeezed out in the main picture.

Today, Utusan Malaysia speculates that the Parliament will be dissolved in two weeks' time, and that Polling Day will be between March 8 and March 15, the latest.

'Trust us with your votes!', that seems to the be the message from your trusted leaders during the CNY gatherings...

Da Jiu Online

Last night, over reunion dinner in Penang, we did a video-conferencing with my Da Jiu in Chaozhou city, Guangdung. Technology shrinks the world as we overcome the geographical distance to exchange New Year greetings free of charge.

CNY_Dajiu.jpg

This is the second year in a roll we had video-link with Da Jiu's family during Chun Jie. The only difference is that our equipments got more sophisticated while China's data connection quality far exceeded ours.

Da Jiu says he saw the rare snow in Hua Nan (South China), less than a score in a hundred years.

Last week, I used a KL-Penang video link-up to hold an off-site press conference. This Saturday, the Chaozhou City TV crew will visit my family in Penang to do another Chun Jie video link-up for TV broadcast in China.

Using technology to the max... Right now, a team is helping me set up a GPS-based application to track profiles of my constituency. Thanks to Garmin, Google Earth, Nokia N95, Mobile Broadband, and a plain notebook with a database, efficiency in resource use is greatly enhanced. Trails can now be plotted to focussed on grey areas that need additional attention.

And thanks to the U.S. Department of Defense for turning off the SA (Selective Availability) in May 2000. The accuracy of civilian GPS receivers is now significantly improved.

The neo-speak is this: Maps are so old-school.

天下沒有穷戊子,

'Uncle, follow me to Parliament'

"Uncle, I invite you to follow me to Parliament on Feb 16, 2008. If you follow me, the children and I will be safe and the people of Malaysia will understand the meaning of human rights better."

That'a the little message from five-year-old W Vwaishhnnavi, who issued a challenge of sorts to Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) chairperson Abu Talib Othman.

Little-Girl.gif

Vwaishhnnavi is the daughter of Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) chairperson P Waythamoorthy.

On Feb 16, little children want to meet the Prime Minister to present him with roses, with lots of anticipation.
