Jeff,

Don't jump to the conclusion that the site was hacked for political reasons. Many times, the site is hacked just because it is insecure. Googling for m3rhametsizler gives you a large list of sites that have been hacked by this guy. My take is it's probably just a script that tests for vulnerabilities and exploits them if found.
