The same Najib 2 years down the road:
Where's the RM4.4b fuel subsidy 'saved' for public transport trust fund?

Two years ago, we asked DPM Najib Razak to watch his back for what he said on record. Here's a blast of the past from the Screenshots archive, March 12, 2006:

SUNDAY STAR, March 12, 2006

Twenty-two months down the road, on January 14, 2008, the same Najib said: "A comprehensive and integrated plan will be drawn up by the Government to solve Kuala Lumpur’s traffic woes."

For that purpose, the “Empowering the Public Transportation System-Traffic System in Kuala Lumpur Hotspots” retreat was organised for certain people in Serdang yesterday, and that the Government would consider suggestions made during the retreat before drawing up the plan.

Najib, who also chairs the Cabinet committee on Public Transportation, said this included expanding LRT services, improving the quality of commuter trains and increasing the number of buses and their stops.

He said a holistic solution was needed to solve traffic problems in the city for the next two to three decades.

That's God-speed for you, KL folks.

I am not surprised. When is the last time that Najib, or the PM, or any minister actually used public transport (apart from publicity-generating photo-ops)?

Say, Jeff - here are some ideas for your election manifesto:

(1) Directly-elected city councils.

(2) A truly independent Anti-Corruption Agency answerable only to Parliament.

(3) An independent Judicial Commission to handle all matters pertaining to the judiciary, including selection, appointment and promotion of magistrates, judicial commissioners and judges.

(4) Gradual elimination of all subsidies and the introduction of targetted assistance to the poorest Malaysians of all races.

(5) Guaranteed freedom of worship, including unfettered rights for all religions to build their houses of worship.

(6) The establishment of a Department of Overseas Malaysians Affairs to actively engage the Malaysian diaspora living and working in other countries.

(7) The establishment of an independent Police Commission.

I bet KL and all Malaysia city traffic will be congested for the next 30 years. Even with RM44 billions budget!!! (well, if you include the inflation)
Who dare to bet with me? Just RM0.20, cheap bet ;)

To the contrast, if I am appointed in the position to fix the bloody traffic problem in KL, I just need 1/10 (one tenth) of the cost stated by BN, RM440 millions, and can fix it within 6 month. And to add more salt to it, the system can even self sustain and make 5%-10% profit in the long run.

Miracle? Cheap talk? No, unless you really think it throughly!
Hint : just think how Airasia can run through the mess up company in the early day, he don't even have RM50 millions on hand.

two to three decades?! Surely he's joking, right? right?!

Yes! Not surprisingly, Malaysians are a very forgetful lot. I'm glad we have Jeff's blog and alike to recall, remind and expose to everyone of empty promises, denials incompetence, mismanagement and more lies. And people still want to vote for them?. Dear RAKYAT!..THINK again for the sake of the future and the future generation who're going to inherit this land.

Is there anyway one can publicly discuss suggestions on improvements in the transport system and submit them to the government? I'm very keen to contribute.

Off course he is joking Azharif.
Talk s cheap. Dont think he knows the acute traffic congestion in the Klang Valley. He is always chaffeured around.

With cheap credit available coupled with inefficient city transportation system, the number of vehicles are increasing at an alarming rate. Our roads, even with improvements and expansion are unable to accomodate the large numbers in the next 5 years what more in a decade!

I think the keyword here is WILL.

"A comprehensive and integrated plan WILL be drawn up by the Government to solve Kuala Lumpur’s traffic woes."

This is so that he will have something to talk about when the NEXT general election comes.

Sheesh... Will he be our next sleeping prime minister?

There is one solution the government can implement at a faster pace which will improve the situation dramatically - move the government departments and ancillary agencies to Putrajaya - and force the move of ALL the embassies there too at long last!

Najib may well not be aware of the extent of the problem personally - he's living in traffic jam free Putrajaya. Putrajaya was built in part to alleviate the traffic problem in KL by shifting the centre of government-agency traffic. Why has this slowed down?

I have a suggestion which not only cost no money but in fact will make money & save resources. Just instruct all traffic policemen not to interfere with the traffic light (let the light rule) & just stationed themselve nearby the traffic lights to issue summons to all who are caught in the yellow box & break other traffic rules. I swear traffic jam will be reduced by at least 50%, travelling time for motorists will be reduced, overtime motorists will also behave & who know, may even become well mannered not forget the revenue from the summons issued.

Dear A M Ubaidah S,

You suggestion does not make any sense, moving the government department to Putrajaya is akin to pushing a problem from point A to Point B. It is just a temporary solution that doesn't work.

What we need are better transportation, our LRT system is a joke, where in a world does a city has 5 different system? Transit means to hop onto another train/line without tagging off, I would assume that each crony wanted to supply their own system.

Jeff is right, talk is cheap. time for najib to walk the talk. where is the proposed LRT system to Subang and puchong that he promised years ago?

They were restructuring the public transport companies to the bumis, and the last one on the list was the monorail. Scomi now got the monorail from some Chinese business fellas. All plans can set to go.

KL's public transportation went downhill when they abolished the minibuses and privately owned bus companies in favour of intrakota, parkmay and metrobus.

needless to say, all these new entities, except for metrobus lost money and had to be bailed out by the govenrment.
Reality is that most modern cities are designed for cars and not commuters. Compare los angelos to enw york and you will understand. New york was built before cars were invented, and hence is more compact.LA on the other hand, grew when cars are easily available, and the town planners turned it into a vast metropolis whereby a car is needed to get around.
Same with KL. Old KL is compact. Newer parts of klang valley were designed for commuting by cars.

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
