SMS Scam ( 1 ): Explain this, Maxis
SMS Scam ( 2 ): It's an organised white-collar crime

Yesterday, I said I don't subscribe to any SMS services except one, the Maxis/Star News Alerts, which costs me a flat rate of RM5 per month. My 10-year-old billing records with Maxis can attest to that.

Before I expose the scam instalment by instalment, I wish Maxis could explain why I was charged TWICE IN ONE MONTH for my Maxis/The Star News Alert, for bills dated January 28 and April 28, 2007, respectively?

Double charges appeared in Maxis Bill dated January 28 and April 28, 2007 respectively

I also want Maxis to explain why it had allowed its external content provider MT&T scam me with an unsolicited SMS service that terminated on my Maxis post-paid number at 22:48:09hr on April 20, 2007, via shortcode 36361 (013-203-3100) and billed RM4.00 in my Maxis bill dated April 28, 2007?

I am an aggrieved party. I hope Maxis could explain why I should file a report with the white-collar crime division of the Malaysian Police for, without prejudice) perpetrating the scam.

My Maxis post-paid Account No is 804202489. Go into your records, Mr Maxis. You know where to contact me.

Meanwhile, I urge Screenshots readers to scrutinise your bills. If you are an aggrieved party like I am, please email me your evidence.

This is what a Screenshots reader has shared with me about a celco's external Content Providers -- Mobile365, MT&T and MacroK -- scammed him and recorded on the celco's bill:

Jeff, not only this. I had a business visitor from overseas. He bought a DIGI prepaid. Now, in the short duration time of few days, he received a spam SMS to install ASTRO.

How in the world right after activation of line, the SMS got sent to him without subscribing or passing important contact to any Tom, Dick or Harry? He knows not a word of Malay.

Where the breach of security and privacy happens? At the end dealer or actually someone within the Telco company?

Think of it, there are so many breach of privacy. At the telcos and banks. Illegal questions are asked at the bank which does not guarantee of privacy.

With such disrespect, no wonder Malaysia can never rival Singapore / HK as a financial hub to attract money and FDI in.

At least, there is a record for postpaid. What about those using prepaid lines? The money would have been deducted automatically without even realising it!!

that is also if you are a postpaid customer. pity those pre-paid customers as such customers won't know what hit them (like a hit and run accident). And such customers won't have a record to show who scammed them as well.

hmmmm i opted not to receive itemised billing to save a bit of money every month, but maybe i am being charged a lot more instead.

I got this too. This month I have been billed another RM 11 for unsolicited SMSes. http://janemarries.danielkhoo.com/blog/?p=54

Jeff, you should bring this up to MCMC. It's unethical how this business is run by 3rd Party Content providers. Imaging if they can do this to 15 million subscribers, each being charged RM 3 per month, it adds up to RM 45 million to the culprits!

Yes, I had charges for mobile365 last month and I called MAXIS to enquire about it. They informed me that it was NOT MAXIS that was charging us. It was these other operators!????
Of course, I was confused. The bill was from MAXIS. I pay to MAXIS. THis fella from MAXIS tells me that MAXIS DID NOT charge me! Anyway, she told me that I could block these sms if I gave the intructions. This month no more sms and no charges. But I seem to receive alot of sms from MAXIS nowadays. But no charges, so ok. Just read & erase lah!

yeah, me too...damn it

i got this MT&T SMS - RM4

my sub-line:
AKNMTech 0.50
Macrok RM4

all happened in April bill.. b4 that, it is ok

i think those maxis user like me who subscribe plan 75, whenever we cant finish the rm75, they will simply con us since we are still paying max rm75 (so that it wont waste to Maxis). but somehow it is still tipu!!

last time we got one not too smart bank teller that managed to siphonend off millions from depositors by just deducting few cents from each over the counter banking transactions. Now, with active mobile phone lines counting to 23 million in the country anyone can turn to be an overnight millionaire by just deducting a mere 5 cents each from all mobile phone lines. Just imagine u r losing 5 cents credit or been illegally charged by 5 cents, someone out there are making millions!!!

In fact, digi prepaid user can register themselves to the website and check the itemised call online.

Last year, my (very old) mother-in-law was inundated by SMSes announcing results of lottery numbers. She was furious with it, but don't know what to do.

I didn't check with her whether she was charged for the unsolicited SMSes. But it took me two calls a few weeks apart to get it settled with Maxis customer care (yes, Maxis).

With the first call, I was asked to send a 'STOP' keyword back to the offending number. It worked for a few week before starting again. The second call to Maxis resulted in a 'consultant' tweaking somtehing on the system (I guess) and worked effectively so far.

My regret is, if Maxis have the tool to block it outright, why did not they do so when customers call in the first time?

Same thing happen to me before. Called MAXIS, and they said that i am the one who subscribe to their service. I check the date and time that they claim the supposedly 'sms request'. I was having a dinner with my friends at a restaurant. How the heck did i sent one without me knowing about it? Maxis customer service said 'i can help you block all future incoming external service provider sms'. What has been done i need to pay... Personally, i think there are people within the telco who are teaming up with the external provider.

OMG WTF

when I scroll down this comment box there is a video ad (spam) about SMS service called TAXXI.

when I refresh, it was gone and replaced by google ads

anyone got it?
I hope google is not becoming a culprit too in spamming blogs.

try replying 'STOP' to the short code of the service you received (eg. 36361). It works on me years ago but not sure it still works now.

to avoid these irritating 'services' in the future, try to prevent from participating any sms voting or sms contest. there is a risk that your phone number will be disclosed. :)

JEFF OOI says: You are quite ignorant of technology advancement in SMS subscription services. Your concept is 2002 or probably older. Nowadays, the rogue CPs have gone upmrket. You don't don;t have to deposit your database with them. They cam buy mobile user database and scam you as they please. There are runners who can offer package deal (database & execution of Spoofing) for a price.

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
