New ranking system on Technorati

May 4 US time, Technorati made some new changes to their blog ranking system by highlighting a new ‘Authority’ rank which now determines a blog’s position within its Most Linked-to ranking system.

Technorati Team member Dorion Carroll explains that Technorati Authority is the number of blogs linking to a website in the last six months. The higher the number, the more Technorati Authority the blog has.

Importantly, multiple links from the same blog doesn't add to Technorati Authority, as they just come from the same echo chamber. In other words, if a blog links to your blog many times, it still only count as +1 toward your authority. Put it another way, each new link to your blog will be taken to account for your Technorati Authority for 180 days after it has been tracked.

Meanwhile, the classic Technorati Rank is still a good indicator of a blog's relevamce within the entire blogosphere.

Technorati's Carroll explained that Technorati Rank is calculated based on how far you are from the top.

The blog with the hightest Technorati Authority is the #1 ranked blog. The smaller your Technorati Rank, the closer you are to the top. [...]

The #1 ranked blog is the blog with the most other distinct blogs linking to it in the last 6 months. If your blog's rank is, say 305,316, this indicates that there are 305,315 blog ranks separating your blog from the #1 position.

Under the new ranking system, Screenshots is now ranked at 1,078 by Technorati Authority, and 1,809 by Most-Linked classification -- with 6,932 links to this blogger.

For illustration, Engadget has an Authority of 27,491 while Boing Boing is 20,856 at the time I blogged this. These are the world's Top 2 blogs measured by unique links.

In contrast, Screenshots is about 1,809 positions away from Engadget -- the Number One blog in the world -- among some 71 million blogs tracked by Technorati on the world wide web.

In May last year, Technorati was tracking only 55 million blogs in the know universe. Sixteen million new blogs, that's how fast the blogosphere has mutated in the last one year or so.

ZAM should tell us whether I should classify myself as a Professional or Unprofessional Blogger, though I am convinced I belong to the latter as I don't blog for my three square meals except to have intellectual conversations with my cyber-friends on a daily basis..

The DoshDosh blog has a good description of these changes on Technorati. The blogger gives a good explanation of the changes, including navigating the blog profile pages on Technorati.

Another vivid observation on Technorati's Authority Rank has come from Instigator Blog. He says: "It’s clear that a higher Technorati Authority is better."

Stan Schroeder is also monitoring the matter as Technorati Blog begins to shed lights on its new ranking algorithm.

Eerm, the 1078 is not the "ranking" of authority, it just means how many individual blogs link to yours.

JEFF OOI says: You need to read more diligently. The 1,078 number is the Technorati Authority Rank based on 6,932 links linking to Screenshots. Please see the screen-capture I had provided. Going by Technorati staffer Carroll's definition, it means Screenshots is still 1,809 positions away from the Top 1 blog it tracked i.e. Engadgets. So, evidently, when you take the 1,078 to mean "how many individual blogs linked to yours" is not accurate. My Authority Rank, on last check is still 1,078. See the screen-capture I had provided again.

Oh wait, forget my previous comment. I thought that you thought authority as a ranking, but when I reread your post you didn't meant it at all. Sorry for misunderstanding.

Huh? You said it yourself: In other words, if a blog links to your blog many times, it still only count as +1 toward your authority.

So 1078 is the number of individual blogs linking to you, in the last 180 days.

Initially I posted that first comment because I thought you thought that your blog is ranked at 1078th place... That was because your wording (now ranked at 1,078 by Authority) at first sounded to me like you are taking it as a ranking instead of a numerical count of blogs. But when I read for the second time, I realized that it might just be the way you wrote it, and you didn't really mean 1078 as a ranking.

JEFF OOI says: You are splitting hairs. The Technorati directory just laid it down plan and simple: QUOTE Authority: 1,079; Rank: 1,806; 6,932 links to this URL (www.jeffooi.com) sorted by authority.

Please see the screen-capture I had provided, if you have can't understand the simplicity of Technorati ranking system, then write to them to seek clarification. I really don't see a basis for further debate because the context is on how much people like ZAM understand blogs while you chose to rant on a side show which isn't the crux of my blog entry. Is this the reason why ZAM wanted a category for Unprofessional Blogger>

Where do you think Star, NST, Bernama etc will rank???

please don't make life difficult for zam as he's already fighting very hard to understand the world of blogosphere ...

everyone knows how inferior malaysian ministers are when comes to "technology" ... what they know is to get (during their political speech) people to gain knowledge by surfing the internet (layari lah internet) ... that's it ...

more than that, they're sweating like nobody business ...

anyway congrat on your technorati ranking - it shows you're one of the site which command authority ...

cheers
