We won't do it

Today, theSun sent three journalists -- an assistant news editor, a reporter and a photographer -- to cover the press conference jointly organised by CIJ Malaysia and WAMI. Rocky and I were their guests.

The photographer asked us to pose for a picture, and the instruction was to get us punching into the air, Reformasi-style.

Flatly, we both said: "We won't do it."

Ohh.. sounds familiar. Chinese newspaper always do such thing. Ask ministers or people rep to line up near some longkang or some complaint areas and instruct them to point their fingers to a spot.

Funny Malaysians...

What was the image they wanted you guys to project? Damn fishy

you almost step into their cunning trap.
pictures can be distorted with a few words.

Man, luckily not jostling spears or pedangs.....

see?!!!.. it's for reasons like this that we're standing behind jeff and rocky. in the eyes of the "literate", we the people have lost faith in the credibility of mainstream media. sensationalizing seems to be the first criteria when selecting issues to be highlighted. for the good of this country, we can't operate like that.

first world = first world information distribution. stringent, unreasonable control over information dessimated, pretty much translates to regimental rule.

imagine having posed for the picture, then opening the papers the next day to see a headline under the picture, "Bloggers turn boxers: rocky and jeff to compete for middlewieght crown in Madison Square Garden"

Posed photos belongs nowhere near photojournalism. How do you convince people it was candid?

This is ethically wrong. Not much different from making up a quote and attributing it to subject presented in the image. IMHO, if ever an image acquired under such circumstances is published, it would be like creating a news event that did not really happen.

A huge question mark on journalistic standards at The Sun.

Hang in there.

well at least they didn't ask you to hold a samurai sword and rocky a keris. ;)

yes... this posing thing is not good for news reports as it shows much like some publicity stunt we normally see in newspapers. the sun reporters must get more professional.

Lucia, you are funny... :-)

These The Sun's reporters really don't know what is 'shame'. I thought they should learn how to take natural photo without asking people to pose this and pose that.

Something "fishy"? "Sensationalism"? Both possible, I think.

But I won't discount the possibility of simple lack of ability or opportunity to compose an attention grabbing photo. And at the want for good ideas, resort to asking for "Reformasi" style fists in the air?

I think there are both good and bad journalists / photographers out there, and I am not talking about their skills.

I agree that having a 'fist in the air' can look bad (kudos to Jeff & Rocky ) . . . you guys have been very level headed coupled with good foresight.

But then again, I don't think we shoudl bash journalists for asking them to do so. For all you know, they just wanted a picture that sells.

I remember when I picked up my SPM results from school, there were a few local journalists there to take pictures of those who did well.

Man, they made us do some of the most rediculous poses ( pointing at the transcript, a four person handshake !! ) . . . hahahahah . . . papers got to sell . . . journalists got to eat . . no ?

What a bunch of idiots...the reporters, I mean....

maybe they wanted to check both your arm pits...He he.

Hang in there buddy.

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
