Negaraku-ku: Damage control mode... GAG ORDER on Press

UPDATED VERSION. MCA vice president Dr Chua Soi Lek has "concurred with the wishes of various parties" that Wee Meng Chee should be subject to legal actions, Utusan Malaysia said in a newsflash this evening. Quote:

The Internal Security Ministry, of which Abdullah Badawi is the minister, has directed the mainstream media to stop publishing reports related to the NameWee ‘Negarakuku’ controversy.

This was confirmed by the ministry’s Publications Control and Al-Quran Texts Unit senior officer Che Din Yusof, said Malaysiakini.

However, Che Din said the media can still report on comments made by Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his deputy Najib Abdul Razak on the issue.

Che Din justified the ministry’s move in issuing the directive on the grounds that the issue can raise tensions in the country. Quote:

“(If we keep talking about it) it will raise tensions, do you know that?

“You as an emotional layman can say anything, If I wasn’t a civil servant, I can say anything too. It’s too polemic already in the newspapers,” he said.

According to him, political leaders, NGOs and Wee himself can no longer have their statements published in the newspapers.

As for the exception given to the prime minister and his deputy, Che Din said the statements made by these leaders are aimed at "fixing the situation".

Meanwhile, Malaysiakini Chinese Edition reported that Che Din's directive was issued orally.

Similar gag on Najib's Islamic State

For the record, the last time the Internal Security Ministry issued the same gag order on the Press was in July, where all mainstream print media were asked not to publish any news on the issue of Malaysia being an Islamic state.

The same Che Din Yusof had told malaysiakini that newspapers could only publish statements from Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his deputy Najib Abdul Razak on the country being an Islamic state.

all so sensitive, media just report on sporting news and foreign news la. Better what, gag everything from plundering s to corruption. That will suit the govt just nice.

Sell the newspapers at just rm0.20 per copy lo.

The whole country panic when Meng Chee sings. Nice.

Maybe it's a good thing too? Attention then is shifted to more important issues at hand.

Personally, I think Wee has been given too much media coverage for what is a very personal rant and even a juvenile outburst. Making it a 'controversy' or 'issue' is turning this whole debacle into 'us' vs 'them' situation. Nobody needs more conflict than what already exists in society today.

Of course, this doesn't justify media a blackout.

The longer BN drag the case, the worst it will become.

The gag order is no other than "stop the people discover the RM4.6 billions price tag".

Yes, I am not kidding. The songs cost us RM4.6Billions, with a 4% interest per annum!

Folks

I had said sometime back the actions of this UMNO-led Govt are actions of a FASCIST GOVT.

UMNO has made our country, not an Islamic state, which is still not too bad, but rather into a FASCIST STATE.

This UMNO-led Govt is now turning into a FASCIST GOVT.

Now what are the characteristics of FASCISM?

Read here: http://www.rense.com/general37/char.htm

If you go through the list below, it is clear this UMNO led Govt has made by stealth, our country into a Fascist State run by fascist policies of UMNO:

Fourteen Defining
Characteristics Of Fascism

By

Dr. Lawrence Britt

Dr. Lawrence Britt has examined the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin American regimes.

Britt found 14 defining characteristics common to each:

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread
domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.

6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.

9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.

11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.

12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

Hello Jeff,

Any way to track an IP address? I caught a cyberthug planting a ’seditious’ comment on my blog here:
http://ghostline.wordpress.com/2007/08/22/look-what-the-cat-dragged-in/

originating from IP: 60.53.48.146

I’ve hung him/her/it out to dry, but considering that mine is a relatively new and obscure blog, this is a clear sign that the cyberthugs have been unleashed.

All civil society bloggers out there, stay alert.

JEFF OOI says: Yes, I have been alerted by a journalist about the hate-messages left in several blogs, out inflame readers' sentiments. I will write a blog entry about this and provide some advisory. The cyber-troopers are using a 1999 tactic to fight a 2007 war in cyberspace. Meantime, moderate your comments section and disable the realtime publishing function. It may sound regressive but it's a least tedious way to banish this so-called cyber-trooper tactic to the black hole of Calcutta.

Folks

If you look at the 14 defining characteristics of fascism, ONLY 2 of the 14 are not obvious for Malaysia ie No: 4 and 5.

That is 12 of athe 14 characteristics defining FASCISM apply to this UMNO-led Govt. Ie Malaysia is now 85% a FASCIST STATE run by a Fascist Govt.

DPM Najib saying that Malaysia is now an Islamic State is a diversion from the hidden truth about the state of our country.

UMNO has turned democratic nation into a de facto Fascist State.

This fact must be made known to all in the coming General Election and to vote out the Fascist UMNO party including their co-sympathesiser component parties in the BN.

Malaysians must take back the country from these fascist bent leaders.

As this goes on, the only thing real in the paper will be the TOTO numbers.

The Malay papers, Utusan and Berita, not that I read them, but from everything else that I read appear to me to operate with a seized mentality. It would appear that they have allocated for themselves the task of "protecting" the Malay race. Of course they also got to ensure that ketuanan Melayu not be forgotten.

Thus demonising the Negaraku-ku composer and singer is convenient to their tasks. Oh, how so thankful the Malays are to these papers who are always on the look out for the "rotten" chinese whose only purpose in life is to denegrade the Malay and Islam!!! Right?

It was a non-issue to begin with with no one bothering, but when other issues that could have embarrassed or put the Prime minister on the spot surfaced one after the other, Badawi must have been so thankful to Wee Meng Chee for providing this relief.

I guess for the powers that be anything that could embarass or put the PM on the spot conveniently also means it applies to the entire Malay race. Sadly a majority of the Malays here only rely on these [ DELETED ] Malay newspapers for their daily news input. These papers have only one thing in common. To nurture and sustain a prejudice against non-Malays and non-Muslims.

Najib making statements aimed at "fixing the situation" would be nice. I only hope he remembers that should he have thoughts of repeating his "keris tained with the blood of Chinese" threats (which he reported uttered some years ago in the stadium in Kg Baru area).

Such sage advise in the interest of not raising racial tension would also be good to heed should less-level headed folks start waving weapons about or start shouting offensive "you can leave" comments too no?

As the No 1 and No 2 political leaders of the nation, the onus is on them to crack the whip to guard against threats to muhibbah in the tanah air. And like charity, one should begin at home.

For the sake of credibility, moral high ground and KERANAMU MALAYSIA!

Ghostline,

So if they, and Telekom Malaysia. co-operate, it should be possible to trace it all the way to the actual phone line or wireless modem which was used to access the Net to post that ’seditious’ comment.

Dear Jeff,

Thanks, I had my moderation defences up, which was how I caught the rat. Would appreciate your advisory on tracking down these vermin.

P.S. the people of Calcutta don't deserve these vermin. Banish them instead to the Bermuda Triangle, which is now the designated dumping ground for cyberthugs. =)

thanks leithaisor.

let me collect a few more rats in the trap before i take the lot down for toxic disposal.
