Ijok: Gempur... Terbilang... ( 2 )
Fallen into wrong hands, and this 500ml bottle of mineral water could be lethal weapon. Especially in Ijok

Lethal weapon... the little bottle of mineral water
Today, it was actually used by people in Pemuda BN uniform to attack my co-photographer, who was assisting me in a photo essay assignment on the Ijok by-election. His injury needed medical attention while his vision was momentarily blurred.
Our only 'sin' to deserve such bodily assault was that we had tried to be truly Malaysians.
Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, one of the candidates in the by-election, had invited us to have lunch with him at a little eatery in Simpang Ijok that served nice Malay home-cooking. Khalid and I are old friends (he reads my blog, anyway) but we seldom ate together as we obviously lead different lives.
So we grabbed the offer without hesitation, After all, it's only being very Malaysian that we Malay and Chinese friends must get to eat together whenever we could. BTW, En. Rahman, the former KeADILan candidate for Ijok and in whose home Khalid stays throughout the campaign, recommended that the sambal there was good, and the chicken was always freshly fried.
As we were finishing our lunch, Khalid was approached by a youth in Pemuda BN attire, and intimidating words were used on him soon after. Malaysiakini has a good account of the incident, titled: BN group roughs up Khalid, photographers.

We are not party to their ideological differences in partisan politics, so we steered clear of their 'conversations' and prepared to leave. Our casual attire for comfortable photographing also ensured that we are not to be wrongly mistaken as KeADILan's cadre. We were there merely as men-at-work, photographers on assignment.
We were wrong. We were surrounded by over 20 rowdies, and the long and short of it, my colleague, who wound down his window to inch carefully his way out from the besieging scene, was smashed AT CLOSE RANGE with the sharp portion of the mineral water bottle (picture above).
He tried to evade but still broke his glasses, bleeding. Without the glasses, he drove the both of us out of the danger zone until some KeADILan members escorted us in another vehicle to safe ground in Ijok town centre. (Thanks Cikgu Li.)
We kept our cool and tried hard to avert any eventualities as we didn't want this incident to be spun as an ugly chapter of over 20 Malay youths attacking two Chinese photographers in Malaysia.
Nevertheless, the unasked question must get answered some days when the fanatical election fever is over:
What wrong have we done just because Khalid decided to buy us lunch and we took up the offer?
Is this the type of culture all 14 component parties of Barisan Nasional had consented? Is this civilisational?
Is this what has become of the Malaysia we've built after 50 years?
Rocky told me something in his SMS: "My friends in Umno are concerned. I told them that they have to condemn any assault on anyone by anyone, period."
Both of us were using professional equipments for our assignment. We were lucky to fight off those who had wanted to snatch them away from us in the commotion.

The Ijok eatery was located in a public place across the fence of this building
P/S: We were quite seasoned in photography, and often times we took real good pictures. However, we have decided not to share the crime-scene pictures with the Press for now, though they had requested.
After the by-elections, perhaps.
Just perhaps.
Comments
wow!!! sorry to hear about that.
Looks like these guys don't take any prisoners. and off course KJ will say you guys started it first.
UMNO has used goons before during a get together with our ADUN about the food court and you can see who brought them there. This is a new culture in BN, MIC and UMNO take the lead. Lets not forget the cabin in Puchong, who pucnched the resident.

So anyone still thinks that UMNO has been wasting their $ to sponsor those mat rempits? The coming election will be the best time to get their ROI from the mat rempits. Welcome to the Malaysia democracy v2.0!

I heard about the incident that day. At that time I was at Bilik Gerakan PKR Simpang Ijok. They mentioned bout someone been hurt and I would never had guess that it is your fellow photographer. Sorry to hear.
Anyway what are the Pemuda UMNO's really thinking? Just last night I decided to attend a speech held by UMNO Pahang and one of the speakers was KJ himself. And he mentioned about how PKR are acting like 'samseng' during the nomination day. Well, after this incident, which he claimed he was not aware of, I hope he can revise his statement?

It was a ruthless attack on a non-violent defenseless person from a member of an uncontrolled mob. BN is real worry that Ijok is becoming just another Lunas for them. MB Selangor quickly offered (after 30 years!) Land Tiles to 482 families in squatter areas (translated perhaps to over 1000 assured votes). Even the sick IPF’s Parthiban was dragged from his Hospital Bed for a Sunday do (to get another 1000 votes). And the gall of it all, MB Selangor denied this issue of titles is “NOT a bribe to garner votes” and the UMNO Youth Chief challenge opposition to court over this “influx of “ buy-election goodies". More details & Pics at:
http://powerpresent.blogspot.com/2007/04/more-pics-goodies-in-ijok-land-titles.html
and Najib’s denial
“They raised issues not connected here. What connection has the Mongolian woman with the people in Ijok? What connection has Altantuya with the people here? There is no connection at all even with me, but it has been made into an issue. The allegations are baseless”
and PM Abdullah’s wish
“I hope this will not be a trend” -nn the violence and at all cost to win?
and AG, Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail responding to queries from newsmen on the impending court case:
“Don’t’ Assume. This is the trouble with you. I keep on telling you people, be fair, just look at the facts”

The disturbing trend of using intimidating tactics has to stop for the good of all.
Perhaps if the channels of communication are open, it may be a good idea for you to share some photos with the relevant people in UMNO.
Though some of the UMNO 'leaders' have themselves been rather active in the Ijok rowdy incidents going by photos available on several blogs and websites, I would like to think that the more sane and senior UMNO leaders would not like to see incidnets of violence get more nad more out of hand.
Perhaps they can, with the aid of the photos, those involved in this latest matter can be identified, and properly censured.
Perhaps too the use of intimidating people like the 'scorpion' folks complete with dark glasses and gangster-like demeanour will also be stopped.
If nothing else, Pak Lah must at least be made aware of what is going on, lest he has been too shielded from the grim realities of what has been done by BN leaders.
Keranamu Malaysia.

Maybe next time you cover an election, you should wear a helmet. Better still, the FRU shield.

This reminds me of a documentary which was aired in the Discovery channel not too long ago.
When threatened by the presence of hostility, people tend to act like their long-distance cousin i.e. chimpanzees. This missile-throwing incident is nothing but our inherited instinctual behavior from our ape ancestors.
I wonder if they could walk with their hands down on the polling day.

Now it is becoming oh so clear why Putra UMNO is so supportive of the Mat Rempits. These are the guys who will eventually form the backup squad should the frontline Scorpions fall. Is this what BN has down to that they have to resort to hoolinganism, bullying and violence. To Keadilan members and supporters, do not retaliate for this is exactly what they want you to do as they can now turn around that you all are the culprits and not them. This is sickening to the core.
Quite frankly, why can't the MIC candidate, like Tan Sri Khalid, invite the photographers for a lunch, a kind of goodwill gesture? Now that the damage is done, perhaps BN has already lost Ijok.

I suppose you'll keep that "offensive" weapon for the court case, Jeff. This has to go all the possible way... Someone got hurt. That's ungentlemanly behavior which is bad enough for a case. Looks like the work of hired-hands... no?

"Turun padanglah menyebabkan anda hebat"
TAHNIAH & TERIMA KASIH.

It is definitely sad to see violence being used.
This has to come down all the way from the Pemuda leaders condemning this disgraceful, inhumane and lack of self-respect irresponsible act.
However, did we hear anything from the leaders ? Silent ?
For Ijokian... you may be one of the ADUN but definitely you are most important who will determine the future of what is tolerable can lead the way to show that violence is NOT tolerated and definitely not a cultural of Malaysia. You know where to cast the votes if "silent" is what you hear.
P/S - does this have to do with the brandishing of the Keris...

Hi Jeff, again,
Sorry I just read this, so please dismiss my earlier question.
This is definitely the culture you are going to get when your leader goes around brandishing a keris.
BTW, spare us the sordid details as we don't want any copycats to repeat the same shameful treatment on you on your next trip. We all know what BN is capable of.
