Corrupt customs officers at Johore-Singapore Second Link... ( 3 )

ZAINAL, the Link Kedua Customs Dept supervisor implicated in the case where receipts were not issued for the payment of import duties, has been transferred to desk duties and will no longer have dealings with the public. Quote Star Online:

State customs director Datuk Halimah Salleh said the transfer was effective Tuesday following the department's initial investigation.

"We want our officers to know that we do not condone such actions," she said, adding that the officer was only posted to the Second Link two months ago.

I have told Dr Muhammad Ghazie Ismail of the latest development. He has been instrumental in making Malaysia clean of corruption albeit in a small way -- by alerting Screenshots when things like this happened and be prepared to stand by it, while the mainstream media took over from bloggers in a collaborative way.

I feel very happy hearing this :) Lets hope that this do not just happen because a "DR" complained.

why wasn't the customs official sacked? the message this sends is it's ok to exploit your cosy public 'servant' position until such time you are caught then you just get transfered. although it is better than nothing, i'm still disgusted by the tap-on-wrist outcome.

it is things like this that make it harder to deny tony pua's statement.

Recalled that a minister mentioned that only about 20,000 Malaysians read blogs and write for each other amusement. Power to these 20K readers for bringing an issue to bear!

According to Dr Ghazie Ismail's e-mail (published by Screenshots on May 22, 2007 at 07:06 AM), Dr Ghazie himself wrote:

I am appalled that these officers and Head of Customs
at the entrance into Malaysia can be so blatant and this
is not an isolated incident.

Why then has only one Customs officer (Zainal) been transferred to desk duties? What about the other customs officers implicated?

And is the transfer to desk duties the only punishment for the corrupt behavior? Does that rap on the wrost reflect how seriously the State customs director Datuk Halimah Salleh views the wrongdoing? Not even demotion?

I was hoping for an official inquiry leading to criminal proceedings if found warranted!

Personally I DON'T CONDONE with policies of customs hassling the rakyat with a couple of personal imports at any of the borders. Concentrate on big time smuggling and bulk imports where the importer anticipate profit.
Should we think corruption would decrease and the conduct of custom officials will improve hereon?.. I honestly DON'T think so and there'll be rotten apple officials cropping up anytime in future..afterall, the "transfer" penalty is rather light punishment and have little effect on the guilty.
To me, a corrupt official involved in bribery is no less a daylight extortionist or daylight robber in uniform in the name of a democratic government.
Tell me if its any different or less. Criminals have been put behind bars for lesser offences.

I still say..REMOVE the whole lot and tax policies there once and for all!. Its the definitive CURE for corruption in that department in those locations!.

Well done..again. Jeff. Here it simply goes to show, that blogs are indeed helping the ordinary joe get their message across. (dr Muhammad Ghazali isn't actually quite an ordinary Joe, but I am sure you get my point)

But didn't I read somewhere that Main Stream Media are advised against picking up any stories from blogs or the internet?

but then again, Maybe I was sleeping when they did say it.....

what is the point of investigating if the officer implicated with serious corruptions and damaging the image of our nation got away with a slap of the wrist and get to keep his job.

Instead, he ought to be charge in court. Otherwise, I seriously doubt anyone will take the actions seriously.

Jeff, I am no Dr. Mohd Ismail. My case I highlighted also warrant a proper investigation too. Don't i?

this is just a tip of the iceberg, corruption is ingrain into most govt servants in malaysia (sorry for generalising).

clamp down corruption with a jail term + sack, removing them to a desk job is pure Bxll Sxxt.

I know one leading local bank who will SACK thier staff even he steal a mere 10 sen, because they do not want to compromise on INTEGRITRY! Malaysia boleh, transfer dept sufficient punishment?!

They just shifted the problem from one side to another side. It just the other side he cant deal with the public.

And no matter what, he still gonna get his increment on coming July.

Sigh !

Funny..Malaysia is the only place that when you caught red-handed, you get promoted to admin position from the frontdesk job.

yupp.. no wonder and no doubt, the whole civil SERVANT system is CORRUPT

i.e.
the corrupt pegawai or kakitangan would only be transferred for any corrupt practise

i.e.
the is no punishment, no sacking, let alone charged in court

and that guy would still be in the civil service system

hence, one titik of nila, two nila, three nila, still in the belanga.

and these conduct of transferring (more like hidding) the pegawai or kakitangan, what been going on for years.

no wonder it gets worse day by day.
no wonder hang tuah said;
"buat baik berpada-pada, buat jahat jangan sekali"

It is a shame to us all. Wondering the salary increment will deter this or to only reward these people for their wrongdoing.

I took the aeroliner bus today from Singapore to PJ. I had done some shopping at the Great Singapore sale and was prepared to do battle with the customs people. There was literally NOT ONE SINGLE CUSTOM officer at their station when we went through at approximately 11 a.m.! Either taking extended coffee break or now not worth their time to check bags because hands got smacked.

desk job ? government is full of them !!

that's it ? oh we'll put him away from public...we don't tolerate this actions..hello ? he committed a crime..bribery is a crime....and criminals should and must be punished..

desk job, i last checked is not a punishment....

good job jeff ... though the transfer might just be something to show public that they're doing something about it, at least the awareness is there that normal citizen is too fedup with the whole govn mechanism that he/she has to go to influential blog to express their problem which no one seems to care ...

not surprise that he wasn't charged as his boss might have learn the skill of close-one-eye and leave the news disappear over time ...

hey, i read about you in today's in-tech - the photo of you wearing pyjamas blogging at home :P

cheers ...

No wonder we are still the leading country with number of civil servant over population in this region.

You all don't seriously think sacking is the best way, do you? We will become the leading country with number of unemployment over population then...

Guys,

While I understand the frustration undertoning you all, let us be fair.

Innocent until proven guilty, remember?

It is a common practice for alleged offenders to be temporarily removed from his/her position of power, to prevent him/her abusing even further in act of 'cleaning' up his/her mess while investigation is on-going.

We've only heard one side of the equation. Give "Zainal's" superiors the benefit of the doubt for the moment, that they are really looking into this.

A light slap on the wrist. And that is for a corrupt officer. No wonder the corruption practice can never be wiped out. The government is taking things too lightly. We have this guy who has been found to breach the code of conduct, and a very serious one too, and yet, he is only be transferred to desk duties. This department is sure a breeding ground for the inept.

why is it when blogs are implicated negatively, they are "blogs", but when they are instrumental in positive development, they are referred as "Internet news portal"?

I believe the ACA can only investigate if a report has been made so if none was done this chappy gets to do the desk job which IS a punishment because he won't get the 'fringe' benefits of a enforcement job see !? .....RM 50 here RM 50 there ,,,who needs increment ?

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
