TM Net: Michael Lai exits

Super CEO DAWO enters the staccato phase of his re-org strategy for Telekom Malaysia (TM), the GLC that is struggling to achieve its financial KPIs.

TM Net CEO Michael Lai has left the TM family effective today, confirming a two-month old rumour that has been circulating in the industry. Lai is believed to have tendered his resignation last month.

A TM internal memo issued late today says Lai has opted to pursue an external career opportunity (See PDF here).

A Bernama dispatch says TM is in the process of looking for a suitable successor to take over Lai's post.

Yah he finally released Streamyx is a stinking, I mean sinking ship....so he has to leave too.

No one can fix it..

JEFF OOI says: I can stake my personal reputation to vouch for Michael that this is not the case as you have so simplistically stated.. But I won't sing in public either.

I would say Michael has been offered a much better paid job with much better prospects. Say what you want, being non-Malay, he will never becomes the CEO of TM , no matter how good he is, or alternatively, no matter how bad his competitors are. I have many friends, non-Malays, who are very good in telecommunication and telecoms, and they are all employed by MNCs and foreign companies in top position.

I would agree, he has reached the glass ceiling, and time to move on to better things. Facts of life in this sorry country. Best of luck on his future endevours.

It is not about race. It is more about know-who.

I can say with a lot of conviction that Michael has done A LOT to build the TM Net brand during his tenure as CEO. If anything, he leaves behind an entity that has improved by leaps and bounds in terms of pro-acting with consumers and listening to their grouses. He is a true marketing professional. Many in the industry would agree that this man would be an asset anywhere he went.

The problems with QoS and such lies much higher than TM Net, and is a much more complicated issue than what is observed on the surface. Sadly, some people might construe it based on surface value only, and this is regrettable.

whoever sits there my streamyx connection still sucks! have to refresh my browser to get a a slow loading up of webpages.

Like Jeff, I could also vouch for Michael. He was a client of mine back in Celcom days, so I know what he is capable of. It's a loss for TMNet not for Michael. I wish Michael all the best.

Dogbert Business lesson 101 :
A Company reorganisation is similar to Merry Go Round, nothing change.

This is what happens for GLC in the pass 20+ years.

Know-Who and Kow-Tow too. Regards.

Personally, I think Michael Lai is one of the best business minded man I ever seen. In other words, he makes money while retaining his money. He made celcom what celcom was around 2-3 years ago. He made streamyx popular even thought the QoS was really bad. I think TM has just lost a big piece of gold.

I agree with some of you guys that he is good in what he does.
Michael Lai, wherever you are, I wish you luck as I believe you are actually choosing which company's offer to take at this moment!!

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
