Nicol world squash queen again!

Like Alex Yoong, Nicol David is another Malaysian who never says die in world class competitive sports.

Having lost the opener, then trailed behind Australian Natalie Grinham, Nicol took the last two games to complete a 1-9 9-7 3-9 9-5 9-2 win, and retained her women's World Open title in Sunday's final in Belfast.

Malaysia has no websites to congratulate her on her feat, so you have to make do with this BBC website.

Thanks reader Peter Sinniah for the heads-up.

Our ministers are too busy to notice that.....

too busy playing with keris..
too busy building Sport centre in London...
too busy with creating "towering UMNOputras"....
too busy sleeping on the job...

At such a young age, to be world champion.. TWICE. She'll dominate this sports for years.Congrats! Nicol!

Any datukship for her?

Please DO NOT give her a Datukship....she doesn't belong in the Scumbag League...

She is way ABOVE that....

This just serve to prove that Sports associations do not need big shot politicians to be at their helm for the associations to produce world champions.

Go Nicol. You are already a ‘Datuk’ in my eyes!

Errr... just wonder why it is under badminton, but not squash? funny...

A truly "World Class" Malaysian.

Between her and a Malaysian playing with teh-tarik in space - give me a Nicol anyday, anytime.

Well done. A "Malaysia Bolehan" for real.

i know..plenty of scumbags out there...but she will me a model datuk...and put the rest to shame.

Sultan Selangor have come out with stringent conditions for datuk awards...

Well done Nicole!

When Hafiz Hashim won the All England title, he was given a warrior home coming celebration.

Well, Nicol did win the world championship twice which no Asian has won it before and she did it twice and that is a massive achivement. The best thing is according to her coach, she hasn't even peaked yet.

If the Malaysian government wants a role model for a towering Malaysian, look no further, Nicol is here.

It beats wasting rakyat's money to send a guy to space to play with stones and pebbles. Here we have one serious gal playing serious game on world stage and on another the government is sending one serious guy to space playing silly girl's game.

One can't get any sillier than this.

We know squash queen Nicole David, not some smudge face latuk.

Congrats Nicol.

Hey, of course Nicol does not deserve the Latukship. What has she really done???
She is not a famous singer or even swam the English Channel or sailed around the world...she is not some low level politician....

This is the real 'Malaysia Boleh'!

I'm not sure, is age also a criteria for Datukship?? Maybe she's too young, and what do you guys think? Her achievement is remarkable and this is "world class" champion twice!

Maybe, put in on hold till she's more mature enough for the Datukship title or her later contribution to the sports and our country. By winning again, be a coach when older, win Olympic gold medal future etc.

Folks

Any congratulatory statements for Nicol from UMNO and UMNO Youth?

Or from that Son In Law who seem to be giving press statements lately to the foreign press as if he is the Deputy Prime Minister.

Nicol needs to change her name to get any decent recoginistion from this UMNO-dominated Govt.

Nicol...you make us all proud. Congratulations and may you continuously remind our politicians that the goal to remain "ketuanan Melayu" is constantly moving upwards and when are they ever going to reach it?

You might just be quite a pain in the butt to all those assembled at the UMNO GA the week before. But thats not your problem is it?

[ DELETED ]

Once again, congrats to Nicole. The Star ruined my post, but I raise the question again...

Why is it that a person who acts in an international film can get a datukship, but a national sports hero, who has won her weight in trophies and medals, has yet to receive the same recognition for her contribution to our nation's pride?

She should get a datukship.

JEFF OOI says: Ever wonder, when Nicol decided to go pro on squash, her main aim in life was to get a datukship? Is a datukship the pinnacle of a lifetime's achievement? This is so feudal in thinking!

jeff,
How many of our Ministers are running to the airport to greet her with big fat cheque? No Minister? Wrong winner. But Nicolthe country is proud and happy for you.

You know, not everything here is apolitical. A datukship is simply to recognise that she has contributed to our nation. Stop making everything a political issue.

And Frank&Honest, why focus on UMNO? Has Gerakan issued a congrats, since she is staying in Penang?

Stop making everything political, guys...

Maybe, put in on hold till she's more mature enough for the Datukship title or her later contribution to the sports and our country.

When you say mature, what is your insinuation? That she's too young?

What does age have to do with maturity? I can get common sense from more 18 year olds than a group of aged and senior politicians.

Age should not be a barrier to recognise someone's contribution to their country!

Forget the irrelevant Datukship and forget the UMNOputra adulations that may or may not come! It really isn't that important! In the eyes of the world, here stands a true 'Towering Malaysian' (with proven Indian and Chinese DNA). Kind of reminds me of Jesse Owens at the 1936 Berlin Olympics where he totally destroyed the Nazis' myth of the 'master race'!
It would of course be nice if her home state of Penang shows some gratitude for putting Penang on the international map by producing a giant in the field of sports.
Nicol, you stand tall amongst Malaysians and the people is truly truly proud of you.

Sincere congratulations. Pls keep your head and continue to work hard and aim for that next World title. Remember last year.

Congratulation Nicol!
We the 'rakyat' are proud of your achievement.
Truly the first "Towering Malaysian"
Two times a world champion!
Three times in the making.

JEFF OOI says: Ever wonder, when Nicol decided to go pro on squash, her main aim in life was to get a datukship? Is a datukship the pinnacle of a lifetime's achievement? This is so feudal in thinking!

It is not about her, it's about us. If a person who has contributed so much to a nation in any arena whatsoever, in this case, sports, is not given a title to recognise her contribution, just what exactly is our nation doing to show their gratitude?

She should be offered a datukship for actually going under the banner of our country. If she so chooses to refuse the title, then we'll let it be.

It's still her choice, but for no single monarch in the country to actually show that what she's doing is worth a simple title as "Dato'", now that, is feudal.

aput83

Gerakan? issuing congrats to Nicol?

Nobody cares about Gerakan. They are irrelevant.

Do you think THIS Govt will care about its proud citizens who achieved international acclaim if the name does not sound right? Look at what happened in the past? Do I need to say more?

All this talk by Pak Lah of having an inclusive society is all talk when one of our brightest sports stars, standing on top of the world in the world of squash, is given second or third class recognition treatment?

Forget about datukships for Nicol. In Malaysia, the number of datukships offered is almost like a dime a dozen. They say,if you throw a stone in Kuala Lumpur, there is high likelihodd it will land on someone with a datukship,if not, a datin.

Nicole, you make me feel proud and homesick enough to declare that to say that I am Malaysian. Once I found a banner proudly proclaiming Hail Our Queen Nicole David in Penang's Kapitan Keling Mosque ( unfortunate street name)

Oops typoed again!
Above post should read:
Nicole, you make me feel proud and homesick enough to declare that I am Malaysian.

Once I found a banner proudly proclaiming Hail Our Queen! Nicole David by the street near Penang's Kapitan Keling Mosque ( unfortunate street name). Her mum is Cina and dad a keling I believe.

Does this really matter? Of course not.

Frank&Honest

Hey, you brought up the political party congrats message. What do you mean it's irrelevant? Gerakan owns Penang. She lives in Penang. I consider that relevance.

So you would admit that the government is wrong, but not voice out your opposition, or even equal treatment to others? Nice, very nice.

And about your analogy, how many Dato's and Datins do you know from Penang, at the age of 23?

I would like to think her as the first diverse youth to be given a title, as an example that age, race nor religion should not be a barrier.

And at this point in time, I think it is exactly what Malaysia needs.

aput83,
Yawn! If you give me RM20 mils, I can find way to make you a latuk in Bolehland, any age above 18(sorry, cannot be younger, it is feudal requirement).

moo_t,

I don't remember any requirement stating that a person has to be 18 to receive a datukship...

Are you sure?

As for the $20 million, shouldn't be a problem....

Nicol won the title through sheer grit and will power. Passion and determination. And most of all... sacrifice.

All values lacking in so many other atheletes the govt spends money on.

Neither money nor some sports complex in London can buy these values.

Nicol, we are truly proud of you. We will always rememeber you....

The Malaysian Govt can stuff it's Datukship or any other ships down the South China Sea.

Nicol has the world under her feet. No need for petty recognition from a rather insignificant Nation.

She is a World Champion.

For me, I will not trade being a World Champion with a tunship or even to play with my marbles in space.

Nicol should not be compared together with Alex Yoong. In the international arena, Alex Yoong was a failure.

jigsawpuzzle,

i thank you for voicing out something that has been lingering in my head...hahaha!!

Hi Nicol,

In the midst of all the negative news about Malaysia, you, a kid at 23, made us all proud. You showed those 2-3 time older than you how to manage your life and make it count, instead of the so-called leaders who only know how to make fools of themselves. You raised my faith in the young people like you. I hope that you will use your position to encourage other young people, especially students, to be focussed and really go for their goals. I hope that you stay world champions for many more years to come. Be like Michael Schumacher of Squash.

You have a great future and please do remain consistent. This MALAYSIAN boleh!!

In the light of the UMNO General Assembly, Malaysia does not deserve one like Nicole. Malaysia is too bodoh for one who operates at her class. UMNO and all of its leaders should be shamefaced to even mention Nicol's name in passing after everything they said about the two races she represents. I wonder which shameless UMNO leader would even extend his hand to shake her's.

aput83

A datukship for Nicole as World Champion????

What's a datuk worth?

Everybody knows what it COSTS.

Almost every Ahmad who happened to be a Ketua Pengarah or Setia Usaha, every Muthu who is a member of MIC with close ties to UMNO and every Ah Chong with swats of money in his pocket, almost always get a datukship.

And here we want to put a World Champion in the same league as these Ahmads, Muthus and Ah Chong whose contribution to society, to the human race, and to their profession or undertakings, at best, questionable.

Fighting for a recognition in a land where nobody else in the world cares two hoots what a datuk means or stands for.

Give Nicole a piece of prime real estate land, that might mean something or get Petronoas to offer Nicole 2-10 million ringgit, instead of Petronos offering closed tenders to undeserving UMNOputras to do a half-baked job on some construction work, which in most cases would have been subcontracted to another UMNOputra contractor or MCA subcontractor.

Fighting for a datukship for a World Champion?? That's an insult to the many hours of hardwork, skills and many tons of sweat in training by Nicole to be a world champion.

Come on, get your priorities right, folks.

Nicole, you are a genius!

In the women's game, she's 4th in the all-time great list. She's now at 2-2 (World Open 2 titles, British Open 2 titles). Sarah Fitzgerald leads the pack with 5-2, followed by Susan Devoy at 4-7, then Michelle Martin 3-6. As Liz Irving said squash players only peak at 28 to 32 yrs of age, so God willing, Nicol can be the greatest women's squash player who ever lived. Go Nicol go!!!

We all love you Nicol Ann.
One of the towering Bangsa Malaysia !!
Pls take note Ghani !!
Bring us Olympic gold.

Frank&Honest

Ironically, my first name is Ahmad, and no, I don't wish to be a Ketua Pengarah nor a Setiausaha.

Even if no one in the world gives two hoots about it, our locals still view it as an honorable title even if almost everyone here thinks that it's all about the money.

And once more, you keep bringing up a political side to this argument. Why is that? This has nothing to do with politics!

Of course unless you have subzero IQ and behave like a bunch of bare assed macquaques like them, UMNO wont mention you or give you any recognition of whatever contribution to Malaysia.

I've always had high regards for this Malaysian.

She does not need a Datukship. She's too good for that.

With or without it, she's earned a great deal of respect from almost every Malaysian - something very few politicians have succeeded doing.

For the rest of us Average Joes, the least we could do is recognise our homegrown talent's achievements by not misspelling her name.

It's Nicol David. Sans the letter E.

aput83

You asked...And once more, you keep bringing up a political side to this argument. Why is that?

You have a problem with that? What's your problem? You want a datukship or a closed tender?

Nicol

Sorry for mispelling your name if you are reading this.

Kind of mixing with names like Nicole Kidman

you continue to excel, Nicol. god bless you.

our lying ass politicians are so damn thick-skinned to admit that their 400 mill sports complex is another scheme to rob Malaysia. '92 Thomas Cup team, Nurul Huda, our old football teams, little Ryan the sailor, our top taekwando exponents..none of em needed that bloody sports complex. that was then, they say. well look at Nicol now then...

so what's their justification? shameless, i tell you. i remeber writing to an UMNO politician once saying that sports can bring the nation together. that lying clown told me that join MIC. wtf?!!!

look no further than the fighter Kok Keong and old Sidek boys. we were 100% behind em. Today? because the country has neglected Nicol so much, only a select few of us follow her progress. stinking politicians destroying unity. bangsa Malaysia is bollocks and Pak Lah knows it.

Other countries have national meets for EACH sport to pick the best. in malaysia, we got Sukma and shit like that. fat officials walking around scratching their nuts while we watch mediocre sports on TV. sports minister is a bloody joke.

man... here we've got one of the best in the WORLD and the country ignores her? we're not talking jaguh kampung footballers or pathetic track & field clowns here mates. if what all of you have said about peaking in the game is true... then damn right, we could be looking at one of the greatest ever.

sorry i strayed and started whigin about our sports. malaysian sports really gives me the s***s. i hate it when i've got no home grown atheletes to brag about. chin aun, mokhtar and aru are all names of the past now. i got nothing to crow about... well, apart from one of the best damn women squash players ever!!!

bryant

Yes you are absolutelyright. Those damn politicians are the cause for the mediocrity we have in our SPORTS, EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS and UNIVERSIITIES, SCHOLARSHIPS, BRAIN DRAIN and the DETERIORATIO OF THE CIVIL SERVICE.

Our UMNO Govt takes pride in third-grade champions, mediocre performances and they somehow feel intimidated or threatened by merit-based performance, world-class recognition (look at the Terence Gomez case!!).

Somehow the fiction of UMNO's feudalistic and outdated ideology of "ketuanan Melayu" has alot to do with all this fracas and fiasco we are observing and talking about.

Why can't UMNO talk about "Ketuanan Malaysia" and allow the UMNO YOuth Leader to wield his keri, let his mouth froth as much as he likes to call for Ketuanan Malaysia.

If BN politicians have this subtle discrimination to shower favours by race and community even for SPORTS, the only discipline that can truly unite this nation, then Barisan National has alot to answer, and Pak Lah's call for an INCLUSIVE MALAYSIAN SOCIETY is just rhetoric and a joke.

And you know what, yet I get some silly questions from at least one person p on this blog askingwhy I harped and bring in on politics on Nicol's case. It goes to show some people even on this blog need to come out of their tempurung and see the big picture.

In Malaysia, everything revolves around the politics of UMNO, even SPORTS. And the politics is negative, discriminative and blatantly bias to justify UMNO's "Ketuanan Melayu" outdated ideology

Fank & Honest is right. Politics is everything in Malaysia, including in sports. How many politicians sit as Presidents of the various State and National Sporting Associations? Way too many. It is totally sickening to go to these meetings and instead of getting down to business, it is seen to be more important to take care of 'Datuk President'. This is one reason I stopped my involvement with one particular association. Expensive jackets for the Organising Committees of Meets and special provisions for the Datuk were seen were seen as a FAR higher priority than the welfare and development of the participants. Sport will remain unnamed, but a report to the Sports Commissioner was also thrown out. Shocking.

Bryant, Frank&Honest, LLtwigs; You folks have said all that I wanted to say about how everything in this country's being drowned by politics... It's been this way for too long. We look forward to start changing it soon....at the next GE.

Nicol, congrats again. Just keep doing what you're doing, and stay above all this. And have fun.

Frank&Honest

No, I am not looking for a bloody closed tender, or any profit making from all this ruckus about giving Nicol a datukship.

It is more than a political statement.

First, as you said, we have no examples of meritocracy. Well, giving her a datukship is proof that the nation recognises her contribution, thus proving that meritocracy is not dead in Malaysia.

Second, she's 23. To give her a datukship proves that age is not a boundary for a person to be recognised for their contributions.

Third, she's from a diverse family, thus showing that race and religion is also not a factor.

But then, you, as always bring up the issue of UMNO, as if it was the only party in the coalition with a problem. It is widespread. It is the entire coalition. I don't see anyone bitching about Kayveas and the PPP.

And when I mention another party involved, you go and say it's irrelevant. And yet we all know that a vote for Barisan is a vote for UMNO, so how is it the other parties become irrelevant.

And if I am stuck in a tempurung, then I guess you must have a whole universe's point of view, don't you?

You see everything as politics, but I don't. I wish others would look past politics, especially in the issue of national contributions in whatever arena.

P. Ramlee was not granted a "Tan Sri" for being Malay, but for his contribution to the film industry. Michelle Yeoh.....I have no idea what she got the datukship for.

The offering of a datukship should not be seen as merely a political move.

congrates nicole
too bad the government controled media is not so effective in delivering good news?

i think it was a long long time ago when we hear proud national news that make the rakyat cheer and clap hands (successful national policies, realistic achievement etc.)
nowadays the headlines are dominated by ugly news.

hmmm...

is nicol still single?

I might want to ask her out for dinner... and supper too ^_^

Michelle Yeoh got Datukship because of her huge involvement in the HongKong film industry (you have no idea how many Malaysian watch her, don't you?)and also because she is the first Malaysian in a Hollywood movie(s).

Nicol does not need a recognition know. She is still on top of her game and playing full-heartily. Give her datukship as recognition on the day when she retires, not now. People do not hunger recognition as much as you think.

aput83

You asked...And yet we all know that a vote for Barisan is a vote for UMNO, so how is it the other parties become irrelevant.

You just answered YOUR own question. You DO know the meaning of "irrelevant" , don't you? You want it translated into Bahasa?

Frank&Honest

kahkahkah...I must have been bloody brainwashed by past comments

But then, you, as always bring up the issue of UMNO, as if it was the only party in the coalition with a problem. It is widespread. It is the entire coalition. I don't see anyone bitching about Kayveas and the PPP.

And when I mention another party involved, you go and say it's irrelevant. And yet we all know that a vote for Barisan is a vote for UMNO, so how is it the other parties become irrelevant.

Here I wish to point out that UMNO is not the only member of the government, and should not be seen as the only guilty member, which you obviously portray.

to win the first time is brilliant, but to defend it again is short of breathtaking.

congrats nicol

for those spewing hate for anything malaysian, look at the picture and see nicol's supporters at belfast.

aput83

The topic is Nicol's fantastic success as World Champion.

Don't distract the current conversation with another topic which I will take you on when Jeff posts on another suitable topic to debate with you.

Let us have the spotlight shine brightly on Nicol for once, instead of you trying to be an apologist for UMNO and their castrated cohorts in Govt.

Frank&Honest,

I am not an apologist for UMNO.

However, I concur and see no point in us continuing this argument this far.

Till the next topic then.

The Only thing that I can be proud of being a Malaysian is having Nicol as a fellow Malaysian.

She's a TRUE MALAYSIAN CHAMPION.

Unlike our AMOK prone and WAYANG KULIT leaders.

Well done, Nicol. You are no jaguh kampung and a true international Champion. You are No.1 in the world and and very few in the world can share this privilege.

You did it without any shortcuts but through blood and sweat. If you can do it, the rest of us Malaysians can do it too in the international arena, that is if we work hard enough and adopt your attitude. You are a model that youth in Malaysia should look up to.

Well done TOO to the management of Squash Rackets Association of Malaysia(SRAM). Hope other sport associations can learn from your successful program and structure in developing world class competitive players .

congrats to Nicol. Michelle Yeoh got her Datoship based on merits but I cant say much abt Jean Todt though. Maybe he bought one of those bungalows in some Pulau2 and made someone filthy rich.

But I can say for sure the Astronut will get a Datoship when he comes home from his stint. It doesnt matter if he spilled his teh tarik or dropped the Seremban Char Siew Pau, he will still be a hero.

And how much are they gonna give Nicol for her effort under the scheme? Rm20000 for a World Title? And then we are giving out RM80000 for an ASian Games Gold medal? Weird but strange.

INTERNET does not operate in a legal vacuum.
