Uncle Yap has certainly made a good point :)

Obviously we have been too obsessed with emphasizing our differences all this while, too busy fighting to achieve supremacy which is merely imaginary. All these simply show how insecure we are as Malaysians; a home-grown epidemic, a self-inflicted dilemma that no amount of kongsiRayas or National Service will be able to cure.

Our forefathers, some of them in struggling to make ends meet, while the other being too preoccupied with satisfying their egos, have to some extent failed our nation. It's now up to the present generations (Jeff's and my generation included) to mend the relationships and to rid the future generation, if not our generations, of the feeling of insecurity.

For my part, being working overseas at the moment, the least I can do is to engage anyone regardless of his/her race, creed or place of birth in whatever activities and whenever possible. And this is precisely what I have been striving to do.

To Jeff, I am sure, together with other right-minded politicians, bloggers and social activists, you will do good for Malaysia. The actions of all of you reminded me of the quote by Martin Luther King Jr.:

"Man's inhumanity to man is not only perpetrated by the vitriolic actions of those who are bad. It is also perpetrated by the vitiating inaction of those who are good."

I've always thought that we achieved Independence in 1957, and our birthday was 1944. Works well for me ;)

But I guess the main issue is that, from what I learned from discussions with East Malaysians, somehow they don't feel that integrated with Malaysians. Like the article said, they have to pay more for this and that. There's also the resentment that a lot of money from natural resources from, say Sabah goes to the development of Peninsular Malaysia, particularly KL. If I were a Sabahan (like my relatives there), I'd also be wondering why some main roads in Sabah are so bumpy and not well-maintained.

I also want to share a story with you, related to me by a Sabahan friend, working and living in Sabah as a civil servant.

Second story about Nunukan. Maybe that's also why lah.

I'm a Sarawakian. And I agree with Uncle Yap that Malaysia is indeed 50.

But tell me why do we need to feel associated with the Federation? What have they done for us? The Bakun Hydroelectric Dam doesn't count by the way...

Sarawak is the largest state in Malaysia, and yet some West Malaysians still think that Kota Kinabalu and Sarawak is one and the same place!

That's just adding insult to injury after most of our Petroleum money has gone to building the Twin Towers (one for Sarawak, one for Sabah).

Many Sarawakians felt (and still feel) that we would have been better off not joining the Federation. Just look at how well Singapore is doing - and without natural resources of their own!

could someone confirm whether malaysia was formed by 4 equal status countries namely malaya, singapore, sarawak and sabah.

note: singapore could be considered a state of malaya because of its close historical link with malaya during the british rule.

although under the same british government, sabah and sarawak are different colonies or rather different countries under the british rule.

if any country want to join malaysia now, surely, they have to observe aug31 as independent day.

but if malaysia is to form a new country now under the name of bolehland with one more country for e.g bosnia tomorrow then the celebration date would be changed aug24.

but if bosnia were to apply to join malaysia...there again, they would have to observe aug31 as the big day.

so the question is whether they have begged to join or appllied to join.

uncle yap might have touched on this in his story but my apology, i sincerely missed it... cheers!
