Chun Wai on blogger's power hurting us in Indonesia

UPDATED VERSION. The second time in two months, The Star's Wong Chun Wai again reiterated the power of bloggers reporting truthfully on the bureaucratic delivery system in the Abdullah Administration:

It must be taken seriously because her complaints have made its rounds among Jakarta’s press fraternity and bloggers who have become a new but important and powerful alternative media source.

Jakarta? Melancong Yuk broadcast journalist Nila Tanzil, who also blogs on nilatanzil.blogspot.com, has used her blog to report on the sloppy-floppy work of the Tourism Malaysia folks in Seberang.

The thing is, Nila Tanzil's unpleasant experience in Malaysia did not happen last night. Ong Hock Chuan, a Malaysian blogger based in Jakarta, had Unspun it on February 13, thirteen days ahead of Chun Wai.

So, soon after Chun Wai's copy appeared in The Star this morning, Unspun took time to recap the whole issue. Apparently, our tourism guys in Jakarta had allowed the debacle to brew and blow up. Nila Tanzil has since lost her TV host freelance assignment.

Mind you, Nila Tanzil is a double knock-out. She has a personal blog and a corporate blog to sing about Tourism Malaysia in Indonesia.

It's a pity that Ms Tanzil seems to have had a much more interesting time in Singapore in November last year.

It seems that Spore has so much more to offer the tourist than KL has - dining options, shopping, clubbing etc. Plus a great public transport system and a safe, secure environment.

I hope that the Msian tourism people are reading this blog.

Tourism Malaysia should not be singled out for sloppy work. I think it goes wiht every ministry in this country.
Whenever there is a campaign etc etc. everybody is there to take pictures with the big shots gracing the launch..Then they go home and live hapiily ever after.

No one does any work.....and if things go wrong, finger pointing is the next solution.

little napoleons seems to be ruling this country with its bureaucracy and red-tapes.

If the officials could not undertake such task, why bother to invite foreign press when they are being given ample opportunity to promote the country when it is free publicity for malaysia ?

pak lah and the relevant ministers/bodies ought to ask these i*iots to show cause as to why they should not be dismissed for such embarassing episodes for marring the country's image .

The fact is that Malaysian do not know how to converse in proper malay. So when confronted with indonesians, they normally reply in english in order to prevent embarrasment. This non-ability to speak proper malay is evident in parliament when when bad manners is reffered to as kurang ajar instead of kurang sopan(idonesian term).
Then you add the work culture mentality of our bereaucrats( evry decison must be done by many groups of people attending many meetings), and our slave environment where everything is considered OSA material, you should be thankful that it takes two weeks for a letter. Normally when they promise two weeks, it means two bloody months if you are lucky.

Again they saw one tree (the floral festival) and miss the woods (foreigners promoting Malaysia). This is 2007 and yet that happened? Don't they have a checklist? What's so difficult about (a) spending money to promote the country, and (b) making a few phonecalls in advance to sound the tour places to expect and render assistance to foreign media who would be grateful for the invites?

Silo-focus + don't-care + muddleness = screw-up

And that's the new client charter for the public service delivery that's being reviewed.

Hopefully they'll also explain what's the reason for chopping down all the trees in Jalan Gombak KL; haven't they heard of global warming?

I think that we should forget about promoting tourism overseas before we solve the public security and public transport problems. "Last time", those Malaysians staying on the trees won't rob the tourists, and tourists just need to ride some sampans to reach the forest.

Actually, I think Ms. Nila has very good, in fact excellent English. I do not think that she would be in a miscommunication situation in either English or Malay.

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
