Bernama oh Bernama!
Celcom ordered to stop profiteering on Nazrin's wedding

May 19, 11:55hr, Bernama issued a dispatch quoting its general manager Azman Ujang as saying that the national news agency is not in any partnership with any telecommunications company to offer video clips of the royal wedding between the Raja Muda of Perak, Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, and Raja Puan Besar Tuanku Zara Salim.

Azman said Bernama would like to apologise for any confusion arising from the purported offer, while emphasising that Bernama's management had not sanctioned the release of the footages via mobile devices or the Internet.

Incidentally, it was Bernama itself which released a dispatch on May 17, datelined Kuala Kangsar and headlined 'Celcom Offers Exclusive Clips Of Raja Nazrin-Zara Wedding', to announce that it was in partnership with Celcom to offer customers video clips of the three-day royal wedding. The news item has been indexed by Google Search, see screenshot below:

However, if you hit the URL for the particular news item, it's apparent that Bernama has quietly taken it down as the page now draws a blank, see screenshot below:

Interestingly, the frontpage lead in Nanyang Siang Pau today blared a glaring headline, which reads:

霹王室禁大婚短片 天地通遵照终止服务

Translation:

Perak royal family bans wedding video clips;
Celcom complies and stops download service.

The Nanyang news item quoted both the communications chief of royal wedding and Minister Rais Yatim as saying that the wedding was a solemn affair and its video clips should not be exploited for commercial benefits.

Nanyang said Celcom issued a press release on May 18 to announce that it was offering various video clips of the royal wedding 50 sen per 2-minute episode, and 99 sen per streaming clip of between 10 and 15 minutes long, starting yesterday (May 19).

Nanyang also quoted Celcom's communications manager as confirming that Celcom has stopped the chargeable streaming clips service with immediate effect.

Nevertheless, Bernama still hosts several video clips of the royal wedding for non-commercial downloads.

In Malaysia, sorry is the hardest word to say even when caught with the pants down.
Anyway, I do not have a video but a slideshow of our gathering last night. No SMS subscription needed to view.

Yes Celcom was trying to offer two types video clips one 2 min and other streaming clips between 10 and 15 minutes long. Celcom statement (see Part I below) states that clips can be accessed via the Channel X WAP portal at http://wap.channelX.com.my (now dead). Customers will be charged 50 sen for the two-minute clips and 99 sen for streaming clips. It was first thought the Raja Muda did not pay for the Media Centre service and Bernama had to resort to such a partnership to recoup back the expenses using Celcom
Another guffaw is the dispatch by Bernama (May 16, see part 0) titled: “People Can Send Congratulatory Messages Directly To Istana Iskandariah” - by sending letters, facsimiles and e-mails directly to Istana Iskandariah in Kuala Kangsar but there was not a squeak on the snail mail and email addresses nor the fax number.
There is so much secrecy surrounding the dissemination of information by the Media Centre (run by Bernama) that some electronic media virtually boycotted the coverage by just including a still image without visuals. And the regrettable thing is the POWER of BLOGS was not utilized to cover this event and where was the Tourism people, not invited? Even out of Perak State Cabinet Ministers were also not welcomed. And the big loser – ALL the local print media publishers– hundreds of thousand ringgit from the banned the congratulatory messages. The gainers - the seven caterers’ happiness at having been entrusted to prepare food for 6,500 guests.
