Good times? Reuters calls it Putrajaya spin
So, good times are back huh?
Last week, you have been hearing a series of feel-good news in the mainstream media. The ' healthy' economy indicators (minus the national debts figures). The yet-to-be-confirmed 5.8% GDP growth for 2006. And the so-called 'magic trillion' trade volume in 2006.
All these did not escape the probing eyes of the wire agencies. Look at the Reuters headline in a story filed its KL-based correspondent Jalil Hamid. It reads: Malaysian spin on economy sparks poll talk.
It's too late for the Putrajaya boys to press on active denial mode as the news item has been picked up by Reuters' subscribers the world over, and permanently indexed by Google.
Who ordered the spin? Apparently, some editors had attended a government briefing and you get all the news that matter. Reuters offers a clue:
More such stories are on the cards, said one editor, who attended a government briefing recently.
Why such a spin? Reuters offers another clue:
The PR drive and promises of higher spending on state projects could help Abdullah fend off challenges posed by two big thorns in his side -- bloggers and his outspoken old boss, Mahathir Mohamad.
The former premier has called Abdullah's government "gutless", giving vent to a host of bloggers who have often targeted Abdullah personally, accusing him of pampering himself while raising living costs.
"The PM is now on the offensive," said one media strategist who advises several ministers. "With the feel good factor, Mahathir will have no or the slightest impact on voters."
Read the Reuters story here. Just don't ask me for a counter-spin.

More spins today. Check out the frontpages of 'the press which advocates responsible blogging' where the Fat Lady sings even louder despite Indon surpassed us in FDIs.
And interestingly, The People's Paper is very late in updating their website today. Wong kena sound again from someone for publishing an embarassing frontpage for Radzi (and Chan KC)?

Howsy,
Good point. What most people miss and definitely the Government won't tell is how much did our competitors' (ie, SG, Indo, Vietnam, Thailand, etc) FDI increase. If you ask me an increase of little over 5% year over year is just trendline growth and nothing great. But I'm no economist.

You guys got the wrong idea. All the good news is not for the coming general elections. It is to prop up the share market for Khazanah's benefit.
Plenty of Hot money from hedge funds coming in, as they can borrow yen cheaply (near zero inetrest and falling yen value) and deposit in our banks and stocks for a profit(due to ringgit appreciating and higher returns).
Once a certain limit is achieved, Khazanah will cash out its excess baggage from mahathir's era prefferably timing it to just before hedge funds doing the same. It will be something like 1997, only milder.

I dunno why am I still reading The Star knowing they can sell out in such fashion.
Wait, I guess it's the same reason people still vote for BN knowing they can be corrupted in such fashion.

Well, like the rest of you here, I am up to my eyeballs with frustration and utter disappointment with the current Govt. All I read is plenty of BS from the Govt and Mr.Task Force aka AAB. I will vote for the opposition too. Not only that. I will also persuade friends and acquaintances to do so. It is about time that this Mickey Mouse Govt be taught some kinda lesson.

with our without an opposition alliance, if we just vote opposition, and the incumbent BN just win by a whisker, just like Najib in Pekan..it will humble those bast**rds and take voters seriously.
Imagine Ong Ka Ting just winning by 20 votes even if he is challenged by an unknown, we still vote opposition...his MCA will vote him out at MCA Assembly. Simple.
How many are prepared to vote this way.?

jonwon,
I am with u. We REALLY need a strong AND intelligent (PAS ruled out here) opposition alliance to oust all the imbeciles in the BN govt. Whether they can get their act together in time is a BIG question mark.
All the pakciks and makciks will still "pangkah dacing" on election day and there must be a good strategy to prevent this from happening.

jeff: if you read the article closely, reuters actually said that "Despite the government spin, the real economic picture is not that rosy and Abdullah's promises of reform remain largely unfulfilled, critics say."
I bolded the "critics say" as Reuters were merely reporting that the "critics" claimed that it was a spin.
This is enforced in the first line of the intro of the piece: "Malaysia's media has been trumpeting good news about the economy, and that is stoking speculation of an early election this year"
I don't think that Reuters is claiming that the papers are spinning. They're just reporting that critics are saying it.
But I must admit that the headline is kinda misleading. If I was Jalil I wud have written "Critics Say Malaysia Spin on Economy Sparks off Poll Talk" but it'd take too many lines.
Oh well, that's my two cents trying to bring a douse of rality back to this post... ;)
JEFF OOI says: Perhaps we should pass the hat around to send you for a crash course on "Journalism is dead. Long live the journalist". :-)

CNY is approaching,
the spending tendency of biggest spender community will tell you the real picture.
I patron 1utama, Sunway Pyramid often, and the atmosphere there tell me that it is calmer than previous year.

The economy is good? Ask the ordinary folks, they find they have less 'wang' in their pockets being sucked up by increased fuel price, toll hikes, inflated prices and government spending wastage. Too many rent seekers and too many baggers causing the load to be heavier. Don't be too happy with a highly specilative bourse, everything looks artificial. The end result will be big fishes swallowing up the ikan bilis... it is a lesson that is never learned over the decades in this country. The make belief and the spins on good time. I agree with kendo that there is nothing to shout about when one visits 1 Utama or Sunway, it looks the same like any other day and we are supposed to be in festive mood just days before CNY... it is rather dull, I have yet to see a frantic buying spree during the last few days left before CNY.......And I do not think going to the poll is in the pipeline, it will cost a lot of votes running away from BN and it is common among converstion nowadays that this BN government is leading this country up the tree...and back to the third world scenario whilst others are moving fast in the Asean context! If this government continue to be in a make-belief world whilst other Asean countries move on, then we deserve to be marching in the march of follies!

Your logic confuses me. How is voting someone in 'by a whisker' going to get their party to dump them as leader? Your example of Najib immediately squashes your argument... He won by a whisker. Does he look like a man humbled to you? This is the guy who may well be the next PM. He doesn't seem to have been reduced in power by anyone, least of all his party; unless I'm reading from a different page in the book from yours!

lltwigs,
In our eyes Najib may not seem humbled, but he was campaigning like hell in Batu Talam altho winning the seat was a foregone conclusion. If Najib had not done done well in Bt Talam, AAB"s team will use this against him. Do you really think Najib is sitting easy with the KJs hanging around.
If we don't start putting our vote for the opposition..when will we.? Wait another 22 years?
