FRU arresting peaceful protestors violently

Minister threatening to jail those who revealed the government's dirty deals

Special Branch officers raiding opposition leader's office

Don't you like their 'efficiency' in launching such multi-angles attack? If only they can apply it on improving the country...

I heard on the radio (MY FM) that the gomen has declared the toll concessions agreement is now protected under the Official Secrets Act !
Of course I could not find this piece of shocking news in the Star !
Looks like whenever things get hot its best swept under the OSA carpet ! But seriously people its an open secret what this is trying to cover isn't it ?
Very glad that LDP's takings has dropped since the toll was raised and yes I don't use LDP to go to and from work anymore and each time I do that I feel a sense of satisfaction of not bending over to be s***-ed by these Rent Seekers as I only need to start 10 mins earlier everyday !

Apologies clicked too many times as to why I cant tell as its also an Official Secret !.......solly solly ah!

democracy? yeah right!!

we need to vote wisely in the next GE.

but sometimes when $$$ is involved...it's a bit tough

I wonder if the treasured son of Malaysia, TDM, deem fit to take time out from his International-level posing to comment on this. The mutation of the Official Secrets Act from a law to protect security secrets to a cover-all blanket for ANY government document was Dr.Mahathir's brainchild.

JEFF OOI says: OSA has just been applied to cover the toll concession agreement, albeit post-humously, and the whistle-blowers have just been interrogated. Don't you think Mahathir is vindicated by the present administration, which had wanted prove to you that it's doing things differently from Mahathir's era? His brainchild now has a new foster father!

boycotting tolls to inflict losses for these operators?

so if they make losses, govt need to compensate?

Did they search wikileaks.org also?

AAB, we work with you leh..where to raid next? Just let us know, we do the dirty job for you.
Ya, work with you..to hell with msia!

groo:

I think that you misinterpreted the compensation method. The government pays to the highway company everytime you use the highway. So if you use less, they pay less.

Anyway, that's just what I 'guessed'. I never see any OSA documents lah, don't catch me ah.

Looks like Malaysia Govt is back in business after a 3-year vacation....

greetings kittykat46,

similarly, just because one is a lesser thief/corrupt than the previous one as many would like to attest to between these figues, a thief is still a thief.

you can't have a plea to the judge saying that :-

"OH BY THE WAY, I should not be held more accountable than the previous administration since the previous figurehead stole more than what I could have appropriated from the masses"

Call a spade a spade. PERIOD.

can see how protective some so called freedom of expression advocates are now turning their back when it comes to their own self..

anyway, yes, it was the fualt of the treasured son of malaysia. He created the sysstem where ministers and governments can cover their tracks of corruption by law.
its him who headed the government at that time, simply saying he forgot, or that ministers including him are not smart intelligent enough for all matters doesnt relieve him from his responsibility./

JEFF OOI says: And the old stories go on and on and on and on...?

Mahathir vindicated with regards his statements about Pak Lah's administration's shortcomings? Can't argue with you there!

"His brainchild now has a new foster father!"? Can't argue with you there either! Glad you concur with the notion that the application of the OSA to cover the toll concession agreement - viewed as abuse of the OSA by many - is his (Dr M's) brainchild.

JEFF OOI says: So, I say that the vindication for Mahathir as he inherited it from the British's OSA 1911 almost in toto. No?

Mohd Ezam Mohd Nor, a former detainee under OSA, today launched his new book: "Freedom of Information in Malaysia" in front of Bukit Aman. He said during Mahathir's time, only one victim came down under OSA (it was him), but during this administration, OSA was used to investigate four persons over the toll concession agreement.

So, someone is super-vindicated somewhere! And there's a tomcat somewhere still saying we don't learn from history? Pooh!

Very easy way out. If cannot answer questions raised by the rakyat, just use OSA to shut us out?????

It looks more like someone in the Govt decided to building a concrete wall across the goal post when it is dangerously about to concede a goal....thks to the brilliant forwards of the anti-toll protest together with the magnificient mid-fielders of bloggers.

Keep up the good work...heh heh heh...

Till then...G'nite M'sia...wherever u are...

Hi Friends,
I hope it hasn't been misconstrued that I'm a Sleepy Dollah supporter - far from it. I was trying to remind our audience some history, in the midst of the Love Mahathir festival in the PWTC right now.

JEFF OOI says: "Love Mahathir festival"? Such generalised framing, a common trait in Malaysia nowadays, is a prejudice that rudely insulted peace lovers and casulties of the Iraqi invasion.

True, the Official Secrets Act was inherited from the British 1911 law. But the 1986 amendment cast a much wider net on the application of the act, and gave much stronger mandatory penalties to it.
The web-document below is in Bahasa, clearly defines in Dr. Mahathir's own words the amendments to the act 1986.

http://www.pmo.gov.my/WebNotesApp/PastPM.nsf/a310590c7cafaaae48256db4001773ea/c1dfbd3356ff33924825674a00130013?OpenDocument.

Prior to 1986, a document like the toll agreement could have been successfully defended in court as irrelevant to national security. Not any more - the 1986 Mahathir amendment provides absolute authority to the Minister to classify what is an OSA document, hence Semi-Value can now proceed with his case with ease.

JEFF OOI says: It was this blogger who pointed out the chronological facts and DNA of ISA inherited from the British governance of 1911. It is also this this blogger who has pointed out that the present administration is but sustaining the OSA and made Mahathir so much more vindicated. If the 22 years of Mahathir (1981-2003) was bad, how better are we today? All things change and everything remains the same? That's the slogan used by MTV-lah!

My understanding is that during the tenure of Dr. M, nobody is brave enough to splurge contents of OSA documents except for one brave soul.

JEFF OOI says: And now we have, not one, but four persons being investigated over the LDP toll concession agreement details by invoking the OSA. That's quite an improvement over the past!

I can see one big difference between the present and the former administrations. The former build the country with foreign investments. The present build the country with your hard earned money!

A trait of Malaysia and its people, which has been festering for so long now, is that Malaysians have mostly chosen to do the easy, convenient or hassle free thing, as opposed to the right thing. If everyone stopped to think about what is the right thing to do in any given situation and proceeds to do it, Malaysia would be a much better place today. The police has long stopped thinking for itself. It does what its masters tell it to, without thinking about whether that is the right thing to do. Over time, they have become conditioned to stop thinking about what is the right thing to do in any given situation. Is it right to treat demonstrators of unfair toll increases in a harsh, even violent way? They either didnt think about this question, simple though it may have sounded, or think it irrelevant as it misconceived its role to be carrying out the instructions of the Minister. God bless Malaysia.

i kinda like the idea put forward by one of the commenters

"My understanding is that during the tenure of Dr. M, nobody is brave enough to splurge contents of OSA documents except for one brave soul."

true, it was such an era that Jeff, were you to speak against Tun openly you're the enemy of the state. It was an iron-fist administration.

Not saying PakLah doing any better, but you can't deny that there seems to be more voices allowed to be aired of ppl complaining about the Gov of the day. in that sense, yes we are better.

but only in that sense :p

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
