Rice price up

According to Oriental Daily News, Padiberas Nasional Berhad (BERNAS) has officially notified wholesalers of price increase affecting all types of rice, with effect from July 1.

The margin of price increase ranges from 5 to 8%. This is expected to translate into an increase of between 50 sen to RM2 at the retail outlets.

This is the second time the rice price has increased. The last round was in April.

Glutinous rice has the highest price hike margin, from RM2.60 per kilo to RM2.80 per kilo.

The wholesale price of glutinous rice has been spiralling from RM1.85 per kilo early this year, to RM2.50 in February, and onward to RM2.60 in April.

With the latest increase in wholesale price, glutinous rice is expected to be retailed around RM3.20 per kilo.

On the other hand, wholesale price for Vietnamese rice has been increased from RM1.44 per kilo to RMRM1.55. Whereas, Thai rice has gone up to RM1.60 per kilo from RM1.49 in February and RM1.53 in April, respectively.

At the same time, scented rice has gone up from RM2.35 per kilo to RM2.45.

Locally-produced rice is not spared though it is a controlled item and most expensive than most types of imported rice. Wholesale price now ranges from RM1.55 per kilo in Kedah and Perlis to RM1.85 in Johor. It's RM1.75 per kilo for other states.

Alternatives?

There is a 7-word maxim for housewives who read Chinese wisdom. They have to raise the family by guarding a balanced account in the seven essentials in daily life: Fuel, rice, oil, salt, beverages, sauces and vinegar.

Samy Vellu says it you can't afford paying tolls, go use the regular trunk road.

Now, if your family can't afford eating rice... alternative?

UPDATES: Oriental Daily also reported on Page A2 that the import price of dried chili and groundnuts has increased between 25 to 50%.

Import price of dried chili has gone up from RM5.50 per kilo in March to RM7.50 in July. Whereas, import price of dried groundnuts has increased from RM3.00 top RM3.20 per kilo in March to between RM4.20 and RM4.50.

Eat grass lor...

Eat LG Chocolate lor, like what kennysia did. :-P

Anyways, people spend fortune every month on mobile phone (which I never own one as I do not see it as a need at all)
Just cut down talking time or use Skype.

I can smell petrol prices rising soon...

In the mean time, go for a carbo diet... and hmmm.. get ready to buy bicycles too.

I think cost of rice only increase by a small fraction. What really bugs me is traders use this as an opportunity to scam consumers like us, causing a chain effect in rise of cost of living. We should exercise our rights as consumer to boycott stalls that raise prices indicriminately.

On the rise of cost of fuel, I did thought about changing to use motorbikes too but I don't want to be another road statistics, so I'll probably change to a smaller car. The Perodua Viva looks promising.

i just simply don't get it, if america can produce rice at cheaper than us then there must be something wrong with our farmers.

Even with the 3.45 exchange rate, our rice should be 3 times cheaper than the US rice but the fact is it is not that way. why?

Something is seriously wrong, i can understand why thailand and vietnam rice are cheaper probably due to their cheap and hardworking farmers.

maybe we should just eat multi-vtamins for one meal instead of rice instead.

It may not be true. Sources said of oil price may go up to USD90 within 3 months time.

Whatever salary increase for govt servants is negated when they are robbed again with price increase. Left in, right out.

And it always goes back to the same pocket where the rich and connected gets richer. Fact of life here.

usd is weakening and there should be some savings there. But instead prices are going up. why? prices of rice in Thailand is much lower and you get better rice for the price we pay?/

The price thing will continue to spiral upwards every year at a rate much faster than our purchasing power. I just dread to see bolehland depleted of its black gold. Then we can't even pay everyone to buy their sack of rice. The time is T-year away so wise-up and plan ahead.

the65thsquare,
I could be erroneous, but she did convert the central court garden of her castle into a skating ring during summer using precious salt while her French country men starved. It is just one of the many events that led to her guillotined. Your cliché would just about express the general feeling of Malaysian now. They offer cakes when we asked for basic rice and decent livings.

What I had in mind was that the ruling class is not always aware of what the common folk want or need.

History does have a funny way of repeating itself, especially to those who do not learn from it.

1+1=?

Thai rice controls 25% of world market. Despite this, the Thai farmers, mostly in the north east, are poor like shit.
Why? kelvin Fernandez asked - i just simply don't get it, if america can produce rice at cheaper than us then there must be something wrong with our farmers.

That is because Americans and the EU are dumping their subsidised surplus commodities into the world market causing third world farmers to live in subsistence while their well off farmers are live in luxury at the expense of their tax payers.

Expect farm prices to increase soon if the WTO on agricultural produce is agreed upon and subsidise agricultural products are banned from international trade.
Also commodity reports on rice all predicts higher prices for rice exports, whether from Thailand or vietnam.

second reason for price increase is due to Bernas being the sole importer of rice in the country. This monopoly, created during the time of TDM should be abolished. Now you know why rice(and diesel) is a major smuggling item in the northern states and profit from these activities may be financing the seperatist movement in southern thailand.
