Alien arrogance & a mugshot behind mug
A photographer can't possibly present his subject in the best light if he isn't allowed to do his job -- taking good photographs. The pictures will look very lousy, like these:

At the MDV-sponsored forum on digital content development at Ritz-Carlton this morning, I was doing what I have been doing all these years, taking pictures for my blog entries, which is now a hallmark in Screenshots.
Let's be frank. I ain't no overnight photographer -- I have taken pictures overseas and shot Soros-Mahathir in the best of their times, and my pictures were used in overseas magazines and websites. So I fully understood the etiquette associated with my job: A blogging photographer, a photographing blogger dedicated to his job, just like any professional.
There was this man from MAVCAP with a somewhat non Malaysian-sounding name: Anwar Ali Mustafa Jumabhoy. He walked up from several tables away, singled me out among other photographers, tapped my shoulder and said: "Don't stand there if you are not taking photographs." And walked off. Arrogantly. Full of anger. Full of air.
F6ck you, I said inside me.
I was doing my job. I was taking pictures, and I won't move from my vantage point until I got my best shot. And I should decide if I want to take my shots doggy style or standing up. But I won't stand a minute longer once I have finished my shots.
Nevertheless, I held my cool and completed my shots. Then, went up to him, look him sternly in the eyes and told him I wanted to talk to him later about his big fuss. From his arrogant response, I had to cut him short and told him in the face: "Can you be ruder? Obviously, you are not a Malaysian."
I made sure he shut the f6ck up.
To make sure I didn't get the wrong man, I took several of his pictures. He mugged his mugshots.

I don't give a shit if you are a big shot from MAVCAP, a MoF-funded venture capital (VC) company. If you scorn a photographer at work with disrespect, it's fair that the gesture is reciprocated if courtesy is no long in circulation.
By the way, at the end of the Forum, moderator for the second session which deliberated on the issue of Building the Roadmap for Digital Content Development stressed that, moving forward, the country sorely needs a single entity for the funding of e-content developers, and VC has no place in it.
Too bad, the mug-man went off before we broke for tea and so dashed my determination to talk to him man-to-man.
Read on for a full-frontal picture of this Jumabhoy descendant. I won't blame his parents -- who are dignified people from Penang -- for not teaching him good manners in preparing him to later work in Malaysia, supposedly to help nurture our nescient start-ups through VC seed-funding so that our country could breed its share of entrepreneurs to compete in the globalised world.
Enough is enough, I am cock sure of how my greetings might sound the next time he comes in my way.

To the son of a Jumabhoy, it's just a defunct website for him: Al-Phaq-Que.
Comments
Anwar Ali Mustafa Jumabhoy, too bad, you are f**king with the wrong guy. probably you should be aware who is around you before you make any statment. Go home and learn some manners.

I believe in karma, so don't worry, he'll get his just rewards. On the other hand, Jeff, you must have also done someone wrong prior to this to have received an unjust treatment. Your posting also doesn't sound so nice, so don't fight dirty or be too emotional. Must have strong character one.
JEFF OOI says: I didn't really get to finish off what I had intended, that's to talk with him man-to-man on the sideline. I had wanted to tell him that let's have some basic courtesy in my country, and please respect a photographer at work.

The moral of the story :
Never ever offend a blogger/photographer, even if you are a VVIP. Blogger always ownz...
even our PM also take blogger seriously, how can this fellow have the guts to throw his weight around?
JEFF OOI says: No, it's about a blogger emjoying any kind of privilege. The issue is that one has to have respect for a working person doing his professional work. If a photographer like me get f^ck by this fella, there is no guarantee he won't f^ck other photographers at work thenext time. I must get him to put a stop to this and recognise the fact that we were not at a function to play paparazzi, but to stay true to our profession. This is the principle wemust uphold in the work place. Please show some respect for a photographer at work, and don't be discourteous to the host who invited us to the function. That is biadab in Malay

jeff, i dont know if 'alien' is an appropriate way to describe a foreigner. not to sound politically-correct, but im sure ud agree in this day and age of populist cum nationalist cum racist right wing rhetoric, it would be wise to be wary of how we may contribute one way or another linguistically.
JEFF OOI says: Alien has many connotations. My context is, in high places where professional meet to deliberate on professional issues, being verbally rude to the host' invited guests is alien to Malaysian culture. Hence, I told the f6cker straight in the face: "Obviously, you are not a Malaysian."
on your actual post, slightly uncharacteristic of you i must say. i wouldve thought uve gone thru a lot more and i am a little surprised that u would blow off over something like this.
JEFF OOI says" I have heard of a certain Jap's senior officer yelling at investees and their own junior staff. But I am not beholden to these f6ckers as I don't live on their VC money. If he showed disrespect to a photographer at work, he asked for it. I am going to f6ck him at the same location he interferes with the performing of my professional duty, on the spot. He can run a tyranny in his fiefdom, but if he encroached my territory outside his fiefdom, I'll f6ck him on the spot.
but eh, we all love surprises every now n then. plus raw passion is sexy. in a strictly heterosexual way.

Mavcap is wholly-owned by MOF Inc. What's the govt doing investing in a vc-co in an industry that's at best tepid this side? Which also asks why this guy came over from the same of Singapore. Hope it won't end up like another inventqjaya but one can't expect anymore that this govt won't show how naive it will be again when it comes to interfacing with foreigners or on subjects it knows nothing about. As with the Proton decision, they should put on their thinking cap again. It's going to be another dunce.

I dont understand, what happen with MAVCAP???? Handling seed needs nurturing type of personality, Motivate, compassionate and encouraging. Look at his background. No wonder MAVCAP has f*ckup most it seed program.
Senior Vice President, Seed Ventures
Anwar Ali Mustafa Jumabhoy
Mr. Anwar started his career as a Naval Architect with Sunderland Shipbuilders Ltd, United Kingdom in 1980. In 1981, he moved to Singapore and joined Keppel-FELS Limited, as an Engineer. He left Keppel-FELS Ltd, as Corporate Development Executive, in 1987, to pursue MBA degree. He obtained a MBA (Hons) from International Management Development Institute, Switzerland in 1998. Following which he has held management positions in a number of companies.

pls allow me to be cheeky,
I was at Ritz-Carlton this morning, queuing up to take pictures for my blog entries, when a RUDE big shot from MAVCAP come by and singled me out among other photographers, tapped my shoulder and said: "Don't stand there if you are not taking photographs." And walked off. Arrogantly. Full of anger. Full of air.!!!!!!!!!
I tried to be reasonable so I asked politely why he did that. But you know what the f6cker did? HE IGNORED ME AND CONTINUE TO be ruder!!!! I was going to confront the RUDE big shot from MAVCAP further, but I was scared he might punch my fragile new camera, deforming it permanently and leaving me workless. :( So I held my cool and completed my shots. Then, went up to him, look him sternly in the eyes and told him I wanted to talk to him later about his big fuss. From his arrogant response, I had to cut him short and told him in the face: "Can you be ruder? Obviously, you are not a Malaysian." I made sure he shut the f6ck up. SO ANGRY! I HOPE HE DROPS DEAD AND TWITCHES IN AGONY BEFORE HE DIES, THAT LOUSY, MUTHAFUCKING RUDE big shot from MAVCAP!
I am so f6cking irritated with that RUDE big shot from MAVCAP! So what if he is a RUDE RUDE big shot from MAVCAP? Doesn't mean he can just singled me out among other photographers, tapped my shoulder and said: "Don't stand there if you are not taking photographs." and walked off, arrogantly, full of anger, full of air like that. If every single RUDE big shot from MAVCAP come and singled me out among other photographers, tapped my shoulder and said: "Don't stand there if you are not taking photographs." and walked off, arrogantly, full of anger, full of air, I still need to live meh?!!

Commentor lemaklaksa mentioned that there are quite a few Jumabhoys in this country, including in Penang. Yes, very closely knitted family. I have had business dealing with one of the prominent one in Penang before, very gracious people but can be real fussy. Stopped dealing with them after being stood up in payment over a small matter. If the small matter can result in payment being refused, better terminate any dealing with them.

I had personally had an encounter with him, when I applied for the CRADLE (http://www.cradle.com.my). I managed to get a slot to presents the business plan, unlucky me, it's that jerk that's vetting through my session. Half way presenting it, while had not even reach the gist of the business plan, harsh words (e.g. bull-sh*t) start coming out from his mouth.
Just wondering, how many more good ideas (maybe not mine) that have the potential to grow had been been shot down senseless.
JEFF OOI says: Anyone out there with similar bad experience with this f6cker -- SPECIFICALLY involving him in his professional capacity as a MoF-own VC manager -- please let me have the evidence and case study. I will be very interested for the sake of this country as taxpayers' money is at stake.

Jeff, see http://www.singaporelaw.sg/rss/judg/8591.html
There was a very high profile civil suit in Singapore more than 10 years ago in which a very old man (now over 100 but dunno still around or not) was made to attend court to be cross-examined.
Basically, the Jumabhoy's were suing each other for, what else, money.
A huge clan tearing each other apart for the spoils of inheritance makes for entertaining reading.
"....The remaining appellants are the sons of Mustafa, being Anwar Ali Jumabhoy (Anwar), Faez Jumabhoy (Faez) and Saleem Ali Jumabhoy (Saleem)...."
Here is that particular Jumabhoy who ruffled your feathers.
And I am not at all surprised.

Although MAVCAP scope is not only limited to Malaysian web startups, but I really wonder that how can somebody who don't even know Jeff Ooi(top local blogger) can be hired as a VP in a tech VC. Furthermore, as his position(Seed Ventures) suggested, he should be very familiar with the local IT scene.
JEFF OOI says: Let me clarify before it becomes irreversibly misconstrued. This has nothing to do with me being a prominent blogger. On the contrary, this only has to do with preventing a photographer from being harassed during his/her assignment. A media photographer is not at a function to paparazzi. So please accord him due respect and allow him/her the opportunity to perform his/her official duty: Taking photographs. Some photographers just suffer in silence for fear of jeopardizing the rice bowl. I chose to stand up in the face of the f6cker.

Just to shed some light on the name Jumabhoy.
I've worked with his brother Faez ( also a finance wiz and very involved in the Ascot Hotel Group / Scott Holdings HK and TransAct Asia Damansara ). Faez, confirmed a Malaysian citizen, appears to be quite OK from my own interaction, in contrast to your experience with his sibling who might more likely be a naturalised Malaysian citizen as well. The Jumabhoys were financially involved with Interactive TV through CSE Multimedia Sdn. Bhd., Shah Alam who were at one time attempting to push their design of a Set Top Box for Astro but their design was not accepted by Astro ultimately and CSE went ahead with designing and producing STBs for the Hotel industry.
Quoting from the internet: FAEZ JUMABHOY, the Managing Director of TransAct Asia Hotel & Leisure Resources in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, reveals that his education at the Cornell University in New York is basically applied, "You can walk into a job and be able to perform."
Faez still remembers the day he joined the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group as Group Operations Analyst. His direct boss left the day he arrived in Hong Kong.

Honestly, I kind of see this as 'the pot calling the kettle black'. Yeah, what he did to you - in interrupting you on your job and condescending you - is pure arrogance but what does it say about you in this post? You're pretty much airing it all in an air of arrogance too.

Hi Jeff,
I'm just curious tough. If this Jump-ahoy guy choose to sue you in court for your "returning a biadab attitude with a reciprocal gesture..", could he even sue you?
The reason I'm asking is that, this is my first time (in 3 years of relentless visits to your responsibly blogging blog) you've apparently found a way of publicly and openly humiliating those who pick on you (in this case on you for being a responsible photographer) and did so with full understanding of the legal implications.
Kudos to you and I would like to see more of such brave revelation of those who think themselves as self made Gods who pick on helpless souls like you.
Good Job Jeff, Keep it up!!!!
p/s: what does "f6cker" mean cos I could not find that in any dictionary.

Btw, please do correct me if I'm not politically correct. :)

I would really want to see a case (maybe the 1st ever in Malaysia) where a person's career is being totally destroyed by a blog !
