See, we told you so!
What was reported on September 27, by Oriental Daily News and in this blog, has become true.
Toll rates will be increased for five concessionaires come Jan 1, 2007, according to Works Minister S. Samy Vellu.
We said after Raya, didn't we?
Comments
why do the government want to this to us??
what about the RM400 million istana negara and sending two assholes to space to do stupid things??? aren't that a big waste of money??

We are constantly screwed... my salary has not increased for the past year and a half. Always getting that "we are doing well reason".
Sometimes I wonder what is the purpose of the government wanting to have this and that at the expense of tax payer's monies. We pay taxes and yet we have to fork out money for the things that was being given unto us.
Sending people to space and performing the teh tarik feat is a waste of money. The new palace is also a waste of money...
When will we learn? Through another economic meltdown in Asia? I would like to see another one!
On On!

While toll increases are a pain in the ass, there are a few common misconceptions.
As in any highway concessions, toll rates (including hikes) are pre-determined to account for traffic volume and other economic factors. This is to ensure that the toll operators remain viable and "investable". To a large extent, this is also to satisfy the financing requirements for the projects.
At the end of the day, the rates over the period of the concessionaire is scrutinised by bankers, the Ministry and other consultants - and agreed by most to be the equilibrium. Thus, any toll hikes are usually not a knee jerk response to inflationary pressures but merely carried out according to plans based on "well thought-out and negotiated financial models".
Naturally, as a consumer, I detest anything that is more expensive today than yesterday.
Nevertheless, there are certain economic realities that we cannot avoid. This is probably one of them.
Perhaps, one solution (for those staying in Subang and working in KL) is to stay longer at work and use the Federal Highway more often. It's usually rather clear after 9pm.
Cheers.

Hah! As expected. You knew this would be coming when SemiValue said that "toll rates would not increase this year" back in March when the price of petrol increased by RM0.30.
Back then, almost everyone knew that SemiValue knew that there is no contractual obligation for the goverment to increase toll rates. And now this! What a load of crap?!
At this rate, I shudder to think 10 - 20yrs from now, the minimum toll rates could be as low as RM3.00. And this, I think is a conservative estimation!

High time the government breaks open all highway contracts.
They are all one sided and all made during Mahathirs tennure. These consessionaires say their margins are small, yes right after management fees of millions and millions, the margins are small.
How many times has Penang bridge already been paid back?? And we still pay toll.
Its not the consessionaire that makes the money, its the management with ridiculous salaries!

AverageJoe, I agree with you. I live in KL, work in USJ. I've no choice but to use the Kesas in the morning, but I'd stay later in the evening to use the Federal Hwy just to avoid the Kesas tolls.
That's the best I could do for the time being.
Well, folks, as someone says before, "tukar gaya hidup lah...". Unless, of course, you have no bloody choice but to pay toll to access to a certain area. Else, I suggest you move somewhere else, less the toll plazas!

Malaysia middle class, SNAFU.
And just to remind everyone, TOL is not imminent, Malaysia is going to join the developed country by introducing GST on 1st January 2006.
Good luck for the lower income group.

I wouldn't object the rise if the roads were in a condition that would be suitable with a rise in prices. However, with sinkholes, potholes bad lighting or even no lighting at all, it's just not worth it.
Fix all these up, and then talk about the rise in toll prices.

Yes, you got it. It's from us, cut budget here and there on the issues that are suppose to lighten the load on Rakyat. Accumulate all in one Tabung, and UMNOPUTRA will queue up to take a dip, after they prove their loyalty of course.

On the toll payable through Subang & Shah Alam. Do you know that the operator collect a cool RM1 million cash each & every other day? Here is the calculation - a person stay in KL & work in Klang has to pay toll 4 times a day & vice versa for one live in Klang & work in KL. There are easily 250,000 travellers to & fro every day. Say each time they pay RM1 then times 4 that would be RM1 million a day! 15 years ago my engineer friend who was involved in designing & built the conveyor conduit for transfering the cash from each toll booth to the office (this was commissioned as a result of a robbery at the toll booth before that) found out that at that time when the toll rate was something like 50 or 60 sen the collection was already RM300,000 per day.
