Lame-ass Press

This is what Anwar Ibrahim said on record yesterday, via Malaysiakini.tv:

The Bar Council has jumped, probably fuming mad. But how is the Shock-A-Lingam Tape being presented in the mainstream press? Is the country's editor-in-chief a phone call away?

The English Press:

  1. The Star (in a story by Shahanaaz Habib and Shaila Koshy okaaaay?) can't name names.

Instead, it became well schooled in nouns and adjectives like "a prominent lawyer", a "very senior judge", "a number of prominent judges", "a prominent businessman and a politician, both of whom were close to the then Prime Minister".

A totally different treatment from Razak Baginda before he was officially charged.

  2. theSun, which is substantially-owned by Vincent Tan, does not run runs a 5-para story stuffed at the bottom corner of Page 4, as evident in its e-paper edition.

Also no names named, just "a lawyer" and "a senior judge"

  3. The NST carries nothing related on its online version (please alert Screenshots if you saw it in print version).

UPDATES: There is a 10-para on NST Online now (12:25hr, Thursday). No names named. Nouns and adjectives used are "a senior lawyer", "a top member of the judiciary", "a former DAP stalwart", "a tycoon", "a minister" and "several senior judicial officials".

The Chinese Press:

  1. Oriental Daily News blacks out the story on its pages, but runs the story online.
  2. Sin Chew Daily runs a 6-para on Page 08.
  3. Nanyang Siang Pau runs an 11-para online. It's on Page A3.
  4. Penang-based Kwong Wah runs an 8-para, aping what The Star made do with adjectives and nouns: " 某律师 ", " 一名巫裔内阁部长及华裔企业家 ".
  5. The China Press runs a 12-para deep in Page 04. Online version carries an additional photo.
  6. Guang Ming Daily is more forthcoming with a 16-para, 3 subheads and 2 photos, one linking to the YouTube.

The Malay Press:

  1. Utusan Malaysia, directly owned by Umno, runs a black-out.
  2. Berita Harian, indirectly owned by Umno, is not seen as carrying it on its online portal. (Please alert Screenshots if you saw the print version.)

The Правда (Pravda):

  • National News Agency Bernama also runs a blackout on its public portal but reminds people that postage for Hari Raya card is 30 sen.

We never had a freer press in Malaysia! A summary:
1 ) English papers: The Star is the only candle in the dark.
2 ) Malay papers: See no evil, print no evil?
3 ) Chinese papers: Courageous in their own ways but Oriental Daily News.... let me see.

UPDATES: Foreign Press coverage:

How about S'pore's Straits Times or BBC and CNN....that's our source nowadays?

This is 'PRIVATE & CONFIDENTIAL'! Ha! Ha! Ha!

The press in this country is only good for churning out government propaganda. Being the government mouthpiece, news like this will never see daylight, the risk is too high and the editors have no courage to run the story.

It is confirmed, Malaysian newspaper is unreliable, unfair and unjust to it's reader.

For the Sun, it's in page 4, column 5.

Yup. Barely 200 words. But it's there.

what next..? will the morally corrupt "prominent judges" resign? Will there be a Royal Commission to get to bottom of the matter.

I sit and wait.

TheSun is cautious and would not bite the hand that feed them. Last time when a judgment was made against V.K. Lingam in his suit against a European newspaper, theSun too did not breathe a word. To protect not only V.K. Lingam but even his friend Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed?
And what happened 7 years ago when the “closed proximity” holiday photos surfaced, DAP leader raised a substantive motion in parliament and a Rais Yaim (then a newbie Minister) said “"Such socializing is not in keeping with the proper behavior of a judicial personality, and this has been intimated to [the chief justice] in no uncertain terms."
Eusoff Chin "adamantly denied" to the panel any improper behavior on his part. And Dr Mahathir replied "those behind the attempts were hoping that judges would become disillusioned, leading them into making unfavourable rulings against the government"

and pic of the “Spy Car” in front of Anwar’s office.

Back in March 2001, were there not also some very interesting photos about a "prominent lawyer" holidaying in NZ with a "senior judge" with some link to a case involving a "high-profile corporate figure"?

I wonder what Googling for "The Bowman Papers" will turn up...

The Sun went to town with the expose on the Port Klang Free Zone fiasco. Remember the front-page reports, the screaming headlines?

Now, that another scandal has seemingly popped up, the The Sun is strangely reticent.

No doubt, there must have heated discussions in the paper's editorial offices!

Local press can't afford legal suits, especially from judges; however that hasn't prevented some of them from suing individuals.

Dsai should uncork more; if he has any to share on vote-buying and tender awards, that would be swell.

A few more knock-out blows before elections and things might just get a wee bit more interesting. A zakaria here, a muhammad2 there, a firdaus over there, keep it up.

Meanwhile, back to bourne.

As for the Judiciary, its integrity is now under subjudice; the court in this case are the Rakyat of Malaysia; add a few foreign judges looking on.

Never in the field of nation-building has so much damage been wrought by so few on so many.

if there's one thing we can all be proud of here, as malaysians, it would be witnessing our people of diverse backgrounds and cultures working together to achieve a common goal.

we have proven that Malaysia Boleh! under any circumstances.

therefore, there is hope.

This is just another example of how sick our present govt under BN is.

It makes us all wonder how low can they go before the whole country collapses...

Any good news in malaysia, you can read it in thpore newspapers the local press. bad news, you get it from singapore newspapers.
good news regarding singapore, you read it in singapore newspapers. bad news, nobody anywhere gets to read about it except on the internet.

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
