First they came... for us Malaysians!

You must have read my July 25 post, "First They Came..." and probably 3540 Jalan Sudin's response in Oriental Daily News.

And I assume you have also read Sunday Star (July 29).

Star_070729.jpg

Friends are helping me organise a Press Conference tomorrow to let me make a stand for thinking Malaysians.

If you are in town, please come.

DATE: July 31, 2007
TIME: 10:30am
PLACE: Food Foundry, Jalan 17/13 Petaling Jaya (Selatan)
CONTACT: Tony Pua (012.2220086)

It's a decent cafe on the ground floor of high rise apartments near the Shell petrol station where University students go for their photostats. I think wifi is available for you to blog and podcast/phone-cast from there. Here is the location map.

I know it's a working day. If you can't make it, please forward the message to your friends.

I always tell my readers in this blog: "Talk is cheap." You need to identify yourself and stick the neck out to make this great country, greater.

Heard this from Beverly Sills? "You may be disappointed if you fail. But you are doomed if you don''t try." It's a quote that motivates me. I hope it does you.

Hello Jeff..

Too bad I'm out in the boondocks. Would've love to come. All the best and Good Luck!

for better tomorrow! Congrat Jeff.

Jeff,

I'll be there for you and for us Malaysians!

Cheers.

I applaud and support your very brave move.

I hope you can galvanize mmore Malaysians into giving more thought and action into making this rotting government more accountable for its actions, by whatever means!

Congratulations Mr Jeff. I hope Malaysians will be able to have you represent them in the Dewan Rakyat. We need someone like you to voice out our concerns and our problems. Someone like you to wake up those sleeping MPs, including the YAB.

Mr Jeff, could I ask if you could kindly translate the Oriental Daily's piece, pls. As my nick suggests, I am a Malay Malaysian (or Malaysian Malay?) and most Malays cannot read, write or speak Mandarin.

Thank you and God Bless.
p.s. If you are running in the GE at my constituency, my vote and the votes of my family members will go to you.

Congratulation. God Speed to your endeavour. Take care...lots of tough bridges ahead to cross.

This decision may alienate certain quarters from your cause, but you already know that.

Congrats jeff, and I sincerely wish you all the best. But I think you get a more 'receptive' audience being an "independent" blogger. Be careful of your back, ALWAYS.!
GOOD LUCK

Now I think many people want to know how Jeff Ooi justify to join an party infest with "hostile" internal politics.

Jeff, if you feel strongly about taking a stand and joining DAP, I will respect and salute you for your decision. My preferance is if you can keep on blogging without being alligned to any party but if you have decided to join the DAP, I wish you all the best. You have just raised the stake higher. Rock on Jeff, Parliament needs people like you.

Hi Jeff

If you must join DAP, then I hope they can change too and be identified by all Malaysian as for them and not just a Chinese-party.

In any case, good luck to you.

Bravos! and Kudos! We need someone like you in parliament to show those clowns what a real politician is..

Jeff,
You have my fsmily's votes for Puchong(P) & Kinrara(S)

(like in Frankenstein)

WHY?!!! WHY?!!!

forgive me for the moment of immaturity...

Congratulations for the cross into politics, Jeff. I wish you well, even if it's a party I'd never support. =)

Hello Jeff,

Good to know you've thrown your hat into the ring. You have my support.

You may or may not remember me as the guy who came from SG to attend the "No To Police State in Blogosphere" forum. Sorry I can't make it for your press conference tomorrow -- just came back to SG from KL this morning in fact -- but I will do what I can over here to convince my friends and other expat Malaysians in Singapore to return and vote for change.

Fight on.

It is quite strange how many Malaysians think that DAP is for Chinese "only". Although there are Indian in there, also some Malays, but overall DAP is still viewed as Chinese Party, even by Chinese. Why is it like that?

DAP is promoting Good Governance. Many people can't differentiate Good Governance vs Politics.

Here is my simple interpretation for Good Governance vs Politics.

Good Governance: when every policy and decision government made is to benefit everybody, then it is a Good Governance.

Politics: when the policy only benefit a group of people, even majority group, it is a political decision.

Many times our policy makers did not do homework or just want to take shortcuts. Then they have to pay for the consequences.

DAP has been practicing Good Governance all along. You can see from Kit's blog.

It is time to make the change and it is time to do it now. Show your support to Jeff. Keep your doubt behind your head and make it history.

Patriotic1994,

Maybe because the perception about them being a Chinese-based party is very strong, maybe because the image of LKS has been very apparent, maybe there are more Chinese faces in there.

Just a thought...

"Friends are helping me organise a Press Conference tomorrow to let me make a stand for thinking Malaysians."

So you expect all thinking Malaysians to think like you? Or to paraphrase from GWB famous words "If you are not thinking like us than you can't think!"

Great start to your political career.

Anyway, I wish you well but don't count on my support.

There are many wonderful indivaiduals that are outstanding in the history of our country but for me the one that is outstanding at this point in time was the late Tan Sri Dr Tan Chee Khoon because I become aware of him also through his column in the Star.

Never have met him personally, but through his reputation. It is time to revisit him through his books, writings, biography and what nots.

I wouldn't put him on a pedestal but to listen to him in our own time.

It is too early to say, Jeff, but do look forward to your coming political career, if I what read is correct.

Hope you can be more than just being opposition. Think also if and when you are in power what would distinguish you?

Hi Jeff, I am a Puchongite too. Is it true that you are going to contest in Puchong/Kinrara? If yes, my vote (and my family too) goes to you!

jeff,

why are you ditching Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia as the party that you belongs to ?

I once remarks somewhere out there why we cannot say things in one go and have to keep coming back again and again, sometimes sounding like a broken record, but I suppose it is unavoidable being a social being...;-)

Jeff, just to let you know and hope to many of the regular readers, I hear your question. Yeah, it is time to stand up and be counted for.

Dunno of any relevant great quote but that is the message I got for this particular posting by Jeff.

Jeff, I will walk with you, as always.

TwoTablet,

I always have very high regards for the late Tan Sri Dr. Tan Chee Khoon. He wss not a prolific speaker but he is always well prepared when he spoke in Parliament. If I am not mistaken, he is the only active opposition leader that is awarded a Tan Sri.

Unfortunately, our present crop of opposition leaders are crap compared to him, mostly self serving and shallow.

Yes, it is time to revisit him through his books, writings, biography and what nots for aspiring young politicians.

best of luck in DAP.

Another reason to vote for DAP.

..but with great power comes great responsibility.

Jeff, I want to vote for you, how do i go about changing from Ampang voting to your area?

Congrats bro Jeff ...
continue to fight for "LEVEL PLAYING FIELD FOR ALL MALAYSIANS".

Good for you, Jeff! Too bad I am no longer a Malaysian. Otherwise you sure would have my vote.

Go and make us proud -- work for a Better and Just Malaysia.

Will catch up with you if and when I am home for a visit. That is if you still have time to meet :) !

Cindy

Jeff,
All the best. As you have always done, seeking the truth without fear or favour.
Cheers.

You have my support. Enough said.

Congratulation.

What DAP needs now is to launch a campaign on how to register as a voter. They manage to recruit many talented people like jeff and tony and many more, but what they need now is the voters.

The last election, out of 200 of my high school mates, only 5 voted. Everyone told me it is a waste of time voting because BN is going to win again.

Most of them never even bother to register as a voter, most of them don't even know how to register, DAP, together with the other opposition should kick start the "Register as a Voter" awareness campaign before it is too late.

The supporters are there, the question is how to turn these youngster into voters.

I hope with you and many of the other talented people are able to bring DAP to the next level.

best reject DAp and be independent. Maybe join forces with other fellow bloggers on a new platform based on a loose group of independent candidates. that way you will be able to lead with a conscience and not dictated by politcs within party.

wish you well...and give BN a fight..It is time.

It is high time we need new leaders. Distinctive leaders.

The truth must be learnt.

UMNO does not represent all Malays.
MCA does not represent all Chinese.
MIC does not represent all Indians.

Not all Malays want to be associated with UMNO.
Not all Chinese want to be associated with MCA.
Not all Indians want to be represented by MIC.

We must do away with partisan and the conquer and divide which is inherited from pre-Merdeka.

50 years have gone by. We should all move ahead together irregardless of race, state or religion.

Now I know where my vote goes in the coming general elections.

Let the truth be heard! :D

Good luck Jeff and like the other commenters who echo similar sentiments, our thoughts are with you!! :D :D :D

Congratulation, you got my full support. You'll get my support even if you join PAS, anything that will get BN out.
Life is one long politics, even if you live in the jungle, the policies of the government will affect you. Those who said politics don't affect them is living with their head in the sand.
Syabas!

Syabas.

Jeff,
You have taken a stand and I think it is the right one. We need more men and women of your type in our public life for the future of Malaysia, nation building, a united Malaysia with social justice, without corruption and all those vices we experience now under BN rule.
Best wishes, Jeff
KSN

A lot of people makes bones about DAP being a de-facto chinese party and is not multi-racial.

But if you are invited to two parties this weekend, will you pick the one that gives out free burgers, or the one that give out lectures on why free burgers are bad?

Which party would you go? Which party should you go?

Too bad i'm not invited to the burger party :>

ALL THE BEST!

Best of all, God is with us.

Jeff,
I salute you for having the courage to put yourself on the line for what you believe is right. Many people have the same belief as you have but they do not possess the same conviction as you. Many are fast and good at speaking their minds but not many are willing to lift a finger to do the right thing.

DAP may not be the most ideal party to join but I believe you know deep in your heart that they are fighting for what is right and just. DAP may seems unlikely to win majority's hearts but that never seems to dampen their spirit to fight for justice.

You, and the rest of DAP, have my deepest respect and my vote.

Jeff,
All the best!

Well..congrats on ur choice but I am quite disappointed, i'd prefer u to remain an independent blogger, but keep the good work going.

Jeff

Good luck and best wishes.

I repeat and support what one reader said somewhere else:

There is need for a paradigm shift in attitude and behaviour in DAP after being in Opposition since time immemorial.

The first change of attitude is DAP leadership wanting to go to the election and develop a strategy to WIN Govt. As we all know, the party to leader Govt has to be a Malay supported political party. That's the hard fact and truth every non Malay has to accept. Otherwise the non Malays will be living in a dream. Perhaps in the next 10 generations things will change. For now, DAP must work with another Malay party.

With your good relationship with PAS, Keadilan leadership, perhaps you can be a more credible bridge between DAP and these two parties, to form a Barisan Alternatif that can win Govt. It is all about compromise for the long term gain, which the present DAP leaders refuse to come to terms with.

Congrats Jeff.

Aside to Andrew, you have made a good point, similar to the story if one should give out free fish or teach a man how to fish.

Either way, DAP has been over the past, since its humble beginning been catagorised as a chinese party. In fact, almost all mainstream political parties are pretty much race based or religion based. Gerakan claims to be multi-racial but its still light years ahead of convincing the general public that it is.

Question: Will a race based party be accepted by all, when its lead by a non-malay?

I Dont think the country is ready for this, given how BN has ruled thus far.

What would be good as a start, is to make DAP truly multiracial, get prominant & hardworking malays, to join in and i still feel for the time being the only way you can get support is to nominate a Malay PM.

Have a balanced parliment in terms of racial composition and clean up the country. They only way 1 can get people support is to clean up the country from the scum left behind over the last 30 years of NEP.

Then, DAP will get more credibility and we can see if the society is ready for a country led by a PM thats capable without bothering about their racial sentiments.

Either way, Jeff, Good luck. Put some thoughts to multi-racialism in order for the opposition not to sink into the same pitfall of BN.

U have my vote.

Congratz,

I always voted for DAP, but I too believe that DAP gives too much impression of a Chinese party. Although they do try hard to shake off this mentality from the voters. But reality is reality. They do push for Chinese votes in every election.

When will the Chinese DAP come up and speak for the Malays, Indians and other Bumis. Hopefully you can.

from a Malaysian Chinese

angryyoungman, DAP has spoken and stood up for downtrodden Malays and Indians and other Malaysians many times. Its just that the press did not report on them.

Lim Guan Eng went to jail defending a Malay gal from Malacca. Forgotten the details but there it is.

I think the government through their media has alienated PAS and DAP to be communal and sectarian but potray themselves as the consensual government. But look deeper you see the alienation as well, UMNO, MCA and MIC each not taking care of their own people but only of themselves.

While the one that is more Malaysian in composition, Gerakan is also seen as a Chinese based party, again this is a job well done by the local media. I guess all this while the Alliance have never had much trust in Gerakan. Its time also for Gerakan to pull out from BN.

There are some who believe in changing from within, but some are inclined to change from outside.

Jeff, I stand with you.
