Ijok Ceramah: 14-day notice required in 9-day campaigning?

Does it take 14 days to apply for a police permit to hold a ceramah during a by-election? If that's true, how do you apply for one when there are only 9 days of campaigning?

This issue cropped up in the Ijok by-election amidst allegations that the Opposition's ceramahs were cancelled by the authority for being too close to functions that DPM Najib made an appearance.

Quote Malaysiakini:

PKR Youth leader and lawyer Latheefa Koya said the Election Offences Act does not stipulate any such rule and the matter fell under the Police Act.

“However, it will be hard for both parties to follow the normal procedure (under the Police Act) of getting a police permit because that will affect our election campaign.

“If we only have nine days of campaigning, how can we meet the 14-day advance notice to make an application?” she asked.

“In that sense, we are curious how BN got their permit? Is there an ‘instant permit’?” she said, adding that the practice had been for political parties to inform the police in advance of their campaigning activities.

Latheefa also claimed that she was told by the Kuala Selangor police chief that the PKR ‘ceramah’ were cancelled because they were too close to Najib’s functions.

This is another new twist – the end justifying the means in trying to stop the opposition from influencing the voters. It has dawned upon the BN that this Ijok seat is fast slipping away with the passing of Sivalingam. In every election on record the BN has abused the government machineries and facilities and use them in furthering the interest of BN. The use of the Police to disrupt ceremahs without permit is the tip of the iceberg. A “police source” was also used to quash rumors that the 4 year old kid of the murdered Altantuya is not fathered by any Malaysians in response to the hammering of this point in Ijok.
And the latest - Abuse of Airtime over TV1 5.00 pm Berita Negeri News by the MIC President on Monday 23rd April 2007. He was caught “red handed” – a recorded 3 mins 5.38 s video clip of his desperate campaign attempt to introduce the candidate and announcing more goodies (a highway from Selayang to Ijok and Ijok to Assam Jawa) in a veiled political MIC initiated campaign (of course with the blessing of Zam, the Info Minister) under the guise of “lintas langsung dari Ijok” – (live telecast from Ijok). -an exclusive documented evidence you don't find in any blog or in the print media
PKR should demand a similar airtime as compensation.

So Polis DiRaja Malaysia are now just another cog in the BN election machinery. How sad...The OCPD probably had to act according to BN directions, otherwise his next posting will be as OCPD somewhere in the Interior of Sarawak.

Why did they need to stop the ceramah cos Najib is speaking nearby? Are police afraid they can't control the situation thus not capable to their job? Or BN is takut and not so Jantan after all? Will the police stop BN ceramah if Anwar is talking close by?

This is not an election SOP and starts a precedent we have never seen in Malaysia.Maybe this is the Telus that Pak Lah promised us. A sad day cos Malaysians are now not allowed a choice in what they can hear during an election.

PDRM you are under the patronage of the King and service to rakyat, not BN!!!

The Along, The Thug and The Mat Rempit...the malaysia is ending soon

cannot count oso ah...... 9-14 = -5

and why is BN's ceramah not ban for being too close to PKR?

aiyo, one sided affair.

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
