A grandfather poser for Tan Siok Choo

Besides Ooi Kee Beng's book and letters from Pesona Pictures Sdn Bhd and Tunku Ismail Jewa, I strongly suggest the granddaughter also read Hishamuddin Hussein's textbook for schools.

If Tan Cheng Lock mattered to history and the school children of tomorrow, Siok Choo should tell the Education Minister that besides his grandfather, yours was also there in the early days of nationhood building.

I think Siok Choo should shut up. Even her grandfather have some part in the making of Malaysia, it showsed that he had no fore sight and vision.

How can he agreed to a lopside agreement(who known for what ever reasons) that the Malays be in charge of politics and the Chinese in charge of the economy?

Now see who incharge of the politics and economy of the country?

Tan Cheng Lok, was pretty much in the early stages of nation building.

Although known as one of the main founders of MCA, his early political thinking is not that of the MCA's spirit. He was responsible for the idea of "Malayan Malaya" which the sme slogan was used by PAP as "Malaysian Malaysia" later "Singaporean SIngapore" and adopted by DAP, and in somewhat slightly different permuation, by Gerakan also. Passing of the slogan to others can be expected since MCA was already in Government and such slogan would not be in good taste with their other partners.

While the Malays unite to fight against Malayan Union, Tan Cheng Lok has since the early years of 1925-27 been promoting a similar idea of "united self governing British Malaya" which had the intention of removing the Malay advntage at the state level. Mind you, in those years, most of the 30% CHinese are not citizen of this country. Citizenship was only attained around independence as part of constitutionalised agreement (not a social contract plse). He fought to seek removal of clauses protectign Malay natural right imbedded in the various agreement between the British and Malay Royalties.

Tan Cheng Lok was also proposed for the present Constitutional Monarchy while in exile in India during the Japanese Occupation, crafting for a new Malayan Constitution when British return to power.

The British realising the agreement with the Malay Sultan are quite aware of the Malay natural rights and were very reluectant with the overly porous immigration policy. It has alwasy been British and Immigrant merchant and trading class that has pressured and enchroach into the various agreements.

A lot of the present socio-political thinking of the CHinese and Colonial of the time has a lot of its roots in the Merchant Class. Tan Cheng Lok's thought represents that thinking.

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
