Asia, truly Malaysia
December 19. They got Jalan Bukit Bintang closed...

They got the FT Minister chauferred downtown

They got the VVIP

They got the photo-opp for the Press.

And they got the toilets... 23 "high-tech, self-cleaning toilets" that cost RM400,000 each.

Did you spot the contractors who got the tender for the toilets that that cost RM9.2 million in all?
Meanwhile, hear this: The state of Malaysia's public toilets has become a hot-button issue, with tourists saying they were often dirty and lacked basic items such as soap and paper. "They can be very messy because people don't seem to know how to use the toilets," Spencer Kaurin, a 46-year-old Norwegian tourist, told Reuters. (Also see Reuters blog.)
Can the Screenshots reader who sent me the photos help me with proper photo credit to the original author?

Ahh, what a waste of public money - the grand officiating ceremony, I mean.
And true, Malaysian public lack civic consciousness when using public toilets. They just dont bother and hope someone will take care the mess that they left behind. What a shame.
On a lighter note, I wish the ladies in kebayas will be stationed there to give soft reminder to the users to clean up.

RM400,000 a toilet. This is almost a bungalow by any standard in Aman Perdana.
And an Istana Idaman Zakaria in some sub-urban location.
At least, a toll at Puchong/Damansara/Kepong at RM1.60 is cheaper then a KLCC toilet charges, which is RM2. This RM400,000 automated toilet, I've no idea!!
Does this money earned by the various contractors and 'people' get flowed back to Rakyat in any way?
... benefitting and not forgetting Pak Ngah, Mak Tipah and Uncle Chan back in some small forgotten kampung?

Another stupidity for the world to laugh about. If you notice, it's in the Reuters' "Oddly Enough" category!!!
How much more stupid can we get?

Public toilet concept is not new when I was in Shanghai last year. Just the scale of the toilet installed is different. In shanghai, the public toilet seemed managed by some small shop owners, not government. I didnt' go inside, but you can tell it is like our Police Booth (that you see around KL area) size only, two or three booths in a row. Quite a lot of these toilets. I think you can find the booth every 200 or 300 meters apart. And it seemed lower cost to build.
From the photo, it seemed that our KL public toilet is more advanced with high tech setup. It does feel futuristic. But for "toilet"... hmm. Somemore it is not cheap to build that. Is it going to be managed by Government? I believe toilet cleanliness depends on the people who use it, no matter who clean it. Let's see if KL people are more responsible to take care of public infrastructure. If this work, great. If not, it will become a white elephant. The price is expensive to build, not to mention the cost of maintenance. And yes, it depends on electricity. Any power backup? What is you are inside and power failure? (Damn). What if the automatic flush system failed? Is there any manual override? What if someone write some essay on the walls? How to clean it? What if people "duck" on the seat rather than "sit"? Don't tell me there is CCTV inside! Don't tell me you have to wait for the lady to check first before you can leave! Oh, it is 24/7?
Can't wait to find out. But a serial of questions need to be answered. If this is oil money put in good use, then fine. If this is rakyat money put in waste use, then not fine! How do we know? Anyone got the info? It is a Top Secret?
Just lots of questions...

Lets look at the brighter side.
Since, it is so damn important to warrant spending such an outrageous amount, when more practical and cheaper alternatives are abundant, we should consider creating a ministry to manage this.
We call it a Jamban Ministry, ok?
We need someone important to handle this. I nominate the handsome man in the 3rd photo. Any objection?
Jeff, can help to prepare a proposal? Don't overcharge. RM9.2 million is just nice.

dont u know how things work in Msia? The contractors will get someone to damage some componetns int here and they can happily sent their technicians to fix it and charge a hefty price. Else how to create constant revenue?

Down South there is a city, but I cannot remember I paid a single cent to patronise any public toilet, clean and comfortable! I now believe the new word called "resourse curse'!

That chef Mohd Fadlee Yusuff is the first one who tried the toilet and say "it got class". Why the reporter didn't ask him to teka the price tag? If he was told the price, I think he will shrink his bowel too...

hmmmm RM400,000 each??? !!!! omg!!! so expensive.. what else they have inside? complete collection of OSIM and gold plated toilet seats???
The description I read says the seat cleans itself… now I found this self cleaning toilet which sounds like they do the same thing including drying the seats after each use…. which only cost USD 1200 or RM 4800 each!!!
that means instead of RM 400,000 each they could have bought 81 self cleaning toilets!!!! so instead of just having 23 for the total of nearly 10 million ringgit installed only in Kuala Lumpur they could have bought this cheaper version which sound to be doing exactly the same and get 1885 self cleaning toilets!!!! which will provide bigger impact instead of 23 units!!!

RM 400 000 for one. What about the yearly cost maintenance ?
The only thing needed to be changed is the education level. Not changing the facility.

Crispeduck,
that is how biz is conducted and contracts awarded in Malaysia.
The ammount and size of leakage and absurd amount (BROAD DAY LIGHT) robbery is something which frightens the daylight out of me.
Repeat again. BROAD DAYLIGHT ROBBERY. Petroleum money or not. Money could still be benefitially used to helpout all the Uncle Chan, Auntie Rosie, Mak Cik Tipah, Pak Atan out there.

for 10 million ringgit, they can afford to hire someone there to lick the toilet cleans for a long time.okay, i am being disgusting but the meaning is that, 10 million, ROI is never coming back. and thus making us pay more fines. that exact 10 Million can also be used to help us on our TOLL price hike.
i been around town to see the launch, the bunting is firstly in Malay, no foreigners is gonna read malays. how many people is going to run across the streets to use this toilet and risk getting KILLED by our famous Mat REmpit and Mat Drag ?
cakap betul betul, lu orang ada fikir apa apa bila bikin tandas ni ?

If anyone can help propose this to the government please do so. But please just charge 50% mark up price. So instead of RM 400k maybe can charge RM 10,000 each making about RM 4000 to 5000 profit
at least not so bad lah, everyone also need to cari makan just don't do it at the expense of Uncle Chan, Auntie Rosie, Mak Cik Tipah, Pak Atan out there like "aku anak Malaysia" say.

The cost of the automatic toilets of RM 400,000 per unit appear to reflect the sort of value for money the public gets under Pak Lah's honest to God 9th Malaysia Plan.By normal practice 40 % of the value had been cashed out by some senior "UMNOPUTRA"upfront.Even after considering this the price is still high.We have to go to the bottem of this latest "get rich quick" scheme by the parties concerned. We have to put to an end to this endless insults to our intelligence and common sense.
