Karamjit... pity but we salute you!

Now is what.... Evo IX?

Dear Karamjit, I pity that you still have to drive an old-shack Lancer Evo III, and to get a last-minute sponsor before you can race again.

But I salute you because you have made a successful return to the Felda AAM Malaysian Rally Championships by winning the opening round in Bahau on Sunday.

You have proved your worth as the top Malaysian rally driver, yet again, by taking a 12-second victory over younger racers with newer cars.

We understand that you still have to push harder to raise money to enable you compete in the remaining four rounds of the championships.

We should thank Knight Capital, ALPS Freight and Logistics, and Silverstone tyres for sponsoring you in the opening round..

Karam, we hope that you will be released from your contractual encumbrances with your past sponsors, who don't really seem to be bothered with your winning on straight records. We hope they, if they still exist, will let you get your sponsors more freely, so that you could concentrate on the rally instead of distracting you in finding those sponsorships.

For us, Karam, you are one of our treasured Malaysian sons who has made us proud in the motorsports arena, years after years, with scarce resources.

Fellow Malaysians, let's rally to Karamjit's support before he fades away as a forgotten, foresaken hero.

P/S: We understand we have to honour our badminton aces as national heroes when they return home today. And like herd mentality usually has it, racquets are now selling like hot cakes. We have seen it all before, haven't we?

dear karam,

seeing you around PJ and all, it never fails to amaze me how simple you keep things. little do people know that when they walk next to you, they're walking amongst motorsport royalty.

either way, you're really the pride of true malaysians. it's unfortunate that the bumbling government, sports minister and all, fail to realize the impact motorsport can have on this country and it's economy. but that's how it is la, jaguh kampung merits higher accolades in this land of ours. failures are louded, but real success is hushed for reasons all too well known to us. why the government can't support a motorsport champ is really beyond me. instead they choose to reward cage swimmers, assisted sailors and illegal bikers.

we wish you all the best, mr.singh. i've seen you drive up close, and "kencang" is not strong enough a word to describe your talent and driving skills. may you continue to add to that trophy cabinet of yours.

i can't help thinking what you can do in an Impreza or a Focus and how you should have been there in the WRC circuit along side the big guns of rallying. yup, this guy is actually that damngood. trust me... but yea, shite happens to the best of em, eh?

how the effing gomen can pass up the chance to have the Malaysian flag on a WRC car year after year is really something. busy scratching balls la, that's why.

Karamjit together with his co-driver Allen has definitely achieved much for the local rally scene, and also gone on to do malaysia proud by winning a world championship.

but lets also not forget the countless drivers and co-drivers we have locally, with talent, but do not have the resources or financial ability to show what they are capable of and break out of the local scene. If sponsorship for Karam is scarce, it is a lot worse for your regular "privateer". Many have been racing locally out of passion for the sport with their own money with zero recognition.

"by taking a 12-second victory over younger racers with newer cars."
Jeff, I can't agree with your statement above. If you know the local rally scene, its made up of almost 80% local privateers with very little money driving old and tired cars. With the exception of big money teams like perodua(no match for even an old mitsubishi rally car), and 1 or 2 other individuals.

Cheh, like that only, our mat rempit can do much better than this singh(THAT is why the government are rewarding them with new motorbikes(if they catch X number of thieves), organizing their [ DELETED ] fests and sponsoring their north pole trip.)

Karamjit,

Here's wishing you all the best and good luck in everything you do! May success be with you, always!

Best wishes to your family as well.

regards,
Lance

Nice of you to bring up Karamjit article here.

Its indeed sad to see the true sportman like Karamjit having to struggle to participate in the sport that he excel. Seeing how much $$$ is wasted on our football team, i can't understand why there is no sponsor for him.

The G have always been promoting motorsport in this country and ask any motorhead and who dunno who Karamjit is and yet the establishment don't give 2 hoot with his plight.

this may be a long short but what if we wanna help? anyone have any idea how to channel (even a few dollar) to help him?

Hi Karam,

For your own career future in rally sports, you should consider migrate to USA. Evo IX cost around RM110K (after conversion around USD 30K) in USA while it costs us almost RM300K in "bodohland". Don't worry if anyone call you unpatriotic, it's just a logical choice. Lots of Malaysian made their names after leaving this land (& never comes back), so should you.

Nicole David, Karamjit and other none-bumi share the same fate..... what to do?

talking about Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong really angers you. Remember Hafiz Hashim FLUKE win in All England? the government gave him lands and USD10,000. now? KKK-TBH ended malaysia 36 years wait for a badminton doubles gold medal...and ended malaysia 25 years wait for an all england doubles gold..they did it..and guess what?? NO REWARDS!! JUST KEEP ON WORKING HARD!! HAR HAR HAR... and to add salt to wound..their win is not a fluke...they were in 6 tournaments..won 4 of them.. semi finalist in one..and finalist in the other one...

Why is Karamjit Singh almost always in this predicament when he has already shown his full worth to the sporting world? I'd have thought that by now the sports ministry would have swallowed their pride and gone and done the right thing. Seriously, its such bad publicity for the country. This fiasco only serves to generate discontent amongst Malaysians. Man, it boils to know and see other not-so accomplished sports personalities and disciplines being the beneficiary of public funds while our dear WRC champ is on the front pages for the wrong reason. Shame on those who can help Karamjit but just won't.

it's sad but [ DELETED ] discrimination is pervalent even in the face of spectacular achievements. I work in sports marketing and a long while back we were helping Nicol's dad to get sponsors. almost all turned us down with almost the same response - squash is not popular, Nicol is NOT bumi or chinese and she's a female so that made her a minority among minorities in their eyes. I admit i only was seeing middle managers at that time so they were bound by company policy on getting the best value for their ad spend. I would like to think CEOs and company owners will step forward to make Karam and Nicol's sacrifices worth while.

Soon, these outstanding athletes will end up playing for other countries. When they win championships, other countries' anthems will be played. Malaysian...pity but we salute you.
