Nasi (Kandar Perth) dah bungkus...

Puteri Nasi Kandar, otherwise known as Nasi Kandar Perth, has closed shop barely five months after the premiere opening.

Yes, we are talking about the Nasi Kandar Perth that launched PM Abdullah Ahmad Badawi into infamy during the Johor floods late last year.

If you remember, January 10, Malaysiakini ran an expose that revealed Abdullah had deemed it fit to be in Perth opening the nasi kandar restaurant, set up by his brother Ibrahim and Penang tycoon Lim Ewe Jin, rather than spending time with the country folks when disastrous floods hit Malaysia’s southern region, taking 17 lives and displacing 90,000 people.

However, Screenshots reader Phil Brown, an ex-Malaysian now living in Perth, yesterday found to his surprise that the restaurant has closed for good. He took some pictures of the closed shop to give you a good treat:

"Although the service has always been bad, the food was pretty good by Perth standards," said Brown..

No one can't help but compare one against another. Especially between an incumbent and his predecessor.

With that in mind, has Tun Dr. Mahathir been caught with his pants down like this?

Any similar situation of faux pas?

If not, why do we have these kind of leaders?

I've been there and the food SUCKS! it is run off the mill brahim's packet sauce. Makan Makan next door to it is even better, and the food is not that good either.

An Omen for The Lah?
Should call upon the con-spammer-dream-artist Maire Callas to spam his email with promises of 'wonderdull dreams', but again if only he knows what an email is.

It closed down because no affirmative action in Perth, I guess!

He flew all the way, presumably on state funds,
to open this teeny lot, reminiscent of one in a rundown malaysian area,
while half the state was drowning?

He doesn't seem to carry himself well as prime minister and has no presence as a national leader, this ex-religious teacher.

One can only hope the fate of the country he's 'running' won't suffer the same as that of the Puteri Nasi Kandar, Perth.

All the more, AAB chose to open this restaurant when the people in Johore were in dire straits.

This is a case of a leader with wrong priorities. Now that the outlet he opened has lingkup, what fraction of a benefit is there to our country for his time and presence?

Memalukan!

After hearing about the launch of Puteri Nasi Kandar through the Malaysian blogs, I thought I would give it a try. On our first visit, we ordered the "2 meat 1 veg" combo. If I recall correctly, it was priced around AUD 8. We were given a brown coloured rice, which we were told was nasi tomato. So far, everything was good. My wife saw a tray with boiled eggs and sambal, and ordered one egg as a side dish.

At the check out counter, to our horror, we were charged an additional AUD 3.50 for the egg. The reason was because the egg was considered an extra meat dish. My normally timid wife, was outraged at this ridiculous price for an egg and demanded that the egg be returned. Depending on the exchange rate of the day, this could have amounted to approximately RM10.00 for an egg! Thank god a more sensible waitress rescued the day, and charged the additional egg as a side serve of sambal for the price of AUD 0.80.

We were almost vowing never to return, but the nasi tomato was hell nice. So, we thought we would return even after the RM10 egg scare.

On our next trip to the restaurant, we were expecting to order the same thing (minus the egg of course!). We were bitterly disappointed because nasi tomato was no longer on offer. Only steamed white rice. OK lah, never mind. We'll just have nasi putih and the "2 meat 1 veg" combo. The food was still good. On our way out, we saw a Malaysian Indian man tossing/flipping real roti prata. Whao! I thought. Only one other place in Perth does that and it is called JJ's in Spencer Village, Thornlie which is a long drive from Perth city centre. I must make it a point to try the prata on my next visit.

The following week, I packed my three children and a neighbourhood boy in the car and my kids were all excited and looking forward to this real prata made by a real Malaysian Indian man. To our disappointment, the Indian man was nowhere in sight. Instead, we were served reheated frozen pre-packed prata. I suspect the brand of the pre-packed prata was Kawan. Some of you may be familiar with this brand. The price was again questionable. AUD 3.50 for frozen prata! Malaysia Boleh! So, with the 4 kids, I had to fork out AUD 14.00 for 4 frozen pratas. I was about to swear never to return, but the curries and dishes were to damn good. I will give them satu lagi chan.

On my final visit before they closed shop, another heart attack event took place. After ordering our food and proceeding to the check out counter, the price when up 50%, from around AUD 8 to around AUD 12. WTF! Malaysia Lagi Boleh! Vision 2020 sudah sampai. I found a new found respect for Pak Lah. Dr. M could only conjure crooked bridges but Pak Lah can increase prices faster than Samy Vellu can hike the toll !!! That's it, I've had enough. How can I pay AUD 12.00 when Cafe Karachi in Murray Street in Perth city centre, can serve you a large nasi Beryani with acar and a huge chicken thigh for around AUD 6? No, surpise then that (in the words of Jeff Ooi) ... nasi sudah bungkus.

Contrary to Neil's comment, this wasn't a "teeny lot". It was a rather large restraunt that could have easily accomodated a small food court.

Spent quite a bit of time there working as a waiter and totally agree with Phil's comment, decent food bad service - but more accurately bad management. The whole idea of a franchise of "asian McDonalds" fell through when they couldn't even manage one outlet.

I wouldn't put the onus on the PM to justify himself opening the restraunt, but his general attitude and follow-up towards the whole flood/restraunt debacle would in my opinion show where his priorities lie.

Folks

Well, what can you say?

The old saying" "Politics is bad for business" still rings true OUTSIDE Malaysia.

But if you live in Malaysia: "Politics (only with UMNO) is good for business". Why do I say that?

See how all the UMNO supporters, academicians, Backbenches coming out to support MAYBANK to continue its racist policies against non Malays and the legal profession despite an outcry from a non-racially based Malaysian Bar Council.

MAYBANK is a business entity with strong UMNO (read Govt) support. And like Maybank, if you have a business with UMNO connections, you can get the Malay newspapers, UMNO politicians and racially biased so-called academicians with PhDs and professionals rallying to your side, even if the issue is being condemned in the public and national interest.

a) If you want to have a life in Malaysia, be nice to UMNO

b) If you want to be financially comfortable, join UMNO or be a clapping supporter of UMNO

c) If you want to be really rich, join UMNO or be a lapdog of UMNO (eg join MCA or MIC)

c) If you want to be a millionnaire yourself, hold a position in UMNO eg Ketua Bahagian and be an UMNO MP

d) If you want your family and relatives to be filthy rich, make sure you become a Minister or at least a Permanent Secretary.

And you are therefore set for life.

And I thought this was a 'defiant' message from the 'Princess', kena tipu. Hahahaha, so hopefully this 'Princess'(N.Kandar) would not be making a return anytime soon.

hahahahahaha

so Malaysian like, din't he ask the Australian gov to make sure that 50% of his customers are non bumis?

just like proton, going going, groin..... ouch

There is one in Melbourne in Box Hill but it not with any political party as when it launched, did not see any high profile political figures. It would be funny if that does better than the one in Perth as it goes to show what happens when there is no Govt money involved....show that the Govt should not be running the country when they can't even run a restaurant in a even playing field.

Well...I have to say the food is never, ever good, (from my 3 times visit) even to Perth standard.
You can verify this with all Malay community in Perth. Initially, I had contemplated to bring my white colleague to taste Malaysian food, luckily I did the food tasting first.

Even small Indonesian shop like Bintang cafe and a new shop called Batavia cafe, or even a small, malay gerai in International Food Court along Albany Highwy tasted better. And the customer service, were not up to Malaysian standard !

Another thing, I remember that I did email the management about the quality of the food, and someone replied, saying that Nasi Kandar Puteri is going to undergo a major overhaul / rebranding process. huhu

But it is located in the good location. At least one P (in the Marketing's 4Ps) are being fulfilled. They even had a garage sale to sell the cooking utensils etc. 2,3 weeks back.

Kayu Nasi Kandar, Pelita, etc etc.....please.

Next time they want ot open these kind of cafes and restaurants in far away places they should provide a redemption scheme for all the government sponsored and MARA sponsored students so taht if they patronise these restaurants they can redeem their bills. After all in the context of helping the Malay entrepreneur such a policy would be within its context.

Good food, bad service?

Hey, just like Malaysia. Great resources, poor delivery. Runs in the family, eh?

Nasi Kandar Perth close shop? Nevermind, you fly chefs all the way from KL to Melbourne!

Thank you to The Star for this timely piece of article:

I think it is not that simple. I believe PM's brother and Ali Baba Chinese friend have the capital to run the business longer even if it suffered losses for months. I suspect the investment there was used as a way to get money out of Malaysia and once that purpose was achieved, the business served no more purposes and had to be closed. What do you all think?

not only this will bungkus. more will bungkus even in Malaysia in coming months.

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
