Please give her some light, give her some hope

UPDATED VERSION. Little Siti Aisya Syazreen Shahidan is special compared with most children.

Hayati and the apple of her eye: her precious Aisya. The little girl underwent
an operation recently to create eyelids for her left eye.

She was born with the extremely rare condition known as Fraser Syndrome: her eyelids are completely fused together, her fingers are webbed, her hearing is impaired and her larynx partially shut.

Her story was carried by The Star, last Christmas.

I was told that her family needs help in giving her adequate medical attention, urgently, though there has been some complications in the initial operations.

I am grateful that Ipoh-based blogger Daphne Ling, who volunteers her time in community service, has alerted me on her fate. Here's some update from her:

Hayati has informed me that doctors have decided no more operation for AIsya for another two years as the first operation to open eyelids for her 'backfired' (ie: the lids fused back together)... To create eyelids for her, doctors used tissue from her lips, and since she is so tiny, re-doing the operation will be difficult on her body and lips.

At the moment, donations will help keep the family together while dad looks for a job. Their average expenses a month for Aisya's basic needs is about RM 400-500.

Could you please post a short comment on your blog that all those who want to be updated on Aisya and the donations can kindly leave a comment (on my blog: http://daphneling.blogspot.com) with link to their blog/email so I can keep them informed.

I'm a college student (just turned 21!!!!) so easier (and cheaper ar) for me to keep in touch with Aisya's 'fans' through the net.

I was wondering if you could spend some time reading Siti's story in The Star, here, and start a little campaign in your workplace to being her some hope.

Many thanks, my friends.

In the good old days, those with terminal illness and borned deformed would be cared for in government hospitals.
In the age of privatisation, we can see that the rakyat have been neglected. There are people, old people, who cannot afford treatement for heart or cancer and are waiting for their fateful meeting with their creator. Their siblings are no use either as they are struggling to feed their family with their meagre income.
Some of the money that was used to buy the private jet or building another RM400million palace (there is already one palace for kings at putrajaya) could have been utilised for a more humane purpose.

So when are the people going to realize a real National Health Policy is going to eliminate all this "ugency".

Thanks, Jeff & Daphne for highlighting the case. I shall do my bit to help out.

These are the people very much forgotten by the govt. And we would only see the reps or politicians only when they make their round to make donations and to have their faces published in the govt's official mouthpiece.

I'm not sure how much have those Tsunami funds benefit the victims. There's not much transparency. And I have a feeling perhaps as much as 80% of the donations went to administrative causes.

Better to give direct to the source who needs it or support movements like Tzu Chyi which is very transparent.

31st March 2007 is deadline for registering as voter before electorate roll closes. WHY IS THIS NOT HIGHLIGHTED IN NEWSPAPERS?

For fear of backlash?

I've done my bit to inform friends.

Either we do our bit, or hold our peace.

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
