Microsoft: '64% of Malaysian bloggers are female'

Do you know that over 74% of bloggers in Malaysia are below 25 years old, and about 64% of the bloggers are female?

Significantly, over 56% among them take to blogging because they want an opinion space for themselves.

Interestingly too, politician's blogs scored low in popularity chart (14%) across Asia, except Malaysia!

The study, named 'Blogging Asia: A Windows Live Report', was conducted online on Microsoft's MSN portal, covering its seven markets in Asia, namely Hong Kong, India, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand. The sample size was over 25,000, whose feedback was collated in August and September, and the data were analysed by a market research firm, Harris Interactive.

The emerging, but compelling, trend is that about half of the population online in Asia have a blog. They blog primarily to build social connections and to claim an opinion space of their own, for the freedom of self-expression.

Is a silent, mental revolution taking place right across Asia -- thanks to Internet and blogs? I shared my thoughts in my CNet Asia blog, Lemak Lemang.

Net_157cover130.gifThis blogger is featured in UK magazine .Net Issue #157, in a Scott Carney story titled: Blogging against the Machine.

As it takes a while for the magazine to reach Malaysia, can anyone residing in UK please kindly scan the pages and email it for my reference?

Thanks.

I this this online research is really skewered. I posted about this, and highlight several many key points which are flawed here

JEFF OOI says: I appreciate your input, TheFalcon. I have also included your take on this skewed study in thelatest posting in my CNet Asia blog, Lemak Lemang.

Microsoft has done such skewered research with MSN Spaces before, and looks like they are up to it again.

The Falcon,
I tend to agree with your assessment that MSN results on the blogsphere is NOT representative of the Malaysian blogsphere but it does point to a trend that younger members are MORE involved as they are more IT savvy and exposed than the older ones. As for more females ones, it is again open but of course is 100% true for the local MONSTERS as they are all the KBCs.

But do remember Blogs and weblogs are created out of joy, playfulness and creativity to share your thoughts; observations and perhaps some profound knowledge and age is of no barrier. You are using your natural abilities freely.
Now as life is spontaneous so blogs should be as free as air and spontaneous comments and interactions can then flow through them indiscriminately.
Interactions with others do occur, yet none occur what you do not attract or draw to you by your THOUGHTS, FEELINGS, ATTITUDES or EMOTIONS expressed in your blogs

Its great that it shows a growing trend among Malaysians to blog and express themselves online... it was quite lonely when I started my online presence and everyone was going "what blog?" And some local blogs are truly amazingly written.

Theres actually a very big difference between male and female blogs, if you observer properly, and ya... females are... very keh poh =)

Anyway, i just don't like the way MSoft skewers such thing. Claiming 72 million blogs wordlwide on Spaces is a far cry from 'slightly tweaking results'

Jeff, .net magazine December is already on sale in Malaysia. I got mine from Kinokuniya KLCC.

unlike Singapore or China ..Malaysian political blog came out first which proved that the present govt. practiced true freedom of speech !!!

Nice to know that Malaysian females constitute the large majority of bloggers in Malaysia - at least they will stop eating the heads of their partners & sing out their nagging overtures on the net. Another way of lessening the stress on the eardrums of our male counterparts will be to offer broadband internet to females at concessional rates or the Government could subsidise the fee only for females. Long live the internet & blogging! Hope the MSN results are true - but then again, MSN is American right?

For some reasons, I(a guy) pretty like to read girls' blogs ekeke. The below is generally what I felt about the content of those blogs:-

American - latest celebrity gossips, showing off their latest fashion

European - about their recent pub/disco outings

Chinese(China) - about what new book they read, new songs they listened

Malaysian - about their boyfriend and breakup stories

Prove of Microsoft survey are SNAFU(Status Normal, All F*ck Up):
They fail to mentioned
