'Say NO to New Economic Policy'... Anwar Ibrahim

October, former DPM Anwar Ibrahim told a standing-room-only crowd in Bechtel Conference Center, Stanford University, that the New Economic Policy is no longer relevant and applicable in Malaysia.

A team of critical thinking students have put up a multimedia showcase of Anwar's talk, and it's now available on thecicak.com.

The full MP3 of Anwar's address is available here on Stanford website.

By the way, Anwar just told Bloomberg that he will run for Parliament in 2008. He says he plans to push for greater democracy, more press freedom and an easing of affirmative action laws that he argues have enriched "cronies and family members of the cabinet and the leaders of the ruling party".

And by the way again, Anwar is 59.

*applause*

So many people have viewed that multimedia showcase since last night.. our bandwidth was maxed out!

We are putting it up on some other host now, it will be back up in 20 mins from now =)

You mean, "Tak Nak!"

JEFF OOI says: You mean 'Battery Low' on your side? That's a low blow. Be warned!

Really Anwar?

Who's boys ran tv3 when he was a DPM? Who instructed TNB to buy liberty power in Pakistan a company linked to Munawar's Anis that causes TNB to lose few hundred millions? How about a failed taked over of KBB by Arus Murni? Need I say more? One more question does he think he will be where he is today without the NEP? Think not. Agree that certain aspects of NEP need to be relooked but not in totality. Let's face it M'sia is not integrated as Nation. Arguable whether NEP actually causes it because other races seems keen to hang on to their cultural legacy & some can't even speak the motherland language, probably the simplest language to learn in the world. Do not just asked the majority to give up rights but asked yourselves, what steps have you taken to embrace the majorities culture & language which should logically form the basis of the national culture (pls leave religion out of this because I am not refering to it).

"he argues have enriched cronies and family members of the cabinet and the leaders of the ruling party". Talking about yourself is it..We remember boss..You're not any different from them.

Anawr was, and he still is, and may be he forever will be a controversial figure.

Make no mistake about this: He was once part of the very system (regime?) that he is now condemning here and abroad.

Of course, no one would dispute that he was unjustly wronged by the previous administration. But the fact remains he was victimized then not because he stood for a just and fair Malaysian society but rather he was mercilessly defeated in the ugly power and wealth grabbing game then.

So, here we have Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim --- a known devil or an unknown angel?

You decide!

"low blow", Jeff? That's how the blog title is translated, with neutral implication. Did he say, "Say NO"? Was it not an amplification?

JEFF OOI says: OK, I take it a sconfirmed that the battery is indeed running low on the upstairs.

Btw, Bloomberg link is a dynamic link.

can some1 be in politics and still remain an angel....?

....

To Anwar's detractors (or those of any opposition members):

The rule in politics is "the lesser of two evils".

Well, to have someone to speak for us, be him a devil or an angel, is better than NO one to speak for us, don't you think?

As it is, you can see the results of 2004's GE in our current Parliment. Small opposition voice, BN rules with impunity just because they have 92% majority. The result? Datuk Z makes a good examplery here.

Totally agrees with you, Najah.

last GE was a no brainer dat de Gov will win big. Power was just passed on, and every1 had a positive outlook on wat to come in de future. Sadly, we just need two freakin years to find out dat we made a wrong decision.

significant impact on de results is needed in de next GE. and if Anwar is serious in rejoinin politics, it could very well be an interesting ball game....

A saying goes like this: "With competition, there's advancement". How true.

BN have never really had any real competition all these years, GE after GE. Can you see the type of Ministers we have in Parliment here?

In this case, the Keris wielding guy makes a good example.

BN won nt becuz they were good in governance, they won becuz de oppositions didnt have de ammo to counter BN!

bringing up rediculous agendas, heck they dnt stand a chance! people voted BN for "the lesser of two evils...!"

and when it happens dat way, you have Keris-man!
Bungalow-Castle Man, Toll-Hike Man and also de Fat Lady in de Govmnt!

The rule in politics is "the lesser of two evils".

Absolutely. Well put, Najah.

How clever! I think it is good timing.

I've always believed that Anwar was victimised by Tun and UMNO. Now I know why he was kicked out of UMNO! He's a traitor !Thanks God for Tun and his vision!

Focus on the message and not resort to mere childish criticism of the messenger. Many good points were raised and a few I disagree but nevertheless a speech from a well read man and came across to an American audience as a thoughtful moderate Muslim leader. I'm amused with the mention of a must read by Anwar - Alexis de Tocqueville and the appreciation of 'Democracy in America'. Also a shocking revelation of the hoax anti-Semitic literature 'The Protocols of the Elders of Zion' being circulated in UMNO assembly. I disagree with the idea of moving affirmative action policy based on race to the marginalised? I believe neither should be embraced as all forms of re-distribution of wealth should not be encouraged. The recent death of Milton Friedman should remind us that the free market is still the best form of allocation of wealth. Will not go into further details - need to get back to work. Finally, ppl. look to the future and not the past and if we focus on the agenda proposed by all parties and make an intelligent decision we can indeed go far.

I am glad that Anwar is back and he is a strong contender in the next election. It will definitely be exciting.

At the very least, he is very clear of his policy and articulates it to us.

I've always believed in a two-party or a three-party system of government. This is one thing that we, as rakyat do not understand, and the BN government will never want us to learn about it, so that they can continue to exploit the rakyat's gulliblelity till no ends. Without a strong opposition, the government of the day, like BN, will just bulldose everything in their favor, regardless of what the rakyat wants.

It takes 2 to have opposing opinions, but it takes 3 to form democracy. The key words: "3 to form democracy". I've learned this from the Australian parliment and their system of government. Unlike Malaysia, they have a strong opposition, plus a 3rd major party, which have the special position to hold the "balance of power". It is up to the 2 major parties to convince this 3rd party to vote in their favor whenever there is a decision for the government of the day to make, and they cannot come to an agreement about the decision with the Opposition.

Therefore, Opposition, whoever it may be, might not be a bad thing afterall. At least, there is another party to look after the well being of the rakyat for a change, when the BN government take us for ride, just like what they have been doing to us all this while, don't you think?

Do you like to be dictated by a single entity when comes to trading? So, why should we be dictated by 1 party when comes to government?

Similarly, in a company's Board, although the major holder gets to make the decision, other smaller shareholder needs to agree to the decision. Of course, if the major shareholder owns 92% of the share, he/she don't even have to consult the shareholder of the 8% of the share when comes to decision making. It'll be a different story if it's a 51% vs 49% ownership.

My point is, the Opposition, whoever it may be, deserve our rakyats' support if we do not want BN to continue to plunder the countries' coffers without impunity, through whatever disguise that they are using. Be it NDP, NEP or whatever. We need to send BN a signal.
Enough IS Enough! All we want is EQUALITY, regardless of race or religion. Period.

Can BN do that? Nah, I don't think they know what Equality means... Sigh...

I don't think any changes can be made through the ballot box..unless the popular votes are taken into account..BN will rule forever

nt being pessimistic or wat la...

just being realistic here....

do you guys really can percaya de electoral committee...?

is there a faintest of chance of havin BN losing out on de GE....?

leandre ...

it is not just the EC...it is the well proven system designed so that there is no chance in h**l BN will lose in GE

my point is..altough BN only win about 52% of popular votes they still have 2/3 majority in parliment.

I don't care for who wins, I just want the a$$holes out of the government.

Noh Omar, for one.

Totally agree with remy, you ppl so negative thinking.. His intentions are clear..the time has come again for him to take his share of the public's money..he almost got it once but Tun pushed him away..now he's back..

another dumb dude in parliment is dat Bung Mokhtar dude frm Kinabatangan....

giberrish talk frm him all de time , he s starting to look like a Tellytubby!!

Tinky Winky!

leandre

correct...and we don't want one-eyed MPs either now, do we?

All the more we need to work together as one rakyat to give these BN goons a good kick on the rear. Spread the words around. Kerisamuddin's act of shouting while holding the keris is a nice picture to use to convince them.

Don't sit there and wait for things to happen. Make it happen!

If Kelantan can kick out BN, even with the EC on their side, why can't other states or constituency?

convicts, bumboys, NGO's, rejoice. For here is a person who have been through it all. he was under ISA, been in jail, humiliated as a bumboy and therefore should understand transvestites and gays feelings, been to the top of the hierarchy and all the wheelings and dealings that comes with it.
NEP should be abolish because the country needs to earn revenue from the bumis. The only way the country can do this is by getting the bumis to work at an earlier age instead of getting them to waste theior youth attending silly courses that will get them enemployed at a letr age.
There is no better education than working at an earlier age.
If there is any assistace given to bumis, it should be in the form of an early education to those in rural areas at the age of four which sould be provided free by the government.

de one eyed MP shd find a new job...

i heard Pirates of The Carribean is filmin for de 3rd movie....

he wont need make up!

and for Noh...

let me ask you....

what rhymes well wit "Bodoh"...?

"Doh" is a good one, leandre. LOL

aiiya....

i was expecting Noh...

oh well...lol =P

Strengthening of opposition is good idea. Be it pas/anwar/dap/independent. At least Zakaria and such will not walk away scot-free.

You know why his mansion issue crop-up? Blinded by the power he wield, MPK under his guidance dismantle the competing satay store down the road.

That poor malay chap cant pay the money he borrowed from the bank. (thats why the sultan said hes arrogant), He cried foul to umno. nobody give him shit. Later DAP helped him highlight his predicament in the media. Then aid starts pouring in.

We r in serious need of balance of power. Lesser of the 2 evil? Why not let the evils fight?

After which they will all need your support. At the very least, they wont treat you like dirt.

I say vote Anwar into seats. I really like to see how he fit into the equilibrium.

simple... if a gov can't give what we want, don't vote for them. although we can't predict whether the new gov will be any better, but at least there is a new hope rather than no hope...

... sigh ... no hope land it is!

Agree with you, megahyper. That will be the day when politician should treat the rakyat with some respect, and not the rakyat running to them like servants. The politician should be the servants of the rakyat, not the other way round!

Looking at the candidates we have for MP, I think not much choices to go around.
Based on lesser of two evil, I agree with the rest. Let's vote Anwar in.

Very important and significant speech by an ex DPM. No surprises that Anwar will come back to Malaysian politic, but I hope he sticks to his words and not just riding on popular sentiments to gain political support. So far, Anwar is the onlt prominent figure who came out and said things must change in Malaysia to remain relevant to the rest of the world. And I also think, he is so far the only one, who is capable of overturning the tyranny of UMNOPUTRA.

now you guys know how stupid you are for voting BN to power. In a first place, pray to god that everyone who ever being vitimized by BN will forgive you for your ignorance. No matter what you said now, your vote that makes everyone here miserable.

As for anwar, I dont think he has made any wrongdoing while in gov. If he ever do that the present ruling party will exposed it to tarnish him or to take him to the court and he will never able to walk out free. They don't have to present him in kangroo court with kangaroo case and introduced our kids with 'liwat' and whatever jargon just to put him in jail.

as for oppositions, if you guys never vote them then you should never cried for 'credible opp' or whatever names you called them. you never put an effort to make them credible then now you ask them to be, where are they need your vote in order to make them strong. opps have lots of good policy in their manifesto and you the one who never did an effort to explore them...and now you cried they never offer something credible.......stupid!

you vote for monkey then you got monkey treatment laaa....malaysia bodoh

Lest we not forget Anwar himself wasn't the most sensible when he was in power.

Lots of Bahasa talk, refusing entry to Malaysians to a chance for better education (international school entrance), and a lot more other thoughts.

Maybe for the moment he's the lesser of two evils, but he's got a closet bulging with skeletons just as well.

I agree with you that Anwar still has plenty of skeletons in the cupboard.

But I think he is trying to redeem himself and his past.

We need to give the man a chance to redeem himself and to prove that he is and will be BETTER PERSON or better politician than he was before.

Every religion allows a person to redeem himself, and as decent people, we should do the same.

By the way, he was incarcerated, rightly or wrongly, that much, you and I, if we had not be jailed, cannot say much, about how to remove the demons that are playing havoc inside us.

Some of us writing on this blog are actually fightingn with our own demons, since we all, if not all, had not spent one day in jail (except for traffic offenses).

My view: Give Anwar a chance to redeem himself rather to judge him from his past, especially after he had spent some years at his lowest point of his personal.

You have to give him credit for his personal courage and moral fortitude to have survive emotionally and mentally to this day, after having fallen from Deputy Prime Minister to become a prisoner, with all the international publicity on the most hurtful and horrendous accusations of his individual self.

Long live Anwar Ibrahim. I recently met him on his recent talk in Chicago. He is a very moderate Muslim. Whatever that has happened in the past has made him the man he is today.

He compared Pakistan and India where both countries gained indendence at the same time and now India is light miles away. He was pointing out the problem of extremist within Islam and how it can dampen growth.

I could not care less about Anwar when he was a DPM, but after the ordeal he went thru, I became an ardent silent supporter.

Trust me.....better Anwar than Kerismudin or Najib or some unknown kodok. He has gone thru too much shit to betray his followers. And if he does become our PM, the world will be watching.

I am only afraid that before he becomes active in politics again, he will be thrown into the pit again with another sodomy case or maybe link him with a blown-up woman...

I am only afraid that before he becomes active in politics again, he will be thrown into the pit again with another sodomy case or maybe link him with a blown up woman...

TDrM was once kicked out of UMNO before but he come back into the party and proved himself a better leader.

In DSAI's case, what he is trying to do is to reform but through another party.

I doubt it if it can be done in the short term. He needs to reform the UMNO's grassroot level first before we can see any visible change. The same need to be done for the grassroot level in MCA and MIC. If he can earn 50% of these support, may be there is light at the tunnel for any reform.

M2 can provide the local voice, AI the international voice. That's how they can leverage on their respective strengths.

Both should blog or take part in blogs regularly. That's how they can bypass the constrictions and borders.

With technologies nowadays, it will be easy for them not only to be read, but also heard and seen on the screen. That's a way to get their voice over to the malay heartland.

In fact, we can take the singapore mentor model one step ahead - virtualise the continued communication, dialogue if you may, between past leaders and the present generations of citizens.

Points of view from the outside can differ very quickly than points of view when on the inside. Evolving from inside to outside the political and leadership arenas can build new insights and perspectives, all the richer because they have been through it all.

There are things happening in government that say not all has been revealed which if revealed would present a better picture for the rakyat.

M2 and AI have their respective roles to play in this.

If people like Najib can say leaders need criticism and the press can provide that, why not also allow past leaders to play more active, regular and semi-official roles through personal initiatives, blogs, ngo-type vehicles to continue to show their concerns for how things are being done?

When actors leave the stage and take off their masks, that's where you get to see the lines against the light of reality.

It's worthwhile to consider this. Since their people are reading this, take these ideas to them. And get it started quickly.

As I say before, it's our mentality that we are stuck with 1 dominant party as government. If we can recognise that it's not only the ruling party that can cater for the rakyat's needs, Malaysia wouldn't be where it is today. With sufficient support of the Opposition, those BN goons wouldn't be so arrogant as they are today. Everything they do, they will have to think twice less they will be grilled by the Opposition, or worst, losing critical votes to the Opposition camp.

If the general public can understand the concept of a balance ruling party vs opposition party earlier, Malaysia would have been better off today. Unfortunately, the Malaysian public is too gullible. They are too driven by fear and/or greed. Worst still, the BN government continue to mess with the education in such a way that Malaysian citizens become gullible lots, completely susceptable to the BN propagadas.

Concurring with most, I also feel Anwar deserve a chance. Trust he is better than those clowns.

I too believe Anwar deserve another chance. He had been there, he was outsted, and humiliated. The fact that he said he will never rejoin UMNO speaks volume, unlike the guy who setup up Semangat 46 yrs ago.

Futhermore, Anwar sees what the rest of UMNO, and to certain extend PAS, couldn't see is that the NEP is causing more harm than good to the nation and to the economy of Malaysia as a whole. If Malaysia do not get rid of this subsidy in the form of NEP, we will continue to slide further in terms of international competitiveness. With the rise of China and India economies, we cannot afford to continue with this inward looking policy. Otherwise, in a decade or less, we will end up like Thailand or Indonesia years ago compared to Malaysia.

A more recent example is when Honda decided to set up plant in Thailand to manufactured parts for Honda's global distribution. Didn't Malaysian government aim to become the regional hub for passanger cars? What did the Thais do to manage to attracts the Japanese to set up plants there instead of Malaysia? Find out what the fat lady says and you'll know why.

Do you still think BN or AAB or the fat lady cares about the rakyat anymore? If they do, they wouldn't be so blinded by what's going on with all the negative things that's happening to Malaysia. Those UMNO goons are more interested to suck the country dry and pile up their cash in some overseas account so that when the time is right, they'll be the first to jump ship to another country. Remember that there was a guy who carries a load full of cash to Australia some years ago? Wasn't he an UMNO fella?

I'll give Anwar a vote. But we have to do our part. If you study the demograhic of voters e.g. the Chinese - every vote of the younger generation is neutralized by the older. The battle is between the generations. No matter how hard I try to sound the current hopelessness of BN, the older ones just want to spend some peaceful years before going off.

3rdGen, you can't blame the older generation for being hesitant with changes. That's why we need to educate everyone, including the older generation, we know of about the rotten core of UMNO/BN is beyond salvation. Not only that, we also need to tell them that a strong opposition does not equal to a weak government. In fact, a strong opposition, means that there is someone else other than the ruling party to look out for the interest of the rakyat. Let them, be it the ruling party or opposition camp, slug it out to win votes with their fair policies for the general good rather than just pay money for it. Worst still empty promises, year after year (mainly from BN, of course). Do you know that those who vote based on the money they get from the wakil rakyat is actually selling themselves short? Sooner or later, these bugger wakil rakyat is gonna collect back what they have spent during election. Take a guess who they are gonna collect from?

For those who buy into BN's empty promises, year after year, since 1957, I think it's time to give Opposition a chance. Or, at least, let's give BN a run for their money before they think they can treat the rakyat like mindless idiots! I for one, have had enough of BN's stupid policies which is driving Malaysia's economy to the ground. We better change this government before globalization change Malaysia over, and render us on par with some African country!

i met Datuk Anwar Ibrahim during the recent Sarawak State Election. shook his hand and I can see it in those eyes... the desire to make things right in Malaysia. He can make a fortune just by living outside the country but he chose to stay and fight because he knows that he has a duty. That is what is missing within our current leaders. To serve the country.. not his own greed.

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
