Tell us...

I often watch NatGeo channel, Seconds from Disaster. The programme always starts like this: "Disaster don't just occur. It's a series of critical events that happened before disaster took place..."

Where were you when KL City was temporarily turned into a vast swimming pool Sunday night?

How do you feel now, not just about mitigation of flash floods, but about the entire governance system?

The gods have been unkind to the DID.

Just a few days ago in the press, some chappie had already said the SMART isn't enough on its own to contain the floods.

Then, the floods hit. But did anyone remember he said that.

Noooo! All they did remember was SMART will be the end to their perennial flood problems [age-old marketing problem].

It would be comical, if not downright criminal, if after all the retention ponds are built, and the flood still happens.

Wouldn't that be a sight? I wonder what else THEY will blame next? England?

I feel that the entire govenance system performance is below par. Their concerns for the future is shorter than we anticipated, thus, always missing the forest for the trees. With so many failed projects examples these days, I wish they could realised the importance of knowledge in their chosen field and bring about a steady progressing MAlaysia for all.

It is Visit Malaysia Year 2007, what would the visitors or foreigners think of us when they see our streets are clogged with rubbish after the flash flood on last sunday. It is so "MALU" that the inability of the authorities to prevent the recurring flash floods even though we have SMART tunnel. I think the Government owes us an explanation.

on Sunday night, i was at home. at 10.00 pm my friend called me that his house area banjir!! in his house the water was at knee level but once he got outside the water goes up till waist level..he was really mad. He told me that the short tunnel at Jalan Tun Razak (after the SMART tunnel) the water rise till the ceiling of the tunnel!!..heavy traffic also happenned

What most people do not understand is that Klang valley is like a tea cup with one outlet to the sea.
rain falling in surrounding hillsides, whether to the north, east or south, will eventually make its way to klang river.
When you have an unsusually heavy rainfall like one on sunday, the chances of flood is great. The best solution is to stay clear of flood prone areas.
Floods in KL have been consistent since the city was built.
After all, we should be smart enough to understand that we too are part of the problem if we refuse to submit to mother nature.

The entire system of governance, save except for a handful of honest God fearing/loving people, is based on the principle of enrich thyself. The more they spend, at inflated costs, the more they "earn". Who cares about long term solutions. Short term solutions mean more contracts, more repeat expenditure and more enrichment opportunities.

Even Johor Bahru has the same problem since way before I was born. The Air Molek area where the Federal offices are sited, continue to flood badly during heavy downpours.

In the meantime, obscene amounts of money is spent on so-called "study trips", lavish landscaping and over-priced decorative lamp posts.

The entire charade shown on TV of the PM giving stern warnings appear nothing but a charade. This is not the first flood but a repeat of numerous others in the past. The charade appeared to be an exercise to show the public he is seen to be doing something. By next week, in the usual customary way, almost everything will be forgotten, until the next flood.

Was in KL on Sunday night. Trap in the trafic jam for almost 2 hours.. tried all possible route to get back to puchong..in the end..went back to in-law place. Tido lagi bagus. Went back to puchong at 5:30 am the next morning.
Saw Bomba and JPA 3 rescuing people at Jalan Sultan Ismail near to Bank Pembangunan. SMART now become SEMAK.

This incident reminds me of an 'excuse' given by my wireless broadband provider. The technician said the Internet connection is unreliable due to rain even it is a light rain. Then my reply is wireless broadband technology is not suitable for Malaysia because Malaysia is a tropical country. I also wonder how the people in San Francisco and Netherlands react to earthquake and flooding respectively. Should they assign these incidents as fate or trying to mitigate the situations?

Its not right to judge the tunnel during the incident, mainly because the 3rd compartment for transporting water is not yet operational. Sometimes people forget that commissioning structures like the smart tunnel takes time, and that there has to be adequate checks before it goes operational.

In addition, aside from blaming the government which I'm sure, theres only so many of us here who would do so readily, we should also consider our own contribution to the floods. The rubbish that we throw indiscrimately, the development that we like to see, our laissez faire attitude to the environment are all more significant reasons that is easier to redress than just blaming the government.

Have mercy on english language. It's a DUMB tunnel!

The only main objective still valid is to squeeze msians' pockets for several decades. All other 'objectives' are rubbish.

The SMART tunnel IMO is a wonderful project but unfortunately it's not fully operational yet. They are currently installing water gates and monitoring devices in the flood tunnels. It is really unfortunate the the flood hits before it could be used.

I dun really think we should blame the government for this, the strange weather pattern due to global warming is also a factor. While Australia faces draught and currently a flood in New South Wales, Nort America faces snow storms, Middle Wast its cyclone, floods in China tropical areas like SEA faces unusual heavy rainfall although the frequency of rain reduces.Floods are not special to KL, Bangkok and Jakarta also face the same situation or worse from time to time. I dun think we'll ever see the floods go away, we can use human ingenuity to try to prevent them or minimialise the damage, but it's no guarantee they'll ever go away.

As usual, no explanation from the government why the flood. It gives the citizen to feel that they are trying to ignore the problem as if nothing happened. And no promise from the government that they will fix this problem once and for all. The only time the government promise, is during the election time. Got it?

Yes, Malaysian are forever forgiving. It is act of God anyway. So once again, they get away with the responsibility to explain.

I just have a question for the SMART tunnel. Assuming the water level has increased and filled up both middle and top level, what happen to the dirt that kept inside the tunnel after the flood? How about the tunnel lights, power switch box, and many items that may be damaged due to water... will government announce that it will cost X millions to replace all those lights, clean the mud and "downtime" of X weeks? It give me the same feeling to the parliment "bocor" case that cause few millions to repair.

Where to find official news? Can someone do some homework to explain all these?

Right. Nuff said. We have been taken for a long long ride. WHere else can you hear after all this bungling, the top dog, of the works ministry still keeps his job?
I thought I had enough, but actually, right now, its just the start. I will devite my free time to document all that is wrong, ad let's see if there is still any place to hide for this self centred, pocket filling bastards!
ENOUGH! Make your vote count next GE!

Some people say SMART should not be blame.

I say WTF,SMART should be take part of the blame even it is not in operation.
First, the tunnel has insulate a huge underground area ability to absorb water into underground.

Second, we don't know whether water are pumping out from the tunnel, which contribute to the flood.

Nevertheless, DID should take part of the blame. But THE PEOPLE should TAKE ALL the blame for voting a lame government.

Oh BTW, did anyone check the where did SMART discharge water? If I were you, I will stay away from those area during and after heavy rain.

Please check the facts about the SMART tunnel. They were planned and built by engineers and sophisticated equipment.

Here's a thread following the progress of the SMART tunnel.

http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=312375

just a suggestion....if the floods are always due to the Klang River overflowing ( besides clogged drains etc)...why no just 'shut down' the river? I mean divert it elsewhere.

The KR is, i think , dead & polluted and contains only rubbish - so why not?

"It is God's will" - I'll say it on behalf of Uncle Sammy. There is no 'copyright' plagiarism in this phrase. He doesn't need to worry.

And often used phrase, ever accepted by forgiving Malaysians.

Get real. A new government after the next GE is not going to make the floods go away. This is not something that could be overcome in the short term, and the location of KL and its geography requires an engineering solution.

Make your voices heard, make your complaints be taken noticed, but for freks sake, target the specifics of the problem instead of making sweeping statements like the government is to be blamed and the tunnel don't work. There are flood mitigation exercises being put in place, and their delivery should be a priority, and thats a valid area of concern. Inadequate policing and maintenance of the waterways is also a valid concern, and one which should be harped on. But to go beyond that and say the government doesn't work is not going to bring benefits to anyone, because the same problem that exist now with the floods will exist in the future.

Ever noticed the self-censorship of media? Not so much reporting and pictures of the flood. And even the plight of business owners, and individuals, whose cars are in for major overhaul / servicing?

Simple explanation. General election is round the corner ...

Now the tunnel could also be leaking. Gosh! looks like someone is gonna blame on poor workmanship again or the substandard contractors.

We want the best tunnel to help mitigate floods but we seem to hv forgotten that there's lack of drainage management and enforcements to prevent people fr clogging the drains with rubbish.

I can say this because I've personally encountered a town council encouraging shops to channel all their wastes directly into drains! Despite alerting the town council that it was against their own building regulations, yet it has been ignored.

The central govt can make fantastic set of laws, but do the state & local govts practices & enforces them???

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
