Is blogger-hunting season over?

YOU BET! According to Associated Press which quoted Bernama, Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi "has shot down a proposal to order local bloggers to register with the government, saying existing laws are enough to deter Internet users from posting malicious content".

The better reason, however, should be that Shaziman and ZAM had absolutely no clue as to how to register anonymous bloggers who run anonymous blogs hosted on local servers -- which I doubt server existed. Until proven wrong, I shall hold the belief that all anonymous bloggers use services hosted overseas to escape the arm of Malaysian law.

National Bloggers Alliance -- All-Blogs -- pro-tem president Rocky says the government should stop going round and round in circles where blogging in this country is concerned. Otherwise, we'll get deputy ministers and ministers shooting themselves in the foot.

Meanwhile, the Shaziman faux pas has driven many more ugly headlines about Malaysia, worldwide:
- IT News, Australia: Malaysia signals crackdown on Bloggers
- P2Pnet.net: Bloggers under threat in Malaysia
- The Age, Australia: Malaysian ministers in fresh attack on bloggers

I do not see the need for the government to interfere with the affairs of the Internet. No doubt a powerful tool for disseminating information to the public but I think the authorities should take the upper road and not be bog down by the contents on the Internet.

The media should be free from all constrains of the law and should be free from all regulation. This in fact is the philosophy from John Dewey stating that men are inherently rational beings and therefore they can decide and think for themselves, knowing right from wrong, good from evil. It is all about choices that we are constantly making.

It just shows that the government is paranoid over the whole blogging situation. If the leaders from the present day BN led government do not have anything to hide, they shouldn't be afraid of what is written about them. The best way to improve is to take criticisms.

No need to register bloggers is the way to go. I am all for freedom of the Internet. As a free person I can write anything that I want without fear of being persecuted by the government and the authorities.

It is always the case that we do not have forward thinking leaders in this country. They make rash decisions which then will be thrown out as a stupid idea. Our country lacks forward thinking leaders. The current ones are 10 generations behind in the ice-age!

NO REGISTRATION OF BLOGGERS!

"It just shows that the government is paranoid over the whole blogging situation"

Who is being paranoid here? Despite of govt bashing culture in internet, all I see is under-cooked proposal from Shaziman & Zam - that is pretty much about it. I bet they dont understand anything basic about internet either. If it is PakLah's proposal.. then it is really something.

Hi Jeff,
I wouldn't let my laurels down, he's being careful now and it's not a silver-lining.

ZAM and Mr. Registrar is left out to dry by themselves but it's just sandiwara for the moment, until they work 'closely' with a neighbouring country to formulate new 'frameworks' that will eventually be tested on prosecuting bloggers. Still, we have the NAB and you to monitor these anomalies and keep us updated.

jaguh kampung. in malaysia hero, outside zero. these wankers try and control everything, but hit a massive roadblock when the internet came in the picture. register bloggers... haha. what a joke. in the real world, these clowns are not even worth the soil beneath them. here's how i see it... either they clean up their act, or forever remain pariahs, traitors of our country. how fitting that these goons be stripped and humiliated this year of alllll the years. haha. god bless the internet.

Well, at least Malaysia isn't in the same class of countries listed in "Handbook for Bloggers and Cyber-Dissidents", so is not so bad.

Btw, Jeff, your name is in there.

I agree with you, Jeff, I mean, how does one register bloggers.

Q: Why does the Government take a negative and highly antagonistic view with regards to Bloggers? A: 1. Because they are unsure how to deal with them. To register or not? To control or not? What a dilemma for Pak Lah.
2. They perceive blogging as a threat to their supremacy of information control. The truth seems to favour the inquisitive mind and bloggers are an inquisitive lot...reminds me of a quote hung by my dad in his office 20 years ago: "Some truths are so naked that people like to cover them up..maybe just a little bit."
3. Govt can't handle the truth? Get outta the way and let BA win the election fair and square.
My suggestion: Let's have a tete-a-tete with Pak Lah and work things out. He may have formed the wrong opinion abt bloggers as a result from 'em blue boys at 4th floor in his office. The dialogue should be a no holds barred kind of thing. But I have my doubts...I'll eat my hat-shaped tosei if u ever made it happen!

Ahhh I love how the Ministers who wanted to register bloggers can't even find the proper way to do it!

Of course this paved way for the NBA and it is timely coming at a crucial juncture when the freedom of the online press is threatened.

Why try to contain the anarchaic structure in the dissemination of information on the Internet when the latter is constantly evolving? The Internet can not and can never be controlled.

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
