Minister of Health
The portfolio of Minister of Health is traditionally reserved for MCA.
However, past records show whoever that occupies the seat will come to the end of the road in politics.
Ng Cheng Kiat (1990), Lee Kim Sai (1995) and Chua Jui Meng (2004) are indisputable examples who are still alive. Whereas, Dr Ng Kam Poh (1969), Lee Siok Yew (1978), Chin Hon Ngian (1986), Mak Hon kam (1987) and Chan Siang Sun (1989) were older testimonies of similar fate, cast in stone.
Only Chong Hon Nyan managed to break the chain in 1984, when he retired as a short-stint Transport Minister after serving as the Minister of Health.
Let's see if Chua Soi Lek can break the curse this time.
Comments
It don't really matter who becomes the MOH cos the health service also traditionally gets from bad to worse each time a new minister takes over.
Take a look at most GHs, they cater mainly to foreigners, simply because there are no policies to give priority and privileges to taxpaying Malaysians. Many foreigners take advantage of our health care system, so much so that the doctors also "treat" us Malaysians the same way as they "treat" the foreign workers. Malaysians are "forced" to go to private hospitals, as they "feel" they do stand a better chance of survival. But private hospitals and clinics, for the same matter, take advantage of MOH's complacency to charge exorbitant fees and rampantly and shamelessly impose a "show money first before treatment" policy. The preferred "customers" for these private hospitals are those who have fat insurance policies whereby they really put their scalping tools to good use.

In EU, whoever in the health minister position are happy face. As long as you keep improve the services, senior citizen has no quarrel with you. And younger citizen will learn importances of universal health care when they start working. Abolish it the health care system, the whole society will revolt!
All health minister in Malaysia are lucky because Malaysian are yet walk to the street. All 4 things in life : born, growth, sickness, dead are directly and indirectly deal with the country health system. And yet, it keep deteriorate every day.
IMHO, MoH should be the most powerful department. But well.... in Bolehland..

toyolbuster: I do not agree. The public hospitals are flooded with foreigners because simply the Malaysian do not appreciate our almost free health system. The Malaysian public hospitals employed the 20% of medical specialists or doctors to serve the 80% of the public. Doctors and medical staff do not treat patient with their political view, they treat all thier patients (Malaysian and foreigners) as human being. The public hospitals also do not practice the policy of 'money first treatment later'. We do our job without putting the payment as an issue. Although our MOH minister may be a politician bur I can assured that all the medical staff are doing their job without politics in their mind. The only big mistake the MOH / Malaysian gov did is to allow the mushrooming of the private hospitals.

I think foreign workers do have their right and they came here to search for better livelihood.
They, indirectly contribute the country economy.
I am grateful that MOH accepted them just like other Malaysian. My only hope is that the fees should be lower, MOH is the only place where they can seek their treatment.

There were three independent studies on a national healthcare subsidy scheme; voluminous works they were, chokeful of figures. Gathering dust in KL, last recalled, some eleven years back, probably completely forgotten by the very people who had commissioned them.
Because of our enviable economic acrobatics, it is therefore an additional wonder that our mortality rate isn't any higher because we have to wait six months for a govt specialist to examine us because his waiting list is a mile long.
Medicine is so expensive that even self-medication, a factor emphasized in those reports, is becoming an inflationary exercise.
Soon we may reach that equally sublime situation for citizens malaysia:
if sick and poor, please die.
This as a small reminder to those who'll be again spinning before NY to shore up those sleepy hollows called bourses...

*sigh* many rises and falls of prominent ppl were caused by videos.
Hopefully, this Chua Soi Lek case will not be related to some video issues.

Even the normally reliable Neil seems to have missed the whole point of Jeff's reason of the minister's imminent demise. Aisehman is quick to the subtlety

Hi! Brothers & Sisters!, Please do a research on Fluoroquinolones antibiotics, or rather a Google/Yahoo search! You will find that this group of antibiotics is discontinued or withdrawn from the world market, specifically the US, Europe and the developed nations.
Why is it that our KKM rules and regulations are not matured enough or is it because Malaysia is a developing country akin like China perhaps? As a consequence it's open to a lot of abuse of authority and widespread corruption? Please enlighten us, ok?

The Fluoroquinolone Drugs are the most toxic and dangerous antibiotic in clinical practice today - "We cannot even begin to count the number of lives these drugs have destroyed rather then saved in the past forty years..." http://fqresearch.org/rip_1.htm

Mybaru: I think it is not appopriate for you just to dig up a controversial issue from internet and trying to interfere the professional usage guideline in medical care on usage of a particular antibiotic.
Fluoroquinolones antibiotics do have a place in management of infection. The usage is only by preofessional who is trained to do so. Unless you can argue with the usage with scientific discussion, you do not just dig out some website and trying to dispute the usage by our professional.
Like hormone replacement therapy, it is a big controversial issue in mdicine. The WHO even got working party declare it as carcinogenic agent but is it true? Many other organization also dispute their findings.
Anyway this is not a forum to discuss medical maangement / treatment. Do not try to mix you political opinion on our medical staff management. Leave this to the professional who are trained to do so.

Some of the site quoted like http://www.fluoroquinolones.org/ do not even have the contact detail. Please be careful on these sites and the usage of its information. Many people who do not agree with western medicine have constant effort to discredit the western medicine and try to discredit the reputable organization like FDA. The professional who use drug will always avoid overdosage and complication. These drugs are usually hospital based and used on very ill patients when the benefit outweight the risk.

Jeff,
The cat is out of the bag. Dr Chua has finally admitted it in a Press Conference in Labis that he is the one in the sex DVDs with a “personal friend”. Wife is standing by him and he apologized profusely to one and all including the PM & DPM. It must have been the saddest day of his life for someone who has reached the pinnacle of his life and to drop from so high. For more details and glimpses of the Video Clip Extracts (1 .24min)

Jeff was cheeky with the posting but I was not too COCKSURE what he was on about. Now after reading Dr Chua's confession it will be known in infamy that this year 2008 will start with a BANG as far as the next senstionalised news is concerned.
We now have our very own politician to rival Bill Clinton, albeit for the wrong reason.
I felt for Dr Chua's family and children as his moment of folly would caused him a lifetime of regret and perhaps his political future.
Let us not go into gutter politic as this are private activities between consenting adults and we have no business intruding into their private lives to be a Mat Skodeng, a Voyeur or a Peeping Tom. These are descipable actions by desperate people.
Anyway Jeff you created the news scoop and created a really artistic posting to highlight us to the news.
