'Happy New Year'...
From the Abdullah Administration... with love
From Reuters yesterday:
"The new rates take effect on Jan. 1. That's our New Year present."
It's confirmed. The toll hike was announced by Works Minister S. Samy Vellu today. At a glance:

This is how Samy takes the opportunity to rub it in, via Malaysiakini:
“When it is near festive seasons, try going into the federal roads. If you are (travelling) for Hari Raya (Aidilfitri) celebrations, we would only reach our destination after the festival is over,” he quipped.

There's one consolation though (... play that broken record.) According to Samy, the toll rates here are far cheaper than those in other countries such as Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines.
Here's the comparison he gave the reporters - Malaysia's Plus highway (RM0.136 per kilometre), Philippines (RM0.355), Thailand (RM0.227), China (RM0.276) and Indonesia (RM0.148).
Forget 2006. Happy New Year!

I guess NO SAMY = NO TOLL. Wakeuplah..it is not Samy's toll. Metramac should give a lesson to Malaysian.
If we keep blaming the wrong party or person then the problem won't go away. It is BN the one ripping the rakyat.
A good example is the secret water concession despite water being esential for life. To say that's secret is already made voting malaysian to be total idiots.
But then we only will blame Lim Keng yeak as if he decides. HAve you noticed all privatisation projects were headed by non malay ministers. Let's see KTM, TNB, TM, Indah water, LRT, TOll, toll and more toll...
No wonder people still vote for UMNO.

The record numbers of highways tolls in Klang Valley and Malaysia can enter the Guiness Book Of Record.

Okay our toll rates might be cheaper than what our poorer neighbors charge. How if Semi Value compare our license renewal fees, road taxes and excise duties with other Asean countries? And LDP toll rate is definitely NOT 13.6 cents/km for average road users.

I don't know if our tolls are the cheapest in Southeast Asia at the moment, but can other countries top us when it comes to the total amount of toll gates? They come up one after the other, yet we still find ourselves in jamsud after jam.
It may be a necessity to remove the subsidy from the tolls, or even fuel, but you'd think that the government had a little bit more tact to do away with the subsidy a few cents at a time, over an extended period of time so we wouldn't feel the immediate pinch. Dropping a fifty-cent or dollar hike on the tolls or petroleum one year after another is just uncalled for. Is this country's administrations really that short of funds so as to bring up this manner of tax?

That burgundy santa clause aka Samy Veloo comes early this christmas with the "good" news.
He failed in his duties as the Works Minister to safeguard the peoples' interests by agreeing to all the stupid toll CONcessionaires agreements.
We had paid more than enough in taxes and if the BN led government had been trivial in their spending and zero corruption, we should be enjoying toll free highways, free medical, free education and enough welfares to go around for all Malaysians. What happen to savings on the fuel subsidy?. Till to date, still no revision though the world oil price had gone down. Now come this new toll hike !!!. Damned it!!!.
We really need to consider our option come next GE. For me, definitely its not going to be that "dacing" after all the mess this BN led government had created and thanks to non other than the overstayed and not in control PM.

My new year resolution for the next 13 years - my vision 2020. Vote BN out.
Samy's reason that we have the lowest toll rates is not valid to me since our cars are one of the most expensive, our fuel is also very high despite us being an oil producer. The money we earned are used for useless projects that adds little or no value to the citizens except that it offers ooportunties for others to get rich.
Next in line to tax us will be more GST tax - watch out for this. They will think of many more ways to do tax us again and again with lame excuses.
Is this what we get for voting BN in? 92% majority to get screwed. Please make sure that we do the right thing in the next election. Most Malaysians have very, very short memories and are easily pacify with cheap trinkets, goodies and empty promises when election times comes.

The real culprit behind it all is the BN/UMNO government. Wanna take a guess who are those highway construction & consessionaire companies?
Comes to think of it, if the BN government has equity stake in these construction & consessionaire companies, does that means, the BN government is doubly screwing us, the rakyat??? Or triply screwing us, if you take vehicle road tax into consideration? Does anyone knows or care to enlighten me on this?
1. We pay road tax.
2. We pay for tolled roads.
3. The stupid government, use our tax money to "compensate" these consessionaire companies.
Aren't we triply screwed?

moo_t, I agree with you. I also dare the B_d_h goverment to remove all subsidies on toll. I'll like to see how they fare next GE.
However, I disagree with you on the impact of tolls on those who rarely use tolled roads. Just like fuel, it cause chain effect on the cost of living whenever there is fuel price increase, regardless whether you use it or not.
Anyway, I suggest the Opposition to start keep all these negativities of the current government. Come next GE, just remind the rakyat of the folly of voting BN again by replaying all the negative events.

The government should not subsidised the toll concessionaires just because the agreement said so. Let it increase, let the LDP toll increase to RM2.10. Why should the rakyat's money being used for compensation, let it increase to the actual value and I guarantee you that we will see a change of government come next general election. These compensation is not for the benefits of road user, it is for the politician to stay in power.

There are two points I wish to present.
ONE.Whenever there are price hikes like petrol, essentials, in this case, toll, our Ministers of Samy's calibre with a straight face like Samy did in this case, which only politicians can do, tell our's is still cheaper than other countries!Samy and the likes of him should not think Malaysians are stupid as they are.Cost of living is directly related to income, per capita, and comparisons of the sort is right and valid only if income levels are equal.Example a clerk's salary in Spore is 3 or 4 times higher than in Malaysia and to justify increases by unintelligent reasoning is STUPID, Samy. Pass this "information" to you Cabinet colleagues.SECOND.
It is clear to every one that our Government went into contracts with highway operators, thinking with other parts of the body other than its brain unless it was deliberate and intentional. The solution is "nationalise" these and other contracts that are not in the national and the people's interest and run as State entities.
Frankly, I do not think our government has the integrity, honesty and the backbone to act as above as vested interests will not permit. Who are these people in the Government working for? See the situation the people of Malaysia is in and the country too. What a sorry state of affairs

This is A SCAM.
Can someone frankly answer my questions:
1. The government pull out the toll subsidy, and the money goes to development of rural areas, yeah right!, 50% goes for development and 50% will vanish into thin air or to someone's pocket.
2. Isn't the goverment should protect the people? But instead I felt like we are like "the cast away" stranded on a cannibal island. We are "EATEN" alive by our own "SCAM" government.
3. Development in country is good, no doubt, however just in klang valley itself, can you tell me how many tolls you will need to pay from cheras to klang? You're just blood suckers!!!
4. To me, New Year Resolution would be everything increase in price, Malaysian is trying to survive on the increasing live expenses, guess what ---> politician gains profits and they are getting richer. Tell me, who own's the majority of the profitable companies (directly or indiretly)? We are becoming like India, where the lower and middle income become poorer and the higher income become richer! This is thanks to the goverment SCAM.
For me, I don't mind changing the government ruling for the next general election. We are already in bad condition, nothing is going to get worst than that!
I won't blame it on Samy coz he's just a doll or pussy, but instead, I'll put the blame to BN. Samy Vellu alone can't do anything. Like I said, he's just a nice little pussy. Got it!

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysians should embrace a charitable mindset and lend a helping hand to the poor at all times, not just during festive seasons, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said yesterday.
When you give higher toll rates, you help the government in collecting more funds. The people with cars, they can afford. You do not need to worry. When you pay higher water bill and electricity bill, it helps the government. When you agree to petroleum price hike and the removal of petroleum subsidy, you allow more funds to get into my pocket... oopps that was a mistake, please do not quote that reporters.
You see when we collect more money from the citizens, we have more funds to put into the 9th Malaysian Plan. That is the difference between me and my former mentor, the former premier. I ensure that we have more funds to do projects. In the end, the projects benefit me and my family. Oh, I mean the projects benefit the UMNO politicians... oh someone must be putting jampi on me. That is why we need to continue make use of the NEP to help the Bumiputera and continue to collect more funds from the people. The people are rich. They can afford another 30 cents to RM1 twice a day. Sedikit sedikit, lama lama jadi bukit. Hohohoho. This will be a merry christmas for me.

Hi all,
Yeap, they are increasing the toll. We hear it loud and clear.
Why not we all, instead of whining, make BN regret for their decisions? Come on, they have been in control of the bloody government since when? We can't be worst off than we already are, can we? All it takes is tell everyone you know to stop voting for BN. If they do, they'll be voting for Barang Naik. Of course, again, the exception is your salary Tak Naik. Remember that.

If people come distribute money in elections, pocket the money and vote for PAS ADIL or DAP. We want those "slurped" up the toll fees from Malaysian to cough it out.

Take a step back and think about it... If BN no longer our government, who should take over instead?
DAP? PAS? Keadilan?
It's not like I want to support BN but BN is the only viable choice. It's not like US with their Democrat and Republic, where both side has equal ability to take over the government. I don't see that in our country. PAS perhaps is the only one who has experience in running a state government. But is PAS ready for the entire country?
PS. I won't choose PAS, I cherish my freedom (even though somewhat limited) but I do not want my freedom to be encumber by more rules expecially from a religious group of old men who think backwards.

Every country needs taxes to functions. However, ours is out of proportion. Some may argue we have achieved a lot economically.
READ THIS FACT: Msia was once richer than South Korea & Spore. Today, South Korea & Spore are way richer than us. Going by the rate Msian are taxed by devil-know-at-what-rate, by the time we reach (if ever) South Korea's & Spore's current levels, not many can earn enough to pay basic necessities!
Our country has been seriously mismanaged for decades! But, we need more time to have enough msian to see through the BN's 'wayang kulit'. But, time is something we don't have coz the world is zoom-ing away from us.
So, just be contended to complain & continue paying in this sub-standard managed place. What else can we do?

Thousands expected at anti-toll hike demo
Bede Hong
Dec 19, 06 12:28pm Adjust font size:
Opposition parties and consumer groups are planning a mammoth
protest against the increase in toll hikes for five major highways
in the Klang Valley.
It is learnt that thousands are expected to turn up at the protest
which will be held along the Lebuhraya Damansara-Puchong (LDP)
highway on Jan 7.
PAS Youth chief Salahuddin Ayub said the Islamic opposition party
alone will bring between 5,000 and 10,000 protestors.
"We are sad that the government is not considerate towards the
people, especially those with low incomes," he said when met after a
closed-door discussion in Kuala Lumpur last night.
The hour-long discussion at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese
Assembly Hall was attended by DAP Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, Parti
Sosialis Malaysia secretary-general S Arutchelvan, PAS treasurer
Hatta Ramli, Parti Keadilan Rakyat information chief Tian Chua and
Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) president Syed Shahrir Syed
Mohammad.
A `Protes Kenaikan Tol' committee has been set up and will be helmed
by Syed Shahrir.
Last week, the government announced that the toll rates for the five
highways will rise between 20 to 60 percent effective Jan 1. LDP
will see its toll rise from RM1 to RM1.60.
Tian said the Jan 7 protest will not only see the participation of
party members. "Local residents who are unhappy with the toll hike
will also participate, " he added when met at the same venue.
Syed Shahrir said the committee has yet to decide on the exact
location to hold the protest.
"It would likely be somewhere where there are parking spaces for the
protestors. We would not be blocking traffic. However, we would be
visible to road users.
"It's a big mobilisation. I don't think it would be solely because
of the toll hikes. The public is very angry at a combination of
things that happened this year, including the fuel hikes," he added.
Buy back highways
The committee will also submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister's
Department on Dec 27 denouncing the toll hikes.
The memorandum will call on the government to make public the
clauses in the concessionaire agreements and to buy back the
concessions.
Works Minister S Samy Vellu disclosed that it cost RM4.13 billion to
construct the five highways: LDP, Shah Alam Highway, Cheras-Kajang
Highway, Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway and the Guthrie Corridor
Expressway.
The minister also revealed that a RM2.589 billion compensation
package for the five concessionaires was to be incurred from Jan 1,
2007 when the new toll rates take effect to the next review in toll
rates, which is between 2010 and 2012.
Samy Vellu also said the government had to compensate a total of
RM2.275 billion to the operators of four of the five highways, not
including Guthrie Corridor, which is a new highway.
However, while he gave a breakdown of this figure, he did not
specify over what period of time this amount was paid.
But going by this, the government could be paying as much as RM4.9
billion in compensation alone for the highways.
Opposition party DAP has urged the government to buy up the five
highways by paying the concessionaires RM4.13 billion for the total
construction cost.
In a related development, DAP will proceed with the Dec 31 protest
at the Grand Saga toll plaza along the Cheras highway. The protest
is jointly organised by the Bandar Mahkota Cheras Open Access Road
Action Committee (BMC-OARAC).
On Sunday, a protest organised by DAP and BMC-OARAC saw some 800
people taking to the streets in Cheras to vent their frustration
against the toll hike.
