For whom the tolls toll?... ( 9 )

I was all roving eyes as a photographer at the anti-toll protest last Sunday, and yet I missed this shot. What a shame!

Nice one. Life is not easy eh..

Children shouln't be brought to any protest anywhere. No such thing as " Kami haramkan duit kami utk tol". U use u pay. Period

nice pic :D actually great pic :D

if all malaysian are like gearstick mentality of "u use u pay" i guess mr samyy & highway toll concessionaires will smile from ear to ear. All of us know that in our life as malaysian we must pay for sooo many things which most of us dont really mind as long what we paid worth what we enjoy/use. But when people simply raised the rates that we being paying unreasonably several notch up do u think people wont get angry? Anyway gearstick, there's no such thing period in life[except for the ladies ;)], everything is just a comma for u to pause and ponder and i do hope you will pause urself and ponder before u reply.

Just admire the spirit the couple has.

Good shot, it is definitely touching.

To Gearstick:

The point is, these people were there, with or without kids, to tell the world how they feel about the injustice. They are doing their job as good citizens. We have to look at things in a much larger picture.

In some way, I can see the point of paying toll. But any public services be it hospitals, schools, libraries, roads and other transport systems ... should NOT have profit in their calculations. It should be just a token to help pay towards the services. And it should be calculated with the minimum wage in mind.

okay, gearstick.....I use I pay.....

In that case, can I stop paying my income taxes, my road taxes, my council taxes, then? I will pay them as I use their services......

I fact, why have a government at all, privateise everything, including government, we use we pay......

Toll collection should be for maintenance but I hear they pay 6 month bonus! Any truth?

Adekah TOLL itu Jajahan?

Dear gearstick,

I don't agree with you. The rakyat in east coast, who may never use highway like LDP, contributed the money indirectly (because they tax money contributed to government had to be used pay the so called 'concessionaires')

And the message by fler in picture is very clear.

Then tolls up, everything will go up, then those people who may not even own a car, will have to pay for the high price of everything else.

Who said it's "you use you pay?"

This is just not right.
The government creating more burden to the lower income family.

Instead of having better milk powder, some even need to down grade their current brand.

kids should not be used for protests.

do they have a choice but to bring along their kids? DOubt they have a nanny to take care of their kids not when they cant even afford milk with the toll hike in place. This pic speaks a thousand words and we should fwd this pic around the globe.

First of all, I disagree with gearstick and aput83 on bringing children to protest. Outsiders would feel the parents are exploiting the children. We are but outsiders.

The truth of the matter we should ask - can they afford a nanny? Living in KL to make a living, they may not even have extended families over here. Here is all very nucleic family system.

Kami HARAM kan 'RM' kami untuk Tol.

I would like to bring forth this which most of us may have missed out. These are very powerful words.

1. The couple here still pay toll. They still need to use. Hence, they use, and they pay.

2. However, the money earned by the toll concessionaires, shady shareholders and all the Yang Berhormat 10 percenters holders - this couple here kind of put a 'curse' - not exactly a curse. But is kind of like declaring it a 'sin' for these people to rob them.

Yes. They, still use, and pay.

Forced to. Can Mr Samy point out which other alternative routes can use?

People working and living in Klang Valley are already robbed of spending quality time with family with the very early to rise and late to come back to avoid jam. And now, to avoid toll perhaps by using alternative routes.

If there's any, most of the roads are ruthlessly barricaded and designed such that, going on alternative routes, we would spend more on petrol.
Penny wise, pound foolish. This will be a never-ending situation as petrol price would increase at a faster rate than toll price. What other choice than to cut down to 5 hours sleep a day?

Dread to think of what kind of productivity could be churn out of this 'living dead' situation.

Meanwhile, alll of our elected Yang Berhormat, whizzed by with patrol motorcycles opening the roadway for them.

Yes, we elected them. And Mr. Samy, Mr. Ong does not need to ride on LRT, beat the jam, and face the jam. But they do ride on the LRT once in a blue moon for a good PR coupe blasted on all government owned media for posterity purposes.

And the concessionaire holders, probably do not spend much time on the road. Reason: They own private jets. And they fly to London, Australia, all other the world to buy the biggest jewelry, latest design in fashions for their first wives, second wives and so forth.

And still got so much more left to spend in Las Vegas.

This is the live of rich and famous very very away from the prviy eyes of the rakyat. For whom, Monsoon Cup reporting of yatch ownership is just tip of the iceberg we're seeing.

Many are having their own private ranches, yatches, jets and so forth.

This has nothing to do with race or religion. But a lot to do with race and religion on the other hand - the games being played on the rakyat to fuel support for them. To have them earn more.

And if the by-election is on, the people who are closely aligned if they get any money, or benefits, are just bread crumbs compared to the private jet and lavish lifestyle these YBs are enjoying which we do not see and could only watch in Astro.

And because the cabinet knows nothing, all the time, it is best to express in picture.

this is the first time i came across somebody who does not mind a bit about paying something they shouldn't be in the first place.

irony.

anyway, yes they do pay lots of bonus. few years ago (mind you this is a few years ago..), a friend who worked for KESAS got a 3-month bonus. No price for guessing how much they get this year.

i guess samy couldnt care less what people like us said. we would still be using the highways because, face it, we have no choice!

im getting very frustrated really. will there be hope?

May I add further. Everyone in Malaysia who:

1. Buys any end finished product.
2. Owns a home
3. Buys a car (proton or non-proton)
4. Eats KFC, McDonald

- All are tax payers. Some of these money goes to pay the concessionaires based on the agreement as compensation.

Just like the cancelled scenic/crooked bridge.

Hence, I would like to say THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart to all the Pak Atan, Mak Leela, Aunty Soh, Uncle Mutu out there who may be in Kangar, Papar, Kuching, Sandakan or wherever.

A very small portion of their tax goes to subsidize my toll payment each time I pass by the LDP toll.

If not for the rest of the Malaysians, I would have been paying much higher price than the RM1.60 today.

Again, a BIG THANK YOU to you all who have yet to realize that you have been conned ... :)

gearstick:

"U use u pay"

Let's me interpret it in another scenario.

If one day you found that you/your family member is sick and you couldn't get any urgent treatment from any public hospital and the only option is private hospital. But you can't afford it, what would you think if the government tell you 'you sick, you pay lah, siapa panggil you sakit'?

The toll increase is indeed horrible and protests help get the message across.

However from the picture, it's hard to determine if the kids are being used as stage props or not. Especially in this day and age when there are so-called beggars who bring along mere babies and neglect the babies to gain sympathy.

Ah come on.. stop bashing gearstick will ya.. his opinion has been quite naive and clearly almost everybody know everybody's else opinion on toll :D.

Yes picture does describe thousands word and the picture does tell so. And I must say although I personally am not really affected by toll hike (because I am self employed and can have flexible hours and thus, can drive thru Federal Highway in non-peak hours), the toll increase is 'daylight robbery' and this clear beyond any doubt by anyone's standard.

Kesian, we have luxury to enjoy RM 88 for Stimx with our computer and we're capable of earning a few extra to pay for toll. they on the sad other hand, can't afford milk or medicine if the toll increases.

if we had a damn choice, yes, we would not use the toll at all, but they don't and HAVE to utilize toll.

funny, it seems like another MOngolian case where is slowly but surely FADING....

gearstick, i go east, TOL, i go south, TOL, i go west, TOL, i go north, TOL. if you say don't use. then you come feed me lah.

Mr Jeff,

I got another angle for this shot but not that good.

The readers can view it here - http://www.hafizismail.net/hp/?album=Anti_Toll_Hike_Protest

I would have to agree with Gearstick about bringing small kids to protest/demo. If they can't afford a nanny, look for other options if you want to participate in the demo/protest. If there is no other options, then don't participate at all. Don't bring the kids along to experience all these at their age. They have all the right to a more wholesome environment.

I know the commentators here will say they have the right to express themselves in demo/protest etc. But putting the small, innocent little kids through this? I believe they (the kids) deserve better.

Dear Gearstick I totally and utterly agree with you on u use u pay PROVIDED I am not paying income tax ,sales tax etc etc AND the toll consessionaires are transparent in its collection Plus I am convinced all these ex Gomen servants that sit as directors in these toll companies have not taken the rakyat for a ride so that they can have BIG mansions for homes,Luxury cars for transport and Money for doing nothing much except be the right fren to the people in power!

I will use and I will pay for the justifiable amount NOT to enrich RENT SEEKERS !

To everybody who are offended by my comment,

U all are taking my comment out of context.

There is no two way about it - when U pay for a service/good, u cannot say " Take my money and I hope u burn in h*ll"

Especially for Steve..

The comparison is totally out. It's like comparing apple with orange

gearstick... no one take your comment out of context.. highway is meant to ease the traffic...

HOW DO YOU JUSTIFY RIGHT AFTER PAYING TOLL, YOU ARE STUCK IN JAM AGAIN?? this is your chance to justify your claims of good service. go ahead.

Taiko Besar/Folks..

Imagine Klang Valley without all the "swasta" highway at all........

sorry, you mean pay for service/good... read wrongly...

but again...road is a necessity that the government has to provide to it's people...you can collect toll, but at least, have the interest of the rakyat in mind...

there are things that is the responsibility of the government to provide to it's people... how about the government charge you for living in malaysia??? they provide service ma...they provide a place for you to stay...

what about they charge you for walking on the street??they provide road for you to walk on ma...

my point is...certain things is the responsibility of the government to provide to it's ppl...but they take advantage of it..to make profit for their cronies and themselves...

Hi gearstick,

Perhaps you can end the matter by saying:
(1) I apologise if anyone has interpreted my message wrongly and get offended;
(2) The reporter has reported me wrongly (perhaps not so aplicable here); or
(3) I remain silent elegantly.
All the above are proven effective and guaranteed no consequence.

look at the picture again. if you followed the lensamalaysia thread, i am guessing that the children need special medical attention.

i can't think of a better way to send a strong message with so few words on the placard.

if the children are sickly, i'd say the parents are very brave to bring the children out in the open like that, especially considering the stigma we have about sickly people.

it is easy to say what should and what shouldn't be done. but i can appreciate the action taken by the parents.

we are also forgetting that the highway has already been paid for a long time ago. with only 5% of the revenue collected now goes into maintenance, where does the rest of the money go?

you'd be pissed to if i sold you ONE can of cola and asked you to pay RM13.00 everyday for the next 35 years.

or maybe it's just me. :)

now u all know why the road got so many potholes and traffic lights.

they are indirectly forcing us to use the toll. why they didnt care, cos they got police escort, so no jam even if there is....

we cant do nothing. malaysians got no balls.

thailand and indon changed their government and now they have improved their economic situation. we are competing against them and we are losing out. even vietnam is going far ahead than us.

we are just willing to see this government screw up our own lives again and again and again and again. and again.

we are going down the drain and theres nothing we can do about it.

You (toll paying citizen): "Take my money and I hope u burn in h*ll"

Concessionaire: "Thank you. Please come again, tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow... for the next 2 to 3 decades! Excuse me while I laugh all the way to the bank, and you become a virtual slave to the bank, IPPs, AP Kings, and last but not least, us!

Oh, by the way, you don't have to thank me for what you get. Thank the government you voted for. I may have taken your money, but it's your goverment who sold you out. So, don't come and lash me. If anyone were to burn in h*ll, it'd be the guy you voted into goverment. Now, drive carefully. I wouldn't want you to make a mess on my highways whenever you guys have an accident. Also, happy driving, while I'll go happy counting."

and gearstick,

just imagine the government start to send you electric bill for the street lamp in the area you are living in... i doubt you will be glad to pay the bill!

Ah! It seems so many of you are not satisfied with the government, unless I'm wrong.

BUT how many of you did go to Sunway last sunday to show your support for the anti-toll protest and most importantly, to show the government that we are not silent sheeps, we care about Malaysia and we do take action....

I saw only around a thousand plus pure protesters at the event. How sad and how disappointed!

We are not only facing a corrupted government...but we are facing a whole generation of ignorance, political-cold, tak apa attitude or NATO = no action, talk only people.

No wonder we are so easy to handle, treat you like s***, you will only bising for few weeks, and then everything back to normal.

For those who didn’t turn up, mind sharing your reasons with us? Come on, lets keep on talking cock!

Taiko besar,

They are sending u bills for the street lamps...in the form of quit rent, etc....

kwei..

we protest in our on way...not being there doesn't mean we agree to pay more..

kwei,
What you guys did is courages. However, those who didn't show up at the anti-toll hike protest does not mean we support the toll hikes itself. In fact, I advice all those who felt betrayed and cheated by the BN gomen to show them how we feel through the ballot box. Exercise your right as a voter! Please make sure you're registered, OK?

Nonetheless, the right question should be asked is "How many of you voted for BN in the last GE? Are you going to vote for them again in the coming GE?". If your answer is "YES" to both questions, then you should stop your whining. You deserve what you vote for! You wanted BN, a.k.a. Barang Naik, so why are you complaining?

guys,

The local councils mostly are appointed by BN/UMNO ppl too. So, don't be surprise that your quit rent, cukai pintu etc. also rise in tandem with everything else nowadays...

As I say before, and I wouldn't mind say it again, you get what you deserve. You wanted BN, you get BN.

gearstick,

LDP is paid off, how come we the rakyat jelata still have to continue to pay? If you say maintaining the road, why need to pay so much? where the nett profit goes? to the pocket? to the bank? or back to rakyat jelata?

In this land, as long as you are born here, you have all the RIGHTS to choose your government, and also to protest.

The parents merely bring the kids along, why can't they be there? They are not been manipulated anyway. The kids are the future "rakyat jelata", if they want to protest for this "UNJUST TOLL HIKES", why can't they?

Even the ants born in this land can protest, if only they can.

jeffdaman,

i'm not saying the kids are being manipulated. It is just a matter of principle that we should't involve kids in this kind of activities - u may disagree - I can live with that.

U said -
The kids are the future "rakyat jelata", if they want to protest for this "UNJUST TOLL HIKES", why can't they?

Hey..they are already rakyat jelata. How can u say they are only in the "future".

The only difference is that, while their parents have the choice whether to attend or not - they (the children) don't.

Ikan kekek...mak eloi...eloi...
sude tersepit...
baru menjerit...

Its a SHAME for the PARENTS to utilise children in protest!

Its a SHAME for the GOVERNMENT that Malaysian citizens have to use their children in protest.

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
