Maggie Steber coaches The Star
Yes, Maggie Steber and she was seen floating at Menara Star for one week last December!

Maggie has traveled to 40 different countries to create visual stories for all those publications. Her first book, Dancing on Fire: Photographs from Haiti, was published in 1991.

Her awards include the Ernst Haas Grant, the World Press Foundation Award, the Leica Medal of Excellence, the Oversees Press Club, the Picture of the Year awards and the Alicia Patterson Grant.
She is now a freelance photojournalist who now advises newspapers worldwide on the use of photography and graphic design. The Star is lucky to get her.
Anyway, that's what theSun, the purported 2nd largest circulation English newspaper, can't afford. Or it wouldn't if it could as can been from its 2006 track records at the graphics department. So The Star can zoom past it in 2007.
To The Star photogs and picture editors, after Romeo Gacad (2005/2006), you now get Maggie. The heat is on you if you can't show us the damn pictures!
Comments
Call me a cynic, but like many great photo advisors before her; the Star photogs are in the end, disappointed.
The problem lies in the attitude of the Editors, they are afraid to adopt sensitivity to good images. They have a fixed mind set of what type of pictures sell The Star, day in day out those are the type of pictures you see in the paper.
Look at that top picture with a hand sticking out from the right, Nat Geo used it, you think Star got the guts to? Give me a break!
When I was the Picture Editor there, we had a well known American photog giving us the “month over”. At the meeting he really spoke his mind about the attitude of editors, how good news photos were never use and guess what, I was told to tell our consultant that he is NOT WELCOME at our news meeting any more!
Mind you, I am ALL FOR photog like Maggie to guide the young photogs at The Star and believe you me there are some REAL talents there, so Mike; let see if you can change your mind set and show us you are not just getting the best consultant “because we can afford them”!
