Negaraku(ku)... Buy Original?
UPDATED VERSION. The Star News Alert dispatched at 13:59hr today stated that the Government will not accept student Wee Meng Chee's apology for his Negaraku rap video clip on YouTube. The law will take its course, says de facto law minister Nazri Aziz.
Dunno whose face kena a big tight slap this time? But the Cabinet rap on Namewee's rap had made nformation Minister Zainuddin Maidin the most benign minister among all. On August 14, ZAM said the society must accept the apology by Wee.
Jialat! Wgich is which?
ORIGINAL POST
“西北够力”. You want an apology and you get an apology.
Those who had dealt with NameWee's Negaraku-ku should deal with the author of a YouTube version of Mamula Moon (Terang Bulan?) by the same standard.
Audience discretion is required if you CHOSE to view the clip. The last frame of the YouTube could be offensive to some.
The clip has attracted over 30,000 viewings so far. It will be great if someone could extradite the YouTube owner, Google or whoever, to be tried in Malaysia for insulting our national anthem and sovereignty.
Strip his/her citizenship if found a Malaysian.
11th hour national anthem
INCIDENTALLY, retired broadcaster Ahmad Othman Merican emerged in The Star today to talk about how he had helped the Tunku create the Negaraku from a love song, the Terang Bulan, on the eve of independence.
According to Ahmad Merican, the Tunku had insisted that the melody Terang Bulan be “anthem-ised”. He wanted the anthem to be nothing short of the grandeur of God Save The Queen.
Ahmad Merican, however, mentioned nothing about Mamula Moon.
Comments
Assuming Mamula Moon is the original version, do we (as a Nation) pay copyright royalties (assuming still in force but I doubt it) to the author everytime we play this song?

Have they killed off MT? Its inaccessible now. If they did its downright infringement on our freedom of free speech.

Mahathir has been crying foul claiming that western nation's Intellectual Property movements have taken advantage of our brains and refuse to give them back.
http://kadirjasin.blogspot.com/2007/08/c.html
Well, if a nation's National Anthem was itself improvised from a Western song without given due mention of the original singer/composer, what else can we say about this nation's appreciation of brains?
Globalization on the other hand has been labeled as a Jews conspiracy. Thanks to it, it took me more than 30 years to finally realize the song i've been singing every friday at school is infact a Mamula Moon!
We should get Mamula Moons on a CreativeCommons license to safeguard our a** from being sued for violating copyrights!

西北够力! = 4896! (see peh kau lat) Had look up the Mandarin tools to find the meaning... but then I needed the Hokkien dictionary as well. LOL

To LC Teh,
I will try my best to translate the See-Peh-Kau-Lat(4896)
See Peh : somebody
kau lat : powerful/strong/abusive
It is an expression. Here is example of typical usage : "His speech 4896","He screw people 4896".
In here, it is a dual.

I am glad to see the government is not accepting his apology.
I already lost 90% of my respect for him when he offered an apology, to have it be accepted, thereby earning some concession, would erode the rest. He should stand his ground.
There is nothing to apologise for. If some people are so insecure that their faith in Malaysia is shaken by hearing some disaffected no-talent student rap for three minutes, then those people should be apologising to Malaysia, not demanding anything from the rapper.
Nothing has undermined the anthem more in my eyes than hearing how weak some people seem to think its symbolic value is. A truly strong symbol is not harmed every time some kid somewhere pokes fun at it.

Hi All,
In fact, this song (english & spanish/?) is still being sung by ex sailors cum band, whom learned this song while in asia during the korean & vietnamese wars.
Im not sure if 'terang bulan' was a copy of the original version.
They were last spotted in South America in 1998.
cheers

I remembered once there was a smart guy said something like "imagine youtube was created by Malaysian"
If YouTube was created by Malaysian then where whould this guy be now? HAHAHAHA
May God Bless Malaysia Government able to put YouTube,Google to Malaysia jail as soon as possible, as YouTube violated our government law.

It is owned by Google. Probably Google can do a reverse 'takeover' and buy over our whole weak economy.

"So which song is Negaraku adapted from? Is it Mamula Moon, or that folk song Sultan Abdullah heard in the Seychelles?", quoted from Wikipedia.
Ladies & gentlemen, this, in a nutshell, confirms our cabinet's ambiguity about everything. For pete's sake, get a life, man, Nazri.

I also have a few bars of a hokkien version of the Negaraku, which we sang when we were schoolkids having a laff.
Would you die for the Malaysia flag, and for what it stands for? Err, what DOES the flag stand for? Pray tell, Nazri.

"I already lost 90% of my respect for him when he offered an apology, to have it be accepted, thereby earning some concession, would erode the rest. He should stand his ground."
Utterly absurd. Utter ignorance.
Nobody in their right mind would make such comments. Do you have any idea what kinda pressure the poor soul has gone through?
Put yourself in his shoes. Being far away from home, and your family's safety is threatened, what would you do?
still insist that you will stand on your ground? oh come on...!
Alas, Namewee doesn't need, and doesn't care about your respects. He just wanna be a composer instead of drawing unwanted political attentioins.

You're right. It is insensitive of him to do that.
I'm not sure what kind of the law & punishment on this situation. Do our parliament which is voted in by us draft laws pertaining this sort of matter?
I guess he has apologized being young and immature. And if sincere I accept his apology. If not, what are the laws to punish him?
I don't want to be hypocrites or double standard on this. In Malaysia, we do have protestors in the street flag burning another nation flag such as America, Israel etc. It's ok for Malaysian to criticize another country and burn their flag, but not ok for Malaysian to criticize their own. And we want to jail our own citizen. This is like hypocrisy and make this country looks like a Dictatorship.
I read in the Star today, it looks like the cabinet didn't accept the apology. I guess the criticism, is very true and real biting and that's the problem. It challenges the cabinet and what not to use their might on some poor frustrated young boy. What a bully. Come on, be sensible about it. There're more important matter like how to keep inflation rate low, boost market, jobs and eradicated poverty. Solved the high accident rate in Malaysia and not merely paying lip service to train bus driver to be like aircraft pilot. I'm not sure it is meant as a joke. The next time, bus driver train like spaceship pilot. The enforcement officers is not doing their job properly, the governtment is not doing their job properly and never serves the Rakyat interest properly and FAM not doing anything to make our football ferver nation proud again.
And here they are...trying to bully a poor confuse insentive boy who feel like an outcast in his country. Be magnamious, forgive, all God teach forgiveness, be it Allah, Jesus, Buddha, etc. Forgive.
Songs, Flags etc reflect the spirit of the nation. And from what I see, we have problem on this and worsening by each day. We must regain back those spirits and make the flag and song really matter and have meaning. We must guide the younger generation and free them from the shackles of the older generation myopic view. We must transcend, be educated, be empowered and be confident in our life and from here on together, lead by example from the bigotry, racial, fear, insecurity that has been constantly use as shackles and now want to be used by the "Cabinet" on this person. Guide him to the path by example, and not shackled him. We hope in time, he probably sing a different tune of Negaraku, one where we all proud of.
