No such thing as Malay bloggers... or Chinese Bloggers

We are Malaysian Bloggers. We blog for Malaysia.

So, I have to thank those 'jaga periuk nasi' politicians who had advised me, mostly through third parties, to lay off topics that relate to issues on governance, and inadvertently, the politics that contradict this administration from the previous one.

This year, you see, I received the Lunar New Year greetings in SMS and emails from an awful lot more from Malay friends whom I never got to connect with before. They treat me like their brother. Real brother.

There's a silver lining in the dark cloud, so that say. The defamation suits that Rocky and I were made to face, and that made us walk together, had made readers see me in different light. There are two mainstream newspapers which tried hard in their editors' columns to portray this blogger as a racist. But my Malay and Indian friends see me differently. They see this blogger as an Anak Malaysia.

From their out-of-the-blue emails and SMS, I can feel they have largely regarded me as a Joe Public who blogs for Malaysia, for Malaysians.

Breaking free

This is understandable. Internet is now the common language for people who have broken free from the grasp of mainstream media. Those who now read online have started to discard the print and free-to-air TVs, and switch over to the New Media. They now formulate their own opinion and insulate themselves from the influence of the spin-doctors. They now shout back when statistics are used to slant perspectives. They are now well educated enough to read economic figures and indicators in their real-life implications on the country's fiscal health than to get their thoughts sold wholesale.

For example, to the Internet citizen, the 2006 Magic Trillion trade volume is the aggregate when you add the value of exports at RM588.949 billion to RM480.493 billion of imports. In real sense, it merely denotes an effective value-added of RM108.456 billion if you take the value of exports at RM588.949 billion, MINUS RM480.493 billion of imports. When the net value-added is worth a mere RM108 billion, how could they possibly justify all that RM1 trillion we don't all own to buy us x-numbers of super airports and x-numbers of mega projects?

Faced with the shameless spins, even anonymous bloggers are capable of asking the right question: How much of this RM108 billion of value-added is parked overseas, or repatriated to the coffers of the overseas global headquarters of the Malaysia-based SBUs of the electrical and electronic industry (E&E) and semiconductor giants?

To those 'jaga periuk nasi' politicians, I want to remind them that these are not Malay issues. These is Malaysian malaise that affects each and every Malaysian.

Sit up and take heed

Hence, when Malay bloggers like A Kadir Jasin, Ruhanie Ahmad and Rocky's Bru start to put the latest bloopers in context, you better sit up and take heed. Mind you, they are all former journalists attached to mainstream media directly and/or indirectly owned by Umno.

In a no-nonsense manner, they are touching on a common sense issue that relates to every Joe Public.

They are asking how justify this kind of modern day governance, that ( A ) it's not expensive to buy a RM200 million belon -- minus the recurring MRO expenditure -- if only to serve a select group of people, and that ( B ) it's too expensive to sustain a RM100 million school textbook project that will benefit thousands of low-income parents?

The latest twin-bloopers happened concurrently on February 18, the first day of the Year of the Boar. ( A ) Read this Bernama story on the robust economy and development agenda, and ( B ) read this Bernama special feature on why there will not be subsidised textbooks for the primary and secondary school children.

Since when has education and related aids been classified as not an development agenda during robust economy>

Again, let me tell you this, these are not issues specifically for the Malay bloggers, and for that matter, Malay bloggers who have been blogging for less than one calendar year!

Should we blog, we blog for Malaysia. And be proud of what we do.

greetings jeff,

invariably, whilst some of these politicians would like people to very much criticize less of the current administration, the problem is they should first focus on the image they are portraying to the outside world.

If it is a malaysian blog, then will then say it is racist because it comes from either the dominant race or the secondary largest race. This is how the race-based game is still being played.

However, at the international level, we are quickly losing face.

Perhaps politicians should be given this cue first to tackle it before going about telling malaysian bloggers to critize less / no criticisms at all.

Malaysia has suddenly for the past few years being heralded as a currently of U-TURNS/Oreo government by foreigners !

1. Build new causeway - suddenly u-turned saying no -new Causeway.

2. Announce Myvi lucky draw and suddenly make u-turn saying no-Myvi for Mykad applicants.

3. Announce free text books and suddenly make u-turns saying no-free text books.

When being quizzed by foreign friends/classmates, I felt ashamed for not able to answer them why the authorities would like to make announcements/decisions which they would like to u-turn when something goes wrong.

If there is a popular saying like THINK B4 YOU THROW or THINK AND NOT DRINK IF DRIVING, perhaps before trumpeting about the grandeur and such, think twice before announcing the decision so it will save people and the government the heartache/fiasco for the embarrassment later.

It is not the PM's fault for the many u-turns if this is what he would like to hear but the government ought to own up to the fault if it keeps making u-turns not once but again and again.

The ladies and gentleman politicians should learn and accept that it is normal to be critizised. This is normal in any democratic process anywhere in the world except Malaysia!
Furthermore i would like to see politicians interviewed on tv WITHOUT giving them the questions ons forehand. They should be roasted and if they don't have the proper answers than they make a fool of themselves, also this is democraty.
Not the democraty that Jozef Goebbels from Merbok wants to see on tv....
Playing the racial card just makes a fool out of these people.

This kutu:

Betui! 100 peratus betui! aku tak rasa pun hang ni Cina! Kalau Bro rasa saya ni Melayu, itu bukan urusan saya. Yang penting, apa yang saya rasa. i want to change this world from within my heart. If i cant change others, i'll change myself first.

kutu:

Should i say go to hell with Malay interests just because i dont want to look racist? Go ahead, fight for anything you want. As long as we remember, we have other people's feeling to consider.

Jeff:

kutu:

Because they are damn sure we are as stupid as they are (not an astute...)

Gong Xi Fa Cai to you, Jeff.

I fully agree with you, we blog for Malaysia!

I guess to instill the true Malaysian spirit, we all have to start somewhere & if blogging is the way - so be it! Happy Chinese New Year Jeff & may u mark yet another milestone in the field of true journalism!

‘‘Itu (harta) adalah hak ahli keluarga saya, tak payahlah saya umumkan harta yang mereka miliki,’’

That sums up his hak. What about hak-hak rakyat jelata? The government is fully responsible to protect the rakyat. See you at the poll.

firstly, let me wish u ,Mr Jeff Ooi and family A Very Happy Chinese New Year.
Jeff, I read some where( I think in Malaysiatoday ) that u are a normal member of Party Gerakan .Do u have any aspiration to be enter politics , maybe join the opposition ? maybe as a candidate for the coming General Election?
Read that blogger Tony Pua was given post as an economic adviser to the Dap Secretary General. wow, that would be great for Dap ad Tony Pua is a very intelligent guy and have many great ideas.
How about u , Jeff? U too I am sure have a lot to contribute towards making Malaysia great again.

Among us, Bloggers United, we may differ on many issues but this one cause will be that bridge that allows us to unite and communicate with one another.

Arguing and criticism have limited success. Rather than the usual "killing of the messenger" by our politicians, we - the people will listen to one another. Its the understanding to each others' problems and predicaments that will shorten the bridge between us.

Wish you and everyone Happy and Prosperous New Year. I enjoy reading your blog and rarely read Star and never NST. Wish you best of luck in your coming court case with NST. Never heard of newspaper suing ordinary people for defamation. For our sake keep on blogging and may the government listen to its citizen. Malaysia day by day is drifting away from it's democratic principles and behave more like China. Unfortunately the economy is unlike China.

If someone is to ask where is the intellectual presence, ferment and force of the Malay community in this country, point them to the Malay bloggers.

Yes, this growing group of highly intelligent, perceptive and articulate people from the Rakyat is making waves and sounding the most cogent clarion call for change.

Any progressive and forward-looking government that serves the true interest of the Rakyat would fall on its knees and be thankful that on their own accord and by their own initiative and sacrifice, they are rising to make their say on important matters affecting everyone.

That this umno govt can only ummh-no its posture towards this new wave may perhaps be attributed to its being non-progressive and backward-looking.

That says as much, for if many of these bloggers were once establishment and mainstream, their thoughts should be even more appreciated.

People don't write on issues unless they see and know something is wrong.

One hopes that many more from the Malay fraternity and intelligentsia will write more exposures, for when they write with their signature reasonableness and balance, the race element disappears on its own.

We are Family. (sung to some rapper thingey).

Happy CNY Jeff,

Blog on Jeff.
I'm Malay. If Malay leaders can't fight for the poor of their own race, why shouldn't they rely on the others who are ever willing to fight for them?
This "jaga periuk nasi" politicians only jaga their family's "tembolok".
